the initial burnup instaht. Measurement results have shown that the breeding
coefficient of plutonium in uranim-water lattices with the indicated spacings
is greater thah'in uraniuiq-graphite lattices.

~.XT: The equipment-is used for the measurement of rapidly
changing pressures by employing capacitive transducers. It con-
s:Ots of the following elements (see Fig@ 1): a capacitive trans-
d4er 1 with a tuning plug 2 ; an.osc'illator 3 ; a tuned
amolifler 4 ; a DC vLmplifier 5 and a double-beam oscillograph

PulA, can be provided with 4 exchangeable diaphragms for pressures

of this unit is 20 pF and'the capnc~+-nnce change for full load is
1 pF. The transducer can'fie calibrated stat'ically by using com-
pressed air or oil. Anoilleir type of tra2aducer can be used for low
pressures, ranging from 0.1 - 17o5 kg/cm - This unit is either
a3.Lr- or water-cooled; it,can be calibrated statically and its
useful upper frequency is:24-5 Icc/s. Again,,the transducer has a
total capacity of 20 pF and -a waximuru full--;load capacitance chak2g-cr-
of 1 PF. Furthe,r-,transducers for maximun. pressure-indication-'-
very high-pressures, high-frequ .ency pressure measurements and
calibration are avail-able. The DC amplifier has a variable sensl'-
tivity from 20 -.0.05 Vlcm and a bandifidth of 0.5 Pic/s.
The equipment was used for investigations at the Department of
Thermal Piston Lngines of,the Lodz Polytechnic. It was found tha
the transducer, type PulA,.and the corresponding tuning plug were
comparatively large, so that there was some difficulty in
inserting them into the cy4nder to be inve.4tigated. It was
necessary to modify the cylinder head. However, the transducer

is advantageous in that it does-not require special cooling,
Another deficiency in the equipment is the vicinity of the oscilla
tor to tho.ongine (maximun distance between the oscillator and the
tuning plug iias 0.5 m) so that the oscillator temperature could

VNII NP-226 showed better properties than lubricant YaNZ-Z on an

TITLE: Peculiarities of cold rolling of oast iron eheets

TECT: Investigations were made with specimens and shiets of conventional
cast-iron containing in %: C 3 - 3.4; Si 1.4 - 1.7; Mn 0.4 - 0.7; S 0.1,
P aboxit 0.1. It was established that the optimum degree of deformation in cold
rolling of sheets which assures the highest indices of strength and ductility,
is 25 - 30%. The properties of sheets depend mainly on total detormation;_ +,he
effect of the factor of deformation divisibility during rolling was very, small.
High-quality longitudinal rolling of sheets is achieved in rolls with concave
outline, i.e. when the shape of the slit between the rolls corresponds to the
cross sectional shape of the sheet supplied for rolling. It is also required
that the sheets be free of slag trails. 'The use of spindle oil as a technological

Peculiarities of cold rolling of cast iron sheets A006IA101
grease makes it possible to obtain 7 - 11% drawing in one pass without overloading
the mill. The following distribution of draw!ngs ovor the passes is recommended:
1st pass 6 to 8%; 2 - 8 to 10%; 3 - 5 to 7%. To reduce the possibility of
hollow formation, Hsh,Of the roll barrel should be :> i00 units. The sheets should
be straightened after recrystallization annealing. Mills for the cold rolling
of oast-iron sheets should be equipped with 4-roll stands; the roll diameter
must be 350 - 400 mm (working rolls) and 900 - 1,100 mm (backing rolls) at a
length of the roll barrel L - bmax + 100 mm, where bmax is the maximum width of
the sheets to be rolled. The mill motor should have a power of about 350 - 400
kw.

TITLE: A High Voltage Bridge for Locating Faults on Cables

ABSTRACT: Since locating faults on cables by means of a "KM11 type
bridge or other methods is very laborious, a newly deoig-
ned bridge with a rectified high voltage power supply source
of approximately 30 kv has been worked out (Figure 1). The
insulation of all circuits has been tested at 45 kv, the
nominal rectified voltage being fixed at 30 kv and the oper-
ating voltage continuously adjustable between 0 and 30 kv.
An oil sparking-over apparatus of the "AMI-60" type is used
as a basic high voltage unit of the bridge and the rheochord
of the bridge of the "KM1' type is used as a measuring unit.
The low voltage part contains the 'IRA-350" type discharger
and the high voltage part contains 2 kerotrons of the "KRMM-
11011 type. All other methods give satisfactory results only
after laborious work of burning through the insulat'in at
the point of the fault. This portable instrument permits

not having passed the test voltage of 25 to 28 kv or having
an increased leakage of current. Measuring difficulties
with a high voltage bridge can appear only in rare cases
of breakdown of all the three cable cores or their rupture,
But even in these cases, the required accuracy can only be
obtained by utilizing a parallel cable as an auxiliary
core or by carrying out measurements at both ends of the
damaged cable. This bridge can be used also as a kenotron
apparatus for cable repair work. Its utilization is justi-
fied if a great number of 0.4 to 10 kv cable networks are
in service.

