Approved For+ease 2001/0 P86-00244%00300260003- P/~ 7-0_?- J7-d 2 8 APR 1970 MEMORANDUM FOR: Acting Deputy Director for Support SUBJECT : Enclosure for X-Ray Examination of Suspect Packages and Mail 1. This memorandum is for your information only. 2. Recently, as an interim measure, X-ray equipment for the examination of suspect packages and mail was installed in the Agency Mail Room, where packages are examined after each mail delivery to the Headquarters Building. Instructions in its use for bomb inspection purposes was provided by United States Secret Service personnel, who placed the equipment on loan to us for an indefinite period. 3. For the long run a permanent enclosure, with appropriate radiation protection and with certain explosion-venting aspects to it, should be constructed, for the safety and protection of the Logistics Services Division/Mail Room personnel who use such equipment. We have reviewed this requirement with the Building Planning Staff at some length. Because of the expense involved, it appears appropriate to incorporate such an enclosure in one of the new structuresbeing planned for the Agency, rather than proceed with a requirement for a new enclosure at this time. We shall prepare such specifications for the Building Planning Staff and, in the meantime, we shall endeavor to strengthen the protection around the X-ray unit now being used in such ways as may be possible, and will review with the Office of Logistics relocation possibilities. p+r vv c.ui ., V ?
