TEXT3 In a cryoscopic study of the-system CdBr 2 KI - H20 it was found
that the compound CdBr 2. 2KI formed in the solution. The complex compound
of the composition K 2 [CdBr 2~121 *2H2P was obtained by a preparative method,
and its solubility, density, and electrical conductivity were studied.

TITLE- On Thermocyclic Ageing of Duralumin

TEXT: It is known that in a number of alloys creep under
cyclic temperature fluctuations is different from that under
isothermal conditions. I.A. Oding arrived at the tonclusion
that the observed reduction in creep due to cyclac temperature
fluctuations is associated with the formation of alternating
temperature stresses and with activation of the process of
ageing. V.S. Yermakov (Ref. 2) has studied the influence of
cyclic heat-treatment on the dispersion decomposition of the
alloy )IA-J43-1 (EI-437). He found that cyclic heat-treatment
accelerates the thermocyclic ageing of the alloy. To some
extent the effect of cyclic heat-treatment is analogous to
the effect of an external alternating load and to the effect
of ultrasonics (Ref. 3). The effect of thermocyclic ageing
was also observed by the authors of this paper in lead (Ref.4).

Apparently, thermocyclic ageing is due to the effect of
temperature stresses and strains caused by it and has a
number of common characteristics with strain ageing. In
this paper the influence of cyclic heat-treatment on the
early stage of the process of ageing of duralumin Q,- I (D-1)
is investigated. Wire specimens of 1 and 2 mm dia. were
investigated; the microhardness was measured on 2 mm dia.
specimens on which a facet about I mm wide was ground along
the axis of the specimen. This facet was chemically
polished in a mixture of nitric and phosphorio~. 4--Lus with
water and glycerin. To prevent blackening of the ground
zurface as a result of quenching, the quenching was effected
in acetone. The electric resistance was measured on the
I mm specimens; most of the 1 mm dia. specimens were quenched
in water . The quenching was after a 2-hour soaking at
505-510 C. The cyclic heat-treatment was effected from
-j.96 liquid nitrogen) to 4-20 0C (water) and from -196 to
+150 C (paraffin). Heating and tooling were effected by

simple submersion. The soaking time in the heating and
cooling media was selected in such a way that the entire
volume of the specimen should have time to assume the
temperature of the medium. The duration of the cycle was
30-35 sec. For comparison the change in the properties of
identical0specimens subjected to isothermal holding at +20
and +150 C was also determined. Each experiment was
repeated on 3-5 SPecimellsi the property-treatmeni tLme curves
were measured twice and good agreement was found to exist.
The microhardness was measured with a (PMT-3) instrument
with a 200 g load. The variance lid not exceed 5% of the
measured value. The electric resistance was measured bX means
of a bridge. The results of the treatment -196 to +20 C and
vice versa are given in Fig. 1: the properties are plotted
as a function of the holding time. In2Fig. 1 the changes are
plotted of the microhardness (a, kg/mm ) and of the specific

Curves I and 5 represent thermocyclic ageing after quenching
in acetonei Curve 2 - isothermal ageing after quenching in
acetone-, Curve 3 thermocyclic ageing after quenching in water;
Curve 4 isothermal ageing after quenching in water. The dat4
for the thermocyclic ageing were plotted taking into considerations
the full duration of the cycle. Comparison of the thermocyclic
and isothermal ageing indicates that the former accelerates the
process of dispersion hardening, which is particularly pronounced
during the first cycles. The hardness curve shows a pronounced
maximum with a subsequent drop and passing through a minimum
it shows a further slowing down of the hardness increasa4
the maximum microhardness is lower than that obtained in
-isothermal ageing of identical Bpecimens. The electric
resistance changes in a similar manner to the microhardness.
Whilst in water--quenched specimens pronounced maxima and
minima of the electric resistance was observed,on acetone-
quen,ched ones these were not very pronounced. In Fig. 2, the

results are given of comparative measurements on cyclically
heat-treated (1300 cycles) and naturally-aged specimens with
the same hardness. The change was investigated in the
hardness of both batches during holding at #150 OC.
The change in the microhardness was qualitatively the same
in both cases, but the specimens which were thermocyclically
aged had a higher thermal stability at 150 OC. In Fig, 2
Curve 1 relates to thermocyclically-aged speciffens, Curve 2
to tsothermally-aged specimens (hardnesskg/mm versus
duration, minL In the ease of cyclic heat-treatment of
-196 V- +150 C activation of the age-Ing process was observed
only during the first cycles of the heat-treatmeRt. Fig. 3
shows the changes in the microhardness (a, kg/mm ) and in the
electric resistance (b, ~LP,.cm) as a function of the treatment
time, min, and, respectively, the number of cycles for thermo-
cyclically (-196 150 0C) and isothermally (+150 OC) aged
specimens. The Curves I and 3 relate to thermocyclic ageing,