TITLE: A Simplified Construction of a Water-Jet Relay (Uproshchen-
naya konstruktsiya vodostruynogo rele)

ABSTRACTs The existing water-jet relays in pumping installations are
subject to the influence of salts and oxygen in the water.
In the irticle, a simple construction of a relay which is
independent of the water medium and the pressure in the
water pipe line is proposed. All parts are fitted to the
upper flange which is fastened by 6 bolts to the lower
flange. The lower flange is directly connected to the
water pipe in the center of which a 50-55 mm opening has
been made. Through the upper flange a rod touches the
water. At the end of the rod is an ebonite ball 50 mm in
diameter. The ball surface does not disturb the movement
of the water jet, yet receives the whole dynamic pressure.
At an average water-flow speed of 1-3 m1sec, the force of
the dynamic pressure on the ball reaches 6.1 - I kg, suf-
ficient for a reliable operation of the relay. When there
is any disturbance in the work of the pumping unit (de-

on the ball stops and a mobile contact switches off the
electric motor. These relays have been installed in the
Karaganda Coal Field. They are reliable undsr operating
conditions. They can be manufactured in every mechanical
workshop at a cost of 35 - 40 rubels.

ABSTRACT: Steps taken in the development of the rolling (R) of sheet and
strip of heavy nonferrous metals and alloys on 4-high mills are
described. Shortcomings in the work were due to the need to
change the design of certain assemblies of the mill: two pairs-of
stationary rollers were installed in place of the rephceable ta-
ble, the screw-up roller of the stretcher leveler was shifted, the
design of the intermediate table between the bending machine and
the back roller table was changed, and the support.of the inclined
roller table was replaced by additional inclined rollers, etc. In
the R of strip at high speeds, the best results were obtained by
the use of an emulsion made from type 59-1 paste as the lubri-

TEXT: In contrast to rolling of stee17 continuous rolling of
copper-base alloys in a tandem mill is a comparatively recent
innovation. Difficulties are still encountered in running this
process because of a large number of interdependent factors which
have to be controlled if satisfactory results are to be obtained.
The object of the investigation described in the present paper was
to e:�tablish the optimum operating conditions for continuous
rolling of brass 1162 U62) and J190 (L90) strip, and to obtain
data required for complete automation of the process. The
experimental work was carried out on a 3-stand tandem mill,
manufactured at the Novo-Kramatorskiy mashinostroitellnyy zavod
(Novo-Kramatorsk Machine-Building Plant). Each stand consisted
of a 4-high mill with the following characteristics:

diameter of the working and backing rolls - 375 and 1000 mm
respectively; length of the rolls - 1000 mm; diameter of the
r-driven reeler - 500 mm. Each stand was driven by a motor
VIBKO r,
Powe /1+0 (PVK90/40), 1+50 kW, 300-600 r.p.m., an tin 14-14/3
(HPl4'-"i'+/3)j 150 kw, 4oo-1300 r.p.m. motor being used to drive
the reeler. Rolling speeds of up to 150 m/sec were employed,
the initial and the final thickness-of the strip (400-800 mm
wide) was 6 and 1 mm respectively. The following parameters of
the process were studied: thickness of the strip leaving the
3-rd stand; pressure exerted by the mill on the rolls of each
stand; tension in the strip between the stands and between the
reeler and the 3-rd stand- speed of the rolls and speed of the
inter-stand tensioning roilers,i current in the circuit of the
motors driving the rollsi voltage in the generator.
A quantitative relationship between the tension in the strip and
its,thickness was established. It was found that the increase
in thickness of the leading and tail ends of the strip

(which are rolled with no tension applied) can be avoided by
reducing the distance between rolls by 0.2-0.3 mm during the
corresponding stage. It was shown, also, that by varying the
tension in the strip between the 2-nd and 3-rd stands, it is
possible, in the case of brass L621 to adjust its thickness by
0.2-0.3 mm during the first rolling stage and by 0.1-0.15 mm
during the second rolling stage. The results obtained indicate
that by increasing the front and back tension in the strip, edge
cracking can be avoided, or minimized. The specific power
consumption in rolling brass L62:and L90 was determined, and
curves were constructed illustrating the elastic formation of
the rolls and plastic deformation of brass strip in the course
of the process studied.
