In NIITavtoprom the'cyanate was obtained from the two salts:
urea (55%) and potash (45%) in accordance with the following
reaction

The urea and the potash are introduced in small quantities into
an iron crucible heAted to 350-3800C. During the fusion process
salammaniac and carbon -dioxide are generated and a 98% potassium
cy,anate.is obtained.-"W'h-en the crucible in three-quarters full
the temperature is increased to 5000C and sodium aulphide is added.
The-both.is ready f6r operation when the sulphide sulphur in the
melt reaches 0.2-2%.- The content of potassium cyanate in the
melt should not be below 30%. The effect of this process was
tried out.pn piston kings in repaired truck engines. It was
found that by means of this treatment the service life of the

piston rings increased from the standard 10-12000 km to

heated,to temperatures exceeding their tempering temperature, a

of 90% KCNS + 10% NH CNS The sulphiding process is/in a
gaseous medium formea by*the decomposition of antmonium thiocyanate
salts. As a result, the melt retains its fluidity and no ballasts
form. This process is suitable, for instance, for worm gears and
other case-hardened components.

TITLE: On the Experience Made by the Automation and Machimization of
Industrial Processes at the Moscow Petroleum-working Factory

ABSTRACT: In the introduction the percentf4?e according to which the
personnel is distributed in a petroleum-working plaat is givon.
According to these data 30 % of -the workers operate technological
apparatus, 20 % work the containorsq pipelineaq pumps and similar
installations, 7 % supervise power economy, 10 % carry out
laboratory controls, 5 4, operate control- anti meaeuxing instruments,
14 % carry out repaira, and 14 % are available for various Izinds
of work. It was found that the dogree of automation of various
processes varies, and that, above all, transport-operations anzi
laboratory controls must be automatized. It is stated that the
collective of the Moskovskiy neftepererabatyvayushchiv. zavod
(Moscow Petroleum-working Factory) has improved all technical-
economic indices2 and these improvements are given for the years
1952-1956. This progress was attained by the introduction of new
technical methods. As the automation of individual units doee not

general automation be introduceil. This work is being carried out
in the same plants on the basis of data published by the former
Ministerstvo neftyanoy promyshlognnosty (Ministry of the Petroleum
Industry) and the Ministerstvo :priborostroyeniya (Ministry of
Instrument Building). The most Important work Js at present the
building of a central bnvitchbo&rd for the control, regulation, and
signalization of technological apparatus) operations etc. Of
210 automatic regulators, 75 % "lore insULIled on the switchboard,
so that 46 % of the personnel is free for other work. Furthormore,
the individual branches of the :plant and their automation are
discussed and two control schemss are sho-ini (Figs 1, 2). It was
decided that the factory be rab%iilt by the collaboration of
Giprogaztopprom (State Instituto for the Design ani Pla3miing of
Synthetic Liquid Fuel and Gas Establishments) with the

Nauchno-iseledovatellskiy institut NIITeploprib= (Scientific

A number of qualitative analyzers was worked out in the design
office SKB ANN. Pneumatically driven cranes, which were developed
by the proyektnyy institut MNPZ (Plann-4ng Institute, of the
MNPZ), did aot work satisfactorily and nad to be reconstructed.
The experimental department of the Yockovskiy nefte,.,,avod (Moscow
Petroleum Factory) had to work it months in order to repair the
design faults of the device PVVN-57,j which is destined
for determining the flash point., There are 3 figures.
