Abstract : Infeld and Plebanski (abstract 33764) constructed a formalism,
from which one obtains (generally nonlinear) equations for the
electromagnetic field. The characteristic feature of this formal-
ism is the use of the electromagnetic field tensor without employ-
Ing potentials. The electromagnetic potential appears in this
theory as a derived quantity. The Maxwell equations follow from
this theory as a limiting case when the variational principle is
used with a supplementary condition.
