Gurevil. G. B. The algebra f trivecturs, 11. TrijilY
Sem. Vektoe Tenzor. Analizu 6, 28-12-1 (1948). (Rus-
sian)
This paper [of which part I appeared in Trudy Sem.
Vektor. Tenzor. Analizu 2-3, SI-118 (1935)-', is a sv--
ternatic study of the invariants a-nd classification of-tri-
vectors, together with the labyrinth of algebraic construc-
tions necessary for their derivation. The atithor's main
contributions-have been to give invariants characterizing
the possible types of trivectors of rank 7 [the forms them-
selves were given by Schouten, Rend. Circ. Mrt. Palermo
~5. 137-156 (1931)] and the 13 typcs and characteristL
invariants for-rank 8 [C. R. (Doklady) Acad. Sci. URSS Y,,
353-356 (1935)1 in the field of complex numbers. The~%t
present paper supplies proofs not originally given and cofl_!~i
siderably simplifies cumbersome proofs in the earlier work
of himself and others. A wealth of properties of trivectors
and associated invariants and cornitants. is gNen. A start is
also here made in the study of analogous problems for syni-
metric trivalent-tensors, establishing inequaliti,_-s betwcen
the analog6us invariants. L. C. Hutchinson.

Periodical : Mat. sbor., Vol- 35 (77), pp 439-460, Nov-Dec 1954
Abstract : The author studies the principal properties of a special class of linear
Lie algebras, called standard Lie algebras, whose determination is based
upon concepts of the Lie nul algebra, complete nul algebra and main alge-
bra (first introduced by the author in 1949-1950). Four references; e.g.

The definition of curves in a Euclidean plane n is given and
the terminology used is established. The E set of curves under
investigation satisfies the following condition: through any
two points in a plane only pne curve from E can be drawn; or,
two different curves from E intersect at no more than one point.
It is proven that any system.of curves which satisfies the above
condition is an infinite or central system.

Abstract : Resume of a report read by the author at a joint seminar of the Divi-
sion of Physics of the Earth and the Division of Geodynamics, Geo-
physics Institute, Acad Sci USSR. Treats methods for the application
to geology of the Jacobi principles of mechanics, found in the liter-
ature of American tectonists over the past 60 years and having obtained
wide-spread currency in other countries, including the USSR. Showr,
that the noncritical following of these "methods" in Soviet geological
literature has led to deep-rooted absurdities of no theoretical or
practical use. 21 references-16 Soviet.

ABSTRACT: An extensive critical re~,,iew of the methods of the applica-
tion, in geological literatitre, of physical and mechanical
information used as the basis of "mechanical analysis" of the
deformation of the earth's crust. The survey comprises 8
chapters: 1. Typical Samples of the Presentation of "Funda-
mentals of Mechanics" in Geological Literature. 2. The
"Ellipsoid of Deformation" by "G. Bekker". 3. Utilization of
Experimental Data in Geology and the "Bukher" "Theory".
4. "Mechanical Analysis" and Real Fundamentals of Tecton-
ics. 5. Deformation of Earth's Crust and Deformation of a

SOV/IZ4-58-3-3297
On the "Mechanical Analysis of Problems of Tectonics" (cont. )
7. Textbooks of Recent Years. 8. On the So-called "Stress Hypothesis".
Convincingly albeit too protractedly it is shown that gross distortions of
the fundamental concepts of mechanics and errors committed in books on
structural geology render the respective chapters worthless and unapplicable.
Some considerations are presented concerning ways of utilizing the mechanics
of a deformed body in the problems of tectonics.

Abstract: The equations of propagation of waves in a Don'deal elast.c medium
are obtained in most cases by introductag into the generalized
Hooke's law additional "elastic stresses" proportional to the

For example at dF-12 =const = V it. follows frcv (11 that for the

the stress occurs in the undeformed volume element. 'Equations of
type (1) are su4table only for the description off attenuation such
as is caused by the resistance of the surrounding medium, but does
not follow from the defCrmation mec'banism itself. In a real body,
the stresses are smaller (owing to their relaxation) than in an
ideally vaustic medium. This is taken into account by the equations
of B. DeryagiD (Zh. geofizi-kil, 1931, 1, 207; 1932, 2, 337), in which
the 2 cemponents of stress are connected by a minus sign, which is
equivalent to representing the strain in the form of a sum (and not
a difference) of its elastic and inelastic c~-pponents. The author
starts from the same concept, indicating that in the most general
case it is characterized by the kncvn Maxwell relaxation equation,
which can be supplPmented by an analysis of na-, c-nly the elastic
(Hooke) and residual deforuiation. but also by t,h!g deformation of
the elastic aftereffect. Acccrd~m~; to preceding works by the author
