On 21 January 1951, an arson attempt too.h place at the offices of the
Singapore Standard and the Sin Chew Jit Poh. A group of six to eight
(. A~T"azzeso, one armea with a revnYver, Te E r s suspected to be in
possession of hand grenades and daggers, tied up a Special Constable
who was on guard, arid spread gasoline in the premises. The men were
discovered before the ]"ire caught, but they escaped in a car which was
parl.ed on Robinson Road. A. watchman and a compositor at the plant
extinguished the afire.,
2_, On 27 January 1951, two Chinese youths riding um-sabered bicycles
held up a -roman police corporal who was dressed in plain clothes. One
of the Chinese seized and opened the policewoman's handbag, but she
.fought and recovered it, he youths apparently wore satisfied that the
handbag contained no weapons : ud rude off. Persons who wore at Lorong
214A at the junction of Geylang Road during the holdup made no attempt to
assist the woman, who carried arras until four months ago.
3:, During the period under rovi_ew, 21 identity card robberies, directed
mainly against hairdressing salons, drecs shops, and photography
s tuc.Lios yielded a total of 119 identity cards. Three Redi_ffusion
nets were smashed.

publication in Chinese, International !L-vs, as received by Police on
January 1951. A second cc py o "In e ` ional ITewc, dated 26 December

issues are different, and it is believed possible that two separate
organizations are publishing; the organ as a security precaution for
the ~?CP. Other propaganda material discovered in the period under
review included eirht Communist posters, found in the Uackonzie Road
area near the Singapore Traction Corp pany depot.
On 26 January 1951, Police- raided an i'CP Communications Center at 167
Queen Street, and arrested five persons. Evidence was found connecting
this propaganda center with one formerly located on Victoria Street s
Co nwiist propaganda, two vegetable :e ife daggers, a tin of gasoline
and diary notes proving that me_:nbers of the propaganda ring were

the public not only is uncooperative with police,, but is reluctant to
