ABSTRACT: An experimental model of a neon-filled mechanotron (see Fig.11 built by
remodeling a Soviet-made VP-2 vacuum switch is described. Fixed electrodes 2 are
sealed in glass envelope 11 moving electrode 3 is fastened to diaphragm 5 ich is
glass-sealed at 4- Mechanical input (displacement, speed, or acceleration) is
applied to rod 6. The rod displacement is measured as a bridge-circuit unbalance
voltage (see Fig. 2) by a center-zero voltmeter calibrated in microns (0-2and 0-20).
The mechanotron sensitivity is claimed to be 1-4 v1r at 600 v applied voltagel
internal reoistance of each half of the mechanotron is 200 kohms. The calibration
method and connection diagrams of the sensor and its d-c amplifier are given.

iABSTRACT: This Author Certificate presents a method for Geophysical investigation of
drill holes. The method is based on measuring the oxidizing-roducing potentials of
rocks. To detormino accurately the geological section of the drill hole, the walls
a' the hole are treated with a chemical reagent, such as hydrochloric acid, which
intensifies the natural oxidizing-reducing potentials by changing the insoluble min-
oral form-- of elements with variable valences into a soluble state. After a certain
ti,me, suffficient, for dissolving the rocks, the artificially intensified oxidizing-
reducing potentials are measured by the method of recording the potentials of the
internal polarization.

worked out with sufficient accuracy. However, this effect has not been taken into accouLt
in practical calculations, due to its low value. At present, due to the greater accuracy
of astronomical observations, this error has become more Important. The paper in-
cludes tables convenient for practical use, which were compiled on the basis of known
formulas. Even though the computed figures are at the limit of accuracy for the
astronomical determination of time, they will certainly be used in the future for highly

rate of olefins is lower than their reaction rate with chloro silane's~,.
The radiation chemical yield (G) and the quantitative yield in reaction
products depend on the molar quantitative ratio of 'the initial subs-klances
(ontimum: 1 olefin molecule' per III atom of chloro silane). The change of
reaction temDerature does not affect the radiation chemical yield of
perfluoro (alkyl-dialkyl) chloro silanes (G = 80 - 100 molecules 100 ev)
and of aryl chloro silanes (G - 6 - 10 molecules/100 ev). ',',ith ~alkyl-
-dialkyl) chloro silanes, G increases from 8-10 molecules/1100 ev at 200C

ABSTRACT: The author investigates the behavior of a curved elastic rod inside
an undeformed flexible shell, the rod being actedupon by a torque mo-
ment applied to one of its ends. The rod is contained within the shelf
without any gap or space between them. The rod's axial-line curva--
ture is considered to be constant along the rod's ent'.re length. and its
cross-sectional diameter is small as compared with the radius of cur-
vature of its axis. In the examination made of the motion of the rod
neither the friction forces nor the inertia forces are taken into account.
Expressions are evolved for the shear strains and tensile (or compres--
sive) strains; a determination is made of the normal and tangential
stresses and of the internal stresses at any cross section of the rod.

caused by fitting an already curved rod into a curved she[[ having a radius of curva--
ture [Transt. Ed. Note: "banana"] different from that of the rod. The author evolves
for the problem a differential equation, which she integrates in terms of elliptic
functions, She establishes a nonlinear relationship between the respective angles of
rotation of the two ends of the rod and thus, also, between the respective angillar
velocities thereof. Relationships are given wherein the variation of the rotational
reaction of the rod is shown to be a function of the angle of rotation of the end sec-
tion. It is noted that any initial curvature in the core of a flexible shaft wherein
there are no interta-ninar gaps will cause a disparity in the angular velocities of the
two ends of the shaft, In shafts in which there are interlarninar gaps any initial cur--
vature in the core tends to increase considerably the amount of tangential stress
present. The author describes an apparatus designed and built to test che validity
of her theoretical conctusion~. The experimental findings accord welt with the cal-

ABSTRACTt The article deals with the general principles of defectoscopy
applied to slag-w*lded Joints in parts of heavy hydraulic pres-
ses, developed by0T9NIITMASR in collaboration with the Novo-
Kramatorsk Machinebuilding Plant (in Kramatorsk), and with the
design and work of the new special defectoscopes "Y3A714" and
INAA-1oll.
The special "Y3A7M" defecto cope differs from the 'IY3A-7H"
standard model oy higher (3-;old) sensitivity and lowe-: aorking
frequency (1.8 Me/s instead of 2.5 Mc/9). The "~AL4-10" has
bmsioally the same parameters, it in a device for direct locat-
ing of defects by coordinates, weighs 10 kg , is small and
handy in shop work, but its electric system is simplified and

