TITLE: Longitudinal cracks on flanges of railway rails.
(Prodollnye treshchiny na flaatsakh zheleznodorozhnykh
rellsov).
PERIODICAL: "Stall" (Steel), 1957, No.4, pp.34?-351 (U.S.S.R.)
ABSTRACT: An investigation of the causes of surface defects
on the base and head of rails in the form of cracks
and fissures stretched along the rolling direction,
usually associated with surface bubbles, was investigated.
It was found that the observei defects originate from
longitudinal cracks often present on the bottom part
of the ingots of rail steel. The appearance of the
above cracks on ingots was co-related with the fluidity
of steel and the rate of casting of ingots. With
bottom pouring the optimum temperature is limited to
a narrow temperature range 1470-1475, therefore, the
real solution for the problem is tOD pouring. From top
Ity rails increases
poured ingots the yield of the quall
to 90-92%. There are two tables, 9 figures and 2
Russian references.

PERIODICAL: "Stall" (Steel)p 1957,^Nc).6, pp.536-540 (USSR).
ABSTRACT: It is pointed out that in the majority of investigations
on the improvement of the qnality of rails, studies were
limited to the treatment of metal in tee and bed shaped
passes while the initial reduction on a blooming mill was
not, considered., The authorp in cooperation with engineers
P..M..Chepelev, P.F.Kruglyakq M.K.Dolzhenkova and technicians
P.M.Sabutskiy and I V.Podze:rkop carried out an investiga-
tion of the influence of the rolling of ingots to semis of
various heightp i.e., with -various ratio of height to
width on the quality of rails. It is concluded that on the
reduction of ingots on a bl:)oming mill it is necessary to
prevent the development of spread and tensile stresses
particularly on sectors of faces from which the head and
food of rails is made. The most rational shape of a rail
ingot is rectangular, and the foot and head of rails should
be formed from narrow faces of the ingot. As at a deep
impression of the crown of the lower roll in the first
trapezoidal pass a non-uniflorm deformation in the rail

foot takes place and there Js a possibility of the forma-
tion of hair cracks and cracks with a subsequent decrease
in the impact strength.of the footp it is advisable to
use low crown - of a heiglat about 20 mm. On increasing
the height of the starti% billet, the surface of rail
JAproves. However, for the prevention of a deterioration,
of the mechanical properties of rails, on choosiiqg the
height of the semis, the shape of the ingot and the thi ck-
ness of zone of columnar cry-stals sho-old be taken into con-
sideration. For better working of the 'oot in all trapez-
oidal passes (with low crowns) and for increasing the out-
put of the mill 2-3 trapezoidal passes should be-used. The
use.of spread above 20 mm 'used in all bed shaped passes
should be decreased to 6-8 mm. It would be beneficial to
use 5 of such passes. There are 6 figures and 9 referen-
ces, including 8 Slavic.

PERIODICAL: Stall, 1959, Nr 3, p 269 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: In order to determine the influence of slow cooling on the
mechanical properties of Bessemer rails, a n:amber of
specimens of rails from three heats, differing main2y in
their carbon content, were cut out. Half of the specimens
were Q,ooled under conditions. similar to the works,
ccnditions of cooling rails, while the other half was cooled
in a specially insulated box pre-heated to 400 - 450 OC -
the rate of cooling of which could be ccntrolled. On
charging into the box, the temperature of the specimens
was 550 -- 600 C. The spec.-'-Mens were cooled in 8he box,
covered with a lid, to a temperature of 150-200 C durirZ
? hours and then to atmospheric temperature in 90 minutes
in the open box. Reasuremeat of mechanical prcpert-Jes
including impact strength at normal and sub-zero temperatures
and bending of the rail foot (GOST 5633-51) indicated that

