ABSTRACTa The authon express their opinion about "Statistike" a 567-
page manual on statistics-eldited by Academician S.G. Arumilin,
Gosstatizdat, 1956. The book, composed by a staff of 12 per-
sonap deals with the general theory of statistics and its branchesp
actual statistical practice, principles of statistical organi-
zation, the classification and summary of statistical facts and
statistical matters relating to population, public health,
culture, production, turnover of goods, etc.
The critics statethat while the structure of the book with
its multitude of examples# and references is satisfactory, there
are, nevertheless, some shortcomings. Some parts have not b'den
treated in detail, in particular those relating to economic
statistics and various subjects have been omitted. The fact
that the b`ook was composed by a staff, explains the lack of an
organic unity. There are also many repetitions for the same

On the whole it can be said that the manual possesses many
Cood qualities and is a valuable book for students of economic
vuzes and faculties. The above mentioned deficiencies can be
eliminated in a future edition.
