1, Attached is a copy of a letter from the Defense Intelligence
School, with an enclosure providing a brief description of each
course being offered in FY 1973.
L. Please indicate on enclosure 3 the number o:E students
your component would. like to enroll in each of the courses and
return enclosure 3 to this office by Friday, 14 January.
3. You may want to give special consideration to a new course,
"Indications and Warning Course, ".(Tab I&W). CIA students for the
"Nationa:L Senior Intelligence Course" are selected by the Training
Selection Board; however, you are requested to indicate the number
of students that you would like to send to this course.
4. We will appreciate your cooperation in getting your request
for quotas to us so that we can meet the deadline set; by DIS.

1. Rei'ercnce DIA Instruction 2~-2, Subject: Defense Intelligence School
Resident Courses.
2. The Defense Intelligence School (DIS) is a Joint Chiefs of Staff
chartered educational institution charged ~~~ith the mission of providing
intelligence eduration for the Department of Defense in the areas of:
a. ;Intelligence career development programs of the Military Services
(officers and civilians) and DIA; and intelligence education said training
in support ofjoint commands and agencies.
b. Defense Attaches and Defense Attache ~>upport Personnel training.
c. Joint intelligence orientation.
3. The L7TS is a:Lso charged with the mission of providing education for
LISIB nte7:rbers in the area of the application of information science to
intelli~,ence.
4. The rattached tentative schedule for DIS Fx 1973 courses (enclosure 1)
reflects guidance received to date regarding course needs. .
5. A brief description of the courses is provided in enclosure 2. Reference
1 vrovides addit:l.onal ia~forrzstion on the courses.
6. To e:r,able the DIS to finalize the FY 1973 course schedule and quotas,
request the following information be provided by 20 January 1972:

To prr~vide DOD civilians who are hired as entry level civilian intelli-
gence analysts with an understanding of fundamental intelligence func-
tions and research tec}uziques, and orientation to the intelligence
community with specialized workshops for analysts in special areas of
interest.

DOD civilian, personnel, recently hired at entry level civilian intelligence
analysts, or those with narrow or limited intelligence experience.

PURPOSE
To provide military officers and civilians with job-oriented, professional
intelligence training for assignment at the intermediate joint staff
officer level in the national, unified staff and departrr:ental intelligence
structure.
CRITERIA FOR STUDENT SrLECTION
T}ie DE.fense Intelligence Officers' Introductory Geurse is structured
for military officers grades 0-3 - 0-4 entering, positions in
DOD intelligence organizations without substantial prior intelligence
experience or training, with experience in a limited or narrow area
of intelligence, or officers taking the DIS Pastgraduate Intelligence
Course. Class 1-73 is the first of a consecutive sequence of three
courses (DIOIC, DIOC, DIMC) which, undertaken as .a unit, Constitute
the DIS Postgraduate Intelligence Co~~rse.

Intelligence Officers' Introductory Course or equivalent Service intelligence
schoo]_, or have a minimum of two years intelligence experience. Students

as a Unit, constitute the DIS Postgraduate Intelligence Course.

To provide military officers and civilians with job-oriented, professional
training in the management of intelligence resources at the intermediate
joint staff officer level in the national, unified and departmental
intelligence structure.
Conunissioned officers or civilian employees caho rave attended a basic
intelligence course or have a minimum of 2 years intelligence experience,
or have attended the Defense .Intelligence Operations Course. Students
should possess a baccaulaureate degree. Personnel attending; this course
should be selectees-for intelligence management positions or Postgraduate
Intelligence Students. `i`iie DIMC is the third anti final consecutive se~~nent
of three courses (DIOIC, DIOC, DIMC) which, undezTtalcen as a unit, constitute
the DIS Postgraduate Intelligence Course. `I'ilis course is also offered as
a separate course in the fall.

To enhance the preparation of selected senior military officers and
key I)OD civilian personnel for joint con~Qrtiand, staff, or policy-making
positions in the international and national uecurity structure. The
course emphasizes the study of intelligence functions, intelligence
in national security, management of intelligence, -the national
intelligence structure, joint intelligence staffs and the application
of intelligence in the decision--making process..

Military intelligence officers in grade 05 or those selected for
promotion to OS and af~ove and civilian intelligence personnel in grade
GS-13 and above. Nominees should have broad trainin and e

in the intelligence field. Waivers for highly qualified personnel will

PURPOSE
To provide active duty military officers and career civilians with
an appreciation of joint intelligence, its primary purpose, major
functions and the application of the camponen~ts of strategic intelligence
to the study of the-major world areas. -
Active duty commissioned officers and professional civilian employees.
Nominees should be newly assigned to positions raquirin~; knowledge of
interagency and joint intelligence relationships, or recently reassigned
to intelligence positions after having been away from t7ie intelligence
field for an extended period.
