Orig Pub Viata med., 1956, 3, No 5, 82-94 Abstract Phospholipid synthesis in the liver, facilitating the dis- solution of fats and their utilization in the tissues, prevents excessive accumulation of fats in the liver. Chemical compounds facilitating the formation of choline for the phosphatid synthesis act as lipotropic factors: caine, betaine, methionine, inosite, phytol, Vitamin B12 A detailed description of these substances is given. The most important lipotropic substances appear to be cho- lesterine and cystine. Authors emphasize the significance of the absence of lipotropic and excess of antilipotropic substances in food. Bucharest, Microbiologia, Parazitologia, Bpidemiologia, Vol 11, No 6, Nov-Dec 667-Pp 523-525. Abstract In a controlled study, the authors found that sera from 3 to 10-year old children without a history of typhoid or vaccination did not protect chicken embryos agpinst infection with Salmonella typhi 2. All sera from adults after vaccination did have a protective titer; in those persons where a degree of protection was evident , the vaccination resulted in a marked increase in the protective titer. The protective titer of all immunized persons was considerably smaller than that of immunized animals, presumably because of the difference in adr,,jinistration route and quantity of antigen. Presentation of personal observations concerning those erratic venous thromboses of the limbs which are the clinical signs preceding the latent carcinomatous local- Izations of certain viscera. In all of the cases reported the primary carcin6ma was concealed by more obvious manifestations such as thrombophlebitis, digestive haernorrhages and particularly a septicaemic status. The time inter-Val between the appearance of the thrombophlebitic process and the discovery of the latent visceral carcinoma varied from one week to one yr. It would appear that the in- cidence of the phlebitic process with muciparous neoplasias was found to be much higher than in the other varieties of malignant turnours. In all of the cases the coagulation tests were shown to be normal.even in the full period of digestive haemorrhages and thromboses. Both superficial and deepvenous thrombi are con- atituted by agglutinations of erythrocyte clumps. with no tendency towards an organization process. with no inflammatory aspect and no neoplastic cellular structure. Any patient who showed 2 or several manifestations of thrombo- phlebitis, whatever the location. intensity and duration. should be suspect, and -ill the more if he in past middle age. Their Application in Experimental Physiology and Therapy. Orig Pub : Sucrarile Sesiunii stiint. sec. stiinte med. Acad. R. P. R., 1954, Bucuresti, 1955, 9-48 Abstract : The premise that soporifics affect only the higher nervous centers is con- tradictory to the premise that all these preparations as a rule act equally on all sections of the neuron. Danielopolu thinks that 2 types of action by the drugs and physical agents should be distinguished: "the interstimularing antagonistic mechanism" and "the corticoendocrine affector mechanism." In order to clarify the mechanism of the action of soporifics the authors investigated the actions of chloral, chloralose, paraldehyde, and luminal. Their influenice on-the action of the mediators-acetylcholine (1) and histamine (II), and also of the ions of potassiwa on the uterus of a virgin ktjnea1P1&; on the terminal section of the iliac of'the same animal; on the straight muscle of frog's abdomen; on the stimulation of the excretion of adrenalin (III) in a dog induced by M of 1; on the effect of 111 on the blood pressure of animal; and on the increase in the secretion of 111 induced by the irritation of the splanchnik was in- vestigated. The authors found that like the action of other drugs the action of Card, 1/2 Rumania/Phaxmiacology. Toxicology. Narcotic Drugs U-1 Abs Jour : Ref Zhur-Biol., No 7, 1958, 32787 soporifics, may be nonspecific and specific. A nonspecific effect is known.as one which affects the processes which are the results of the modifications in the aciion of media- tors caused by a given substance. 1 has shovin that luminal has a specific and a non- specific effect on the working organ, with the first predominant when large doses, and the second predominant wtum small doses are administered. The nonspecific action is exhibited in aweakened reaction of the organs to 1,, while the effect of 31 and potas- sium, ions does not change. The specific effect of large doses is indicated by a primary paralysis of the cells in which they are insensitive to 1, 11, potassium ions, and even to barium chloride. Chloral,, paraldehyde, and chloralose while nonspecific in action intensify the effect on 1 on the musculature. Their specific action causes contractions, which is succeded by a second paralysis caused by exhaustion. In experiments on a dog luminal inhibited the action of 1 (produced a frenatoral action); the greater the dose the greater its inhibition. It was impossible to differentiate between this action and its specific paralyzing action. Small doses of chloral, paraldehyde, and chloralose as a result of their nonspecific action intensify the effect of 1 on the nervous system; large doses depress it (specific frenatoral effect). In some sr-tall animals chloralose may induce spasms. Inminal interferes vrith the increase in the secretion of '111 by the Inyeloid substance of the suprernals induced by 1 and potassium ions* Chloral, paraldehyde, and chloralose have no effect on the secretion of 111.