TEXT: Mass spectrometry was used to determine the isotope 0 18 in sulfuric
acid. Sulfuric acid is diluted down to a cc-neentration of 0.05%, 0-05 N
BaCl 2 solution added, and barium sulfate reduced with spectroscopically
pure carbon in a small quartz tube (Irig.) 4n vacuo (10-5 -6

at 900-9500C. In the CO 2 formed, the 0 18 content was determined with
mass spectrometers of the types MC-1 (M8-1), MC-4 (MS-4), and MR-130
(MI-130).. The results show that the 0 18 content in a sulfuric acid sample
varies in a range of from 1-52 to 1.62 atom%. It was studied whether Le

mode propagated. The procedure for growing the whiskers was described elsewhere (Lit.
-fiz. sb. v. 2, 151, 1962). The equations necessary to reduce the measurement data
were solved with an electronic computer. 'Me results were compared with the frequency
dependence of the complex dielectric constant of n-type silicon. The results showed
that in the region of the resoriant frequency (1.4 x 1010 cps) there is a sbarp
.anomalous dispersion, where a' decreases rapidly from 295 to -234.. and then asymptot-
ically approaches zero with increasing frequency. With decreasing frequencyp a'

first decreases to 160 and then jumps to -230 at 1-.2 x 103-0 cps. The reason for the
anomaly is not clear. The value of e" changes in the range from 9 to 13 Gco between
15 and 45,, but increases appraximately U)O-fold at the resonant rrequency. The
causes of the ferroelectric contribution to the dipole moment of the albstance are
. briefly discussed. Orig. art. has: 1 figure and I table.

ABSTRACT: The authors measured the absorption coefficient of plane-polarized
light of thin single-crystal films and Sb2S3single crystals in the photon energy
range of 0. 6-1. 75 ev. It is shown that the maximum of the valence band and the
minimum of the conduction band do not coincide. In an approximation of highly
bound electrons, models constructed from the energy band structure agree with the
experimental data. [Translation of abstract]

Institut kibernetiki, - Akademii naui Ukrainskoy SSR (Institute of Cybernetics, AcaAssW.--
of Soiencesp Ukrainian SSR) and placed in produotion in 1964,are described.
A-lachine computation capabilities include addition, subtraction, multiplication#
.diviuion, square root extraction, basic and invorse trigonometric functions,
hyperbolic functions, logarithms, exponentiala, scalar values of vectors, solution
,of simultaneous algebraic equatim-9, solution of ordinary differential equations,
evaluation of definite integrals, solution of t:=ecendental and nonlinear algebraic
.equationa, and otherep --a total of 31 operatia.,io. The machine is described as
being capable of using standard programs with panched-card input, and executing
.operations at the rate of about 30-40 operations per second. The machine's compact-
ness (console dimensions 1270 x 910 x 760 mm ) are praised. The computer uses a

4220-volt source, utilizes a single-phase sltemLting current, and has 2000 triodes
and 10 000 diodes. The modular nature of the mitchine's construction is emphasized;
lin all, 473 blocks were used in its construction. Machine words are coded in the
decimal number system, using four digit positione (zeroes or ones) for each of the
ciphers zero through nine. Both fixed and floating point operations are
'alloivedt and the limits of numeric representation are 10-1 and 109. Arithmetical
~operations are performed with two registers, oni? of which serves as an accumulator.1
The symbolic programming system uses one addreei3 per instruction, and execution
takes place in numerical instruction order except for necessary sense branching.
Programs in execution are stored in a program mi)mory "matrix", inemonic codes
represent operations for punched-card input and ten instructions per card may be
input. Output display utilizes IN-1 indicator lampe. Orig. art. hast 2 figures.

TEXT: The wind speed is measured by a 3-cup vane connect-
ed through a reducing gear selsyri transducer BC-404 (BS-404). A
similar selsyn is connected to the axis of a weather vane measurirg
the wind direction. The automatic recorder is connected to the
unit by an B-core cable. The average velocity of the wind is deter-
mined from the angle of rotation of the receiving selsyn every 10
minutes by means of a mechanical arrangement. The latter consists
of a reduction gear with a ratchet, whose pawl frees the output

ABSTRACT: Attenuation due to.interaction betwef.n a iezoelectric field.and the
p
free carriers in a semiconductoiVfs"ealculated For an elastic wave traveling along
a piezoelectric-semiconductor interface for two simple surface models: the "mirror"
interface and the diffuse interface. It is asstmed that the plane z = 0 is the i
interfacc between a piezoelectric crystal and a semiconductor with no piezoelectric~
properties filling thespace Z > 0, that the semiconductor has a single type of
carrier with rms; dispersion and is non-degenerate, and that both the semiconductor
and piezoelectric crystal are elastically isotropic, the piezoelectric crystal be-
