Izvestiya. Seriya fizicheskaya, To 30, no. 12, 1966, 1882-1887 TOPIC TAGS: electron emission, secondary electron, electric field, magnesium oxide ABSTRACT:-An experimental study was made to explain t'he.mechanism of the field- lenhanced secondary-electron emission from porouj MgO. Samplei.were pre- pared by depositing Mg smoke in the air an 200 A-thick aluminum membranes stretched over fine supporting meshes with 70Z penetrability, which made !it possible to bombard the material wiLh electrons from both the front !and the back. The investigations of the secondary emission coefficients ae a function of the electric field intensities included measurements Card 1/2 ACC NRs AP7001719 liFeif6rTkd'E6nsedtitife-lk-*6fi'*'ibe- -iiiii* s~cijle, measuiemen'ts made *on iiiriia-I *0 samples, and measurements of total secondary emission coefficients band their non-inertial components at primary electron energies in the Irange of 2-5 keV with irradiation from the front and back. From an .analysis of the curves, it was concluded that the field-enhanced secondary emission, as well as the occurrence o~f 'self -consis tint emiisip~,_'Cannoif be explained by a single physical cause but aust be attributed to the Isuperposition of two effects due to different mechanisms. The field en-' hanced emission occurs, it is stated, in the whole range of the applied 1potential dIfference, to which inertial emission is sdded only when the 'field's intensity is sufficiently high. :Mmaurements ware also made on .porous Csl film, and they Ukewise-showed high coefficient values of 'field -enhanced emission. The au ,thors thank Do V. Zernov for evaluating ~the work. TITLE: Investi.cation of the Errors in X-ray Spectroscopic knalysis PERIODICkL: Zhurnal analiticheskoy khimii,1959,vol 14,Nr 4,PP396-403 (USSR) kBSTRACT: The errors of X-ray spectroscopic analysis were investigated by quantitative X-ray spectrographic determination of zir- conium and hafnium in minerals and ores. The authors ascer- tained the relations between the parameters of the calibra- tion curve on the side, and changes of the working conditions during the analysis and the development of the spectrogram on the other side. Contrary to optical spectroscopic analysis where generally both parameters of the calibration Gurve change in the course of time, only a recip:,ocal parallel displa- cement of the calibration curve occurs in X-ray spectroscopic analysis. This fact permits the determinations on the basis of a single constant calibration curve, the position of which is controlled with the help of a standard with not too small a content of the respective element. The straying of the re- - error due sults can be split up into three components: d R to lack of reproducibility, characterized by the straying of Card 1/4 the results in relation to an arithmetic mean which was cal- Investigatlon of the Errors in X-ray Spectroscopic SOV/75-14-4-2/30 Analysis culated for a short period; a Ei - error caused by the in- stability 3f the prccess of rubbing the sample into the anode; oTO - error ca-~ed by other uncontrollable factors which change ''.n the nourse of time. The most important of these factors is the lack of constancy during the development of the film. At known values of aR? (I Ei and 0T' , the constant calibration curve must be displaced parallellyonly if the point which corresponds to the control Ptandard sample, is further away than '2 2 ~crR + number of parallel rubbings, n - nm m number of parallel determinations of each rubbing). If this parallel displacement of the curve surmounts the limits (YR 2 Card 2/4 6h 2 ~~ + -'~+ (~jt2 , the results are uncertain and the nm m Investigation of the Errors in X-ray Spectroscopic SOV/75-14-4-2/3o Analysis determination must be repeated. When using an anode with four slits for increasing the exactitude of the determinations,it is suitable to choose m = 2, n. 2 for the sample to be ana- lyzed as well as for the standard. When using a constant cali- bration curve for rapid determinations, without the use of a control standard, an increase in the number of exposures for each rubbing is of little consequence cn the results, since the error in the determination depends mainly on C2 + (12,, which Ei T quantity is not reduced thereby. The accuracy of the determina- tion, when using a constant calibration curve, cannot be in- crea3ed even by a periodical check of the calibration curve. The error analysis is fully discussed in the paper. There are the following tables. 1) and 2); Results of the examination of the hypothesis of a normal error distribution for errors in the reproducibility, and for the straying between the re- sults of X-ray spectroscopic analysis and chemical analysis; 3) and 5): Compilation of the calculation data for the inves- tigation of the straying.which is caused by the influence of Card 3/4 one factor (Table 3) and by the influence of two factors Investigation of the Errors in X-ray Spectroscopic SOV/75-14-4-2/3o Analysis (Table 5); 4)t Root square daviations and the stra7ing coefficients in the determination of hafnium; 6) Results of the analysis of error strayings, which was carried out by the determination of zirconium; 7) Relation between the quantity of the errors in the determination of,&S on the one side, and the number of rubbings (m) and the number of parallel deter- minations (n), or, the other side.
