TITLE: An investigation of controlled spark dischargers operating
in parallel
PERIODICAL: Zhurnal tekhnicheskoy fiziki, v. 32, no. 11, 1962,. 1386-1391
TEXT: To avoid the disadvantage inherent in simply connected dischargers
(Fig. 1a), an improved scheme as shown in Fig. lb is proposed; during the
operation of one of the dischargers the potential of the other one varies
only within a certain period of time. The change in potential is
determined by the propagation time of the electromagnetic wave along the
cables K1 and K2 between the operating and-nonoperating dischargers. *
This requires that the delay time should noi be shorter than the possible
spread of the time of operation of all the dischargers. The experiments
were carried out on dischargers developed in 1956 in the Laboratoriya
tekhniki vyijokikh napryazheniy Leningradskogo politekhnicheskogo Instituta
(Laboratory of High-voltage Technique of the Leningrad Polytechnic
Institute). The dischargers have variable discharge gaps and the

electrodes are hemispherical. The apparatus for the experiment (Fig. 3)
comprised nine cells (capacitor, discharger, delay cable). The average
time T and the maximum and the minimum time between switching on the
ignition pulse at a discharger and the moment of its break-down wera
determinou by oscillographs. Conclusions: All the nine dischargers
operate well with a discharge gap of 50 mm at potentials of up to 100 kv.
If the potentlal is lowered 1;0 95 kv, nonsynohronous operation of the
individual dischargers ensures. At a potential of 110 ky the times 'r of
the nine dischargers lie between 0.11 and 0-15 psec, aria at 100 kv
between 0-15 and 0.20 ~tsec. The dischargers operated in synchrony also
when the devia.tion of T somewhat exceeded the delay time. There are
5 figures and 1 table.

:and has been described elsewhere by the author (ZhTF, 30, 954, 1960). The control
ispark of the trigatron under test was initiated, as shown in the figure, by discharge
i'of a capacitor (C1 in the figure) through a second trigatron. Control spark currents
;up to 12 kA with an oscillation period of 2.4 microsec were employed to trigger the
itrigatron of the first type,, and currents up to 60 JcA with an oscillation period of

60 kV was required to assure discharge across the some

U cluded in the control circuit. The voltage at which the

triggor spark and the main discharge, was alway
when the potential U. of the main electrode was negative
ntial Un of the control electrode was posi-"

tive (see the figure). When the triggering power was
To oscilloscope high (Ro 14 0) and the main gap was long, the delay
between the trigger spark and the main discharge was
almost independent of the main gap voltage when the last
IDiagram of the test set-up was high; when the main gap voltage was reduced below the-
minimum value for operation of the trigatron with a low
!power control spark, the delay suddenly became several orders of magnitude longer and
,-as again almost independent of the voltage. Possible mechanisms involved in trigatron
Ibperation are discussed and it is suggested that the efficacy of a high power trigger
,Spark is due to the formation of a shock wave that traverses tbe main gap. Orig. art.

Abstract; DeScription of the design of filters for glycerin water (GW) and
glycerin, developed at the Zaporozh'iye Butter and Pats Combine.
Neutralized GPW is pumped to a vacuum filter and there-Prom to evapora-
tion apparatus. GW feed and liquid level in evaporation apparatus
are regulated automatically (a diagram is shown). Filter housing is
made of sheet, steel 5-6 mm thick, filtration drum is made frcm metal
rods 10 mm in diameter. On top the filter is covered by 2 layers of
filter cloth. Filtration surface is of 2 m2. The drum is mounted
on a hollow abaft through which the filtered glycerin water is dis-
charged.

'.BSTRACT: The authors explain the points system used in amateur radio
competitions and show hor it is biased against radio ope-
rators in the zero region (Par East and 81beria) compared
with o-.oerators in the European part of the USSR. To rectify
this, a new -ointS s,rStem is suggested in which the points
awarded increase with the distancq'over -rhich contact is
made. The present point system tiakes into account the dis-
appointing results achieved in competitions by zero region
operators.

PERIODICAL: Zhurnal tekhnicheskoy
2-:)P. 954-963
Operation of Controlled SDark
fi~iki, 1960, Vol. 30, No. 8,
TEXT: The author studies the dependence of the time delay of the operation
of a controlled spark discharger in the air at atmospheric pressure on
various ignition conditions. It is further attempted to improve the char-
acteristics of -the discharger, and a construction with short time delay
of operation is offered for voltages of up to 150 kv. The study was con-
ducted with the participation of G. S. Kichayev , and a discharger with
hemispherical electrodEs (Fig. I)-was used for the purpose. With the aid
of a circuit diagram (Fig. 2) the author discusses the mode of operation
and the control of the discharger. The time between the application of the
control voltage pulse and the appearance of current in the main circuit
was recorded wi',h an oscilloscope (Fig. 3). The ignition current was re-
corded with a Rogovskiy belt. The author discusses preparatory experiments

and the dischare-e mecha-nism of the discharger as well as results obtained
from an experimental study of the mode of operation of a controlled spark
discharger. The discussion is extended to three volt-second characteristics
(Figs. 5, 6, and 7), and to one of the oscillograms, on which the author
measured the time elapsing until the discharge (Fig. 8). The voltage pulse
applied to the incendiary electrode (Fig. 1) when starting the dischorge
was found to play the main part. With a view to keeping the time interval
until the formation of -,he discharge as short as possible, thii. voltage
pulse should be the largest possible and should persist during the dis-
charge formation. In the case of dischargers supposed to operate with short
delay times of operation and small spread, it is recommended that the
ignition gap be enlarged, the incendiary voltage pulse should have an
optimum value, and have an inverse pole with respect to the main discharge
gap. There are 8 figures and 6 references: 2 Soviet and 4 US.

TEXT: In the present paper, a new method of studying the cross section of
the electron cluster in acceleration is suggested, and several experi-
mental results concerning the compression of the electron cluster are
given. The experiments were carried out on the synchrotron of the
Fizicheskiy institut im. P. N. Lebedeva AN SSSR (Institute of Physics
!men! P. N. Lebedev of the AS, USSR). Several formulas for calculating
the betatron oticillations are mentioned and discussed. When carrying out
the experiments the electron radiation in a porcelain chamber was observed
through a window and photographed by means of a motion-picture camera. The
blackening of the pictures was measured by means of a microphotometer,

and Fig. 1 shows the photograph of an electron cluster and the results of
measurement. The elliptical shape of the cluster corresponds to the cross
section of the chamber of the accelerator. In Fig. 2 the experimental re-
sults are compared with the theoretical calculations of the dependence of
the relative amplitudes of the oscillation types on the duration of
acceleration. It is found that the radial dimension of the cluster of the
accelerated electrons decreases rapidly according to the adiabatic law.
Besides, the center of the cluster is compressed more rapidly than the
peripheral parts. The perpendicular diameter of the cluster decreases
approximately according to the adiabatic law. Further experiments showed
that the compression of the electron cluster in a progressive electron
drift is the same as when no premeditated drift of the electrons exists.

Sciences, and Professor P. A. Cherenkov for making work on the accele-
rator possible. There are 2 figures and 7 references: 6 Soviet and