ABSTRACT: In the sunflower (Helianthus annuus) occurrence of female
plants with male sterility is extremely rare in these her-
maphroditic plants. There is only one instance quoted in
literature previously.Professoi, A.I. Kuptsov quoted one
instance in La29 where a specimen of India was found. Since
then, 21 male sterile, so-called female sunflower plants were
noticed in 1951 and 1952 in the Kubanskaya opytnaya stantsiya
Vsesoyuzriogo instituta raBteniyevodstva (Kuban Experimental
Station of the All-Union Institute of Plant Cultivation)
among the descendants of the graftings of genetically re-
mote forms of this culture. The occurrence of female plants
is tentatively explained as the result of a sudden change
of metabolism of the graft of the olive suat'lower under the
influence of the genetically and biologically remote wildings.

Abstract In rabbits, whith received total radiation of 500 r,
the flexor reflexes of the rear extremity vere slig,,-
tly changed in response to stimulation of the shin
with single shocks of induction current, but as soon
as 30 minutes after radiation with a dosage of 800
1000 r there was a sharp lowerinG of the arTlitude
and frequency of the action current (AC) and a pro-
longation of the reflex period. The phenomena were

reflex time chanped little, but after 1000 r in1iibi-
tion of reflex activity was much more profound but
still not as high as with radiation of SC. Conse-
quently, shifts in unconditioned reflex activity
after total irradiation depended on changes in the
SC and receptor apparati, and with fewer doses of
radiation the irradiated surface exerted a predomLna-

v.,ore crrrled out on 18 rabbits decerebrated by the Sharrington-

irradiation and in c) rabbits after X-irradjAtion with 800-10OOr
at a dose rate of 26.9-29.31-/'min. The myotactic reflex of
m.fernoralis was weakened in decerebrated and Irradiated animals.

ABSTRACT: An analysis is made of a one-transistor forming amplifier in the collector
of which a pulse transformer is connected, and whose emitter contains an RC feedback
network. The operation of the system is described and a quantitative analysis of the
circuit is presented. Differential equations describing the circuit during formation
of d-e top of the pulse are developed, and results of their solution on the MEDA-II-type
analog computer are given. The effect is described of the primary inductance of the
transformer and of the RC feedback network on the current in the base. The current
falls to considerable. negative values, with the result that the width of the output
pulse is stabilized. The results measured on a real network are compared with those

Abstract In his work 'Vurbulent Friction and Beat Exchange of a Wedge in a Gaseous
Stream" (coauthor: M. F. Shirokov, ibid., Oct 1953), employing the ex-
ponential laws governin the.--distribution of velocities and tenper-atures
~n-tiLe-.boundary-layer, the author established the general methods for
calculating the friction and heat exchange of a wedge for an arbitrary
distribution of temperature over its surface. In! the present work he
presents the results of calculations of the coefficient of friction for
a plate and wedge where the temperature of their surface maintains over
the entire extent a constant magnitude and where the index n of the power
law governing the velocity distribution is taken to equal 1/7. He con-
cludes that the greatest influence upon the friction of the wedfiv, is ex-
erted by the value. of the Reynolds number and by the heating of the sur-

ABSTRACTz The author investigates the heat propagation in porous plates and
tubes, where temperature and pressure at both sides of the areas
of contact are constant and in the pores there is no vaporization.
As patterns the author considers two domains I and II, adjoining
immediately one to another. I consists only of the fixed skeleton
of tho body, II forms a connected flow of the fluid. Because of
different thermal properties and because of the flow of the fluid
in the direction of higher temperatures there appears a heat
interchange, corresponding in the mean to the heat propagation
in the plate and in the tube.
There are 2 figures, and 4 Soviet references.

ABSTRACT: The author considers the flow around a plate by a turbulent
gas flow with simultaneous diffusion of the products of a
heterogeneous reaction which takes place on the surface of
the plate. The assumption that the turbulent boundary layer
possesses the usual structure allows near the surface of the
plate to understand a certain region of flow as a lover
stratum (as for an incompressible fluid). Under numerous
suppositions the author obtains an approximative solution.
There are 1 table, and 2 references, 1 of which is Soviet,
and 1 German.

homogeneous sphere sector. In the first one the heating takes place

In the second problem one considers a stationary temperature gradient,

at the spheric surfaced Both problems are solved by the Fourier method.

TRANSLATIONs The equation of a compressed laminar boundary layer in the neighbor-

equation of motion of a binary reactive mixture gases with the use of a series of
simplifications (concerning values of the product of the density by the viscosity
and the parameter, associated with heat of reaction) reduces to the system of
