TITLE: Investigation of field-enhanced secgndary-electron emission frarl

Principles of Cathode Electronics held in Leningrad from 22-26 October 196Y
SOURCE: AN SSSR. Izvestiya. Seriya fizicheskaya, To 30, no. 12, 1966,
1882-1887
TOPIC TAGS: electron emission, secondary electron, electric field,
magnesium oxide
ABSTRACT:-An experimental study was made to explain t'he.mechanism of the field-
lenhanced secondary-electron emission from porouj MgO. Samplei.were pre-
pared by depositing Mg smoke in the air an 200 A-thick aluminum membranes
stretched over fine supporting meshes with 70Z penetrability, which made
!it possible to bombard the material wiLh electrons from both the front
!and the back. The investigations of the secondary emission coefficients
ae a function of the electric field intensities included measurements

*0 samples, and measurements of total secondary emission coefficients
band their non-inertial components at primary electron energies in the
Irange of 2-5 keV with irradiation from the front and back. From an
.analysis of the curves, it was concluded that the field-enhanced secondary
emission, as well as the occurrence o~f 'self -consis tint emiisip~,_'Cannoif
be explained by a single physical cause but aust be attributed to the
Isuperposition of two effects due to different mechanisms. The field en-'
hanced emission occurs, it is stated, in the whole range of the applied
1potential dIfference, to which inertial emission is sdded only when the
'field's intensity is sufficiently high. :Mmaurements ware also made on
.porous Csl film, and they Ukewise-showed high coefficient values of
'field
-enhanced emission. The au ,thors thank Do V. Zernov for evaluating
~the work. IZLI

ABSTRACT: In the rocks of the acidic series zirconiui,., and together
with it hafniuzi, is al-most orily founa as zircon. Thus the
Zr-'If ratio cf the zircon can be ta,.I:en as that of the rock.
This ratio depends on the oriLin. The i~:neous rocks of the
southern slope of the Zailiyakiy Alatau vere investigated
because there all types from -,abbros to alas~kite 8,ranites

ABSTRACT: 48 rock samples from three magmatic complexes of the Lovo-

was determined by the X-ray spectrometric method. The
results are recorded in a table. The zirconium and hafnium
content ranges from 0,07 to 2.31% Zro 2 and from 0-015 to
0.057% Hf021 while the variations of the zirconium-hafnium
ratio are'insignificant. Zr and fff are concentrated in
later magmatic complexas:0.167% in the first, 0.290,c4 in
the second and 1.49% Zr02 in the third. Agpaitic rocks

TITLE: Investi.cation of the Errors in X-ray Spectroscopic knalysis
PERIODICkL: Zhurnal analiticheskoy khimii,1959,vol 14,Nr 4,PP396-403 (USSR)
kBSTRACT: The errors of X-ray spectroscopic analysis were investigated
by quantitative X-ray spectrographic determination of zir-
conium and hafnium in minerals and ores. The authors ascer-
tained the relations between the parameters of the calibra-
tion curve on the side, and changes of the working conditions
during the analysis and the development of the spectrogram on
the other side. Contrary to optical spectroscopic analysis
where generally both parameters of the calibration Gurve
change in the course of time, only a recip:,ocal parallel displa-
cement of the calibration curve occurs in X-ray spectroscopic
analysis. This fact permits the determinations on the basis
of a single constant calibration curve, the position of which
is controlled with the help of a standard with not too small
a content of the respective element. The straying of the re-
- error due
sults can be split up into three components: d
R
to lack of reproducibility, characterized by the straying of

culated for a short period; a Ei - error caused by the in-
stability 3f the prccess of rubbing the sample into the anode;
oTO - error ca-~ed by other uncontrollable factors which
change ''.n the nourse of time. The most important of these
factors is the lack of constancy during the development of
the film. At known values of aR? (I Ei and 0T' , the constant
calibration curve must be displaced parallellyonly if the
point which corresponds to the control Ptandard sample, is
further away than

determination must be repeated. When using an anode with four
slits for increasing the exactitude of the determinations,it
is suitable to choose m = 2, n. 2 for the sample to be ana-
lyzed as well as for the standard. When using a constant cali-
bration curve for rapid determinations, without the use of a
control standard, an increase in the number of exposures for
each rubbing is of little consequence cn the results, since the
error in the determination depends mainly on C2 + (12,, which
Ei T
quantity is not reduced thereby. The accuracy of the determina-
tion, when using a constant calibration curve, cannot be in-
crea3ed even by a periodical check of the calibration curve.
The error analysis is fully discussed in the paper. There are
the following tables. 1) and 2); Results of the examination
of the hypothesis of a normal error distribution for errors
in the reproducibility, and for the straying between the re-
sults of X-ray spectroscopic analysis and chemical analysis;

Abstract: Case history of abdominal distention with severe symptoms, due to
fresh alfalfa in 30 cows: 20 responded to conventional medical treatment.
When emergency rumenotomy in one of the other 10 who was apparently on the,
point of death was followed by astoundingly swift recovery, the remaining
9 were also so operated, with excellent results; antibiotics and sulfonamides
seemed to effectively prevent all complications. Photograph.

ABSTRAM', It is well known that steel tends to become brittle in the cold and that this
cold brittl&iess increases during cyclic stress, even at stresses below the fatigue WWt,
due both to the effects of plastic deformation and to the fatigue cracks which appear at the
sites of stress concentration. In order to relate brittle'strength and cold brittleness to
the creep limit, the authors investigated the effect of cyclic bending stress (3000/min.)
on the critical embrittlement temperature of smooth and notched samples of steel 3, -
steel SKS-1 and steel SEhL-4 in the annealed, hot-,rolled or superheated (1150C) states-'
The critical embrittlement temperature was determined in two ways: from the curves
relating temperature to impact toughness and to the relative fibrosity of the break,

PURPOSE AND COVERAGE: The book presents results of experimental research and theore4-1-
tical generalizations on pr lems of cold brittleness and ultimate plasticity of low
carbon and low alloy steelsted in shipbuilding., The'book analyses the effect of
temperature, loading speedp 11tress, scale,-ana Elastic energy on the above properties..:
of metals, and suggests methods for estimating the coefficient of ductility and
ultimate plasticity of metals in structural elements. The book is intended for engi-1.
neering and scientific personnel serving as specialists in ~'jysical metallLu~ d
shipbuildihg technology., and may also be useful to workers in related fields.0
