i. Since its inception, the CIA Library has compiled bibli-
ographies of books and periodical articles in response to specific
research or operational requirements of CIA components. Some of
these bibliographies were comprehensive In coverage,-and others were
simple background reading lists on a particular area or subject,,
2.. Late in 1964 a reduction of staff forced the CIA Library
to reduce the publication of its bibliographies and to limit its
bibliographic service to the preparation of very brief and informal
work slips or short typed lists in lieu of formal publication.
3. Recent personnel cuts within the Central Reference Service
have necessitated a further reduction in the bibliographic service
provided by the CIA Library,, Hereafter, as a general rule,
bibliographic service will be limited to the identification of
bibliographic toots, such as indexing and abstracting services.

subjects for use by Library patrons, Exceptions to this policy may
be authorized by the Librarian or the Chief of the Reference Branch.
