order for that polymer; in spite of earlier observations to the contrary by the

The x-ray diffraction study was performed using instrumentsU~S-50I with goniomoter
GUR-3 adjusted for measurements at small angles. It was e tablished that a 3-hr
thermal treatment at 160C results in almost total amorphization of the structure, as
can be seen in Fig. 1. However, it also leads to a two-f old rise of tenaoity and a

ABSTRACT: This is a continuation of earlier work by one of the authors (Frenkell
DAN SSSR v. 162, 836,, 1965) dealing 'with multistage self-ordering of polymers. In
the present study, on the basis of the analogy between solid and liquid states$
the authors investigate the increase in the orientation of Mstallites, resulting:
from a short-duration heating of previously oriented freshly formed fibers of poly-
vinyl alcohol) which do not an yet have high crystallicity. Most earlier experi-
mental studies of orientation at increased temperature were made in the presence of
mechanical stretching. The authors studied a fiber of polyvinyl alcohol produced
in acetone and subjected to sane orientation during the shaping process itself.
The crystallite orientation vas studied by x-ray diffraction in apparatus in Vhich

the sample could be rotated alout the axis of the primary beam. X-ray patterns
showed that in the freshly formed fiber the crystallites are full of defects and
are small in size. After placing the fiber for three minutes in a thermostat
heated to 225C (for a temper&bure close to the melting point), the fiber shrunk by
approximately 30%., lost approximately 10% of weight, and the azimuthal half angle
dropped from -17* to 12.5* arber one minute beating. After three minutes heating
the results were -30,, -34%, &ad 6.50 respectively. The orientation of the crys-
tals is greatly increased.. although many extraneous factors make an unambiguous
interpretation of the degree of orientation difficult. This vas accompanied by a
strong shrinking of the fiber,, thus evidencing a disorientation of its amorphous
part. On the basis of the reault the authors advanced the hypothesis that the
orientation of the crystallitos in the fibers has a thermodynamic character,, i.e.P
the self-orientation of the supermolecular structure elements occurs in the solid
