characterized. These alIV1 caters of di-p-tolylphosphinous acid were found to
react with carbon tetrachloride, liberating the alkyl chloride and forming di-p-
tolyltrichloromethylp~hosphine oxide in 53-78% yields. Trne esters also reacted
,readily with chlorall liberating the alkyl chloride and forming the beta)beta-
--dichlorovinyl ester af di-p-tolylphosphirhc acid. The infrared spectra of some

Abstract: Verification of the calculat* scheme worked out by the author
for the runoff of flood water in mountain conditions (Referat Zhur
FizikA, 1955, 2"1) using as an example a mountain basin, vhere
the runoff is obtained mostly by melting. T4e article gives a
brief description of the basic premises of the computation scheme,
the variation the water flow on the period of snow melting with
temperature of the air and with altitude of the snow line, the
integral curves of the altitude-zone distribution of the area of
the basin and of the snow reserves, the dependence of the runoff
during the vegetation period on the water reservee in the snow cover,

ABSTRACT: Based on the analysis of runoff formation of the iivers of the Altay-
Sayan-Baykal mountain terrain, a possibility has been fotmd for forecasting
the vernal runoff from the data of snow-storage in 1,Agh-altitude areas.
Methods for determining snow storage are recommended. The correlation
coefficient between the vernal runoff and the maximum snow storage is 0.85-
0. 94 which indicates a close association between them. Expressions for fore-
casting the May-June runoff for a number of local rivers have been found, as
well as an expression for the maximum discharge of the Yenibey River near
Krasnoyarsk based on the remaining snow storage up to Z,000-m altitude. It is

suggested that a number of experimental mountain basins be explored with
equipment for measuring snow storage, snow melting, surface and subsurface
runoffs in various landscape areas for the purpose of a profound study of run-