TITLE: Ultrasonic Defectoscopy of Electric Slag-Welded Joints.
(Ultrazvukovaya defectoskopiya shvov, vypolnennykh elektroshla-
kovoy avarkoy),
a neon lamp on the prismatic pinzoelectric detector.
The welding defects characteristic for multi-layer welding
are nearly completely absent in slag welding, but when the
normal technology is disturbed, non-fusion and cracks may
result. These defects show peculiar features which can be uti-
lised in reading the defectoscope oscillograme. Schematic dia-
grams in the article illustrate how the instrument reflects va-
rious kinds of non-fusion, cracks# and combinations of both
these defects.
The defectoacopy described Is now in use at the Novo-Kramatorok
Machinebuilding Plant and at the Barnaul Boiler Plant for in-
specting the production of hydraulic press parts up to 400 Mm
thickness. The next task will be the development of inspection
techniques for Joints of 1000 mm thickness.

kiy; its now special features - by M.F. Krakovyak and V.I. Ryzhov

TEXT: This is a report on the results of the principal studies on
defectoscopy, conducted at the laboratoriya defektoskopii (Laboratory
for defectoscopy) of the authors' institute (see Association) in the
past 2-3 years. Immersion - ultrasonic method. Full immersion. It
opens ample possibilities for automation 7 -defectoscopy. The following
methods and instruments belong here: A. Laboratory model of WAU.-l
(IDTa-1) defectoscope for the detection of faults in turbine disks. The
device may be used also for other workpieces by allowing the tank, in
which they are to be dipped, to be modified conformingly. B. Apparatus
and methods of automatic control of thin-walled tubes by Lamb's waves.
The HALk-2 (IDTs-2) defectoscope used for this purpose is able to detect

both the faults inside the metal and on the inner and outer tube surface.
C. Immersion - ultrasonic thickness gauge wnk-3 (ITTs-3). It operates
without contact with the workpiece (tube) basing on the n-times reflected
pulse. Partial immersion. D. The acoustic contact between radiator
and workpiece is brought about by a jet of water. This method is suited
for large-sized products (large-size sheets and tubes). Penetrating
acoustic irradiation. E. Ultrasonic defectoscope WA-1 Jdh'_D-1) for the
automatic control of tires. The types under A - E are intended for
control in series production, and thus have a closely specialized range
of application. Ultrasonic pulse-contact method. F. Control of thick

welded joints to 350 mm) (electric slag meth d) is performed by
means of a YAL~-10 (UDTs-10) defectoscope operating with four frequencies.
A neon lamp (12 kg weight) serves as an automaticksignal lamp Zor it.
Thicker welded joints caused the laboratory to examine the basic laws
governing the propagation of ultrasonics. The result of these studies
has been the YAL~-11 (UDTs-11) defectoscope which is able to control
welded joints up to 500 mm thick, and detects defects of 3-5 mm.
G. Original methods of controlling welded products by layers have been
developed. H. A method of determining the magnitude of defects in

forgings on the basis-of the amplitude of the reflected signal has been
worked out. I. Resonance - ultrasonic method. The respective control
systems have been improved. The resonance-defectoscove thickness gauges
YPT-5 (URT-5) and 3PT-6 (URT-6) permit thickness to be read off a scale
without diagrams nor computation devices. This is achieved by an
additional measuring circuit with a straight-line frequency adjustable
condenser. J. Various disturbances have been eliminated. K. Hadioscopy
with X- and gamma rays. Optimum conditions have been worked out for this
process, and models o7 scintillation recorders of radiation have been
developed. L.1 Both advantages and drawbacks of the gamma sc 'intillation
method have been examined. M. A special magnetic defectoscope
(DKN--l)'has been (leveloped.for the control of drive shafts and ottler
large workpieces Vdih--the greatest possible mechanization of the process.
Test models are used for controlling the cold-rolling process and pipes
at the Novo-Kramatorskiy mashinostroitelInyy zavod (Novo-Yramatorskiy
Machine-building Works), and axles-at the-Novocherkasakiy elektrovoznyy
zav6d (Novocherkassk Electric Locomotive Works). N. A special magnetic
transportable defectoscope AMI-2 (DMP-2) which operates with magnetic
powder defectoscopy and serves for layer examination of defects deep
