Kazansk. aviats. in-ta, 1958, Vol. 33-34, pp. 461-466 TEXT; The author carried out theoretical investigations of the motion of cylindrical blanks rotating round a pivot and determined the orientation time of these blanks (calculated in fractions of a second), which Is the fundamental parameter for the determination of efficiency of feeder mechanisms for technological equipment. The differential equation of motion of the cylindrical blank center of gravity was derived, the accuracy of which was checked In an experimental way by shooting the investigated process with a KC (K3)-500 film camera. It was found that the difference between the calculated rotation time of the blank Card 1/2 S/123/60/000/010/002/011 A004/Aooi Investigating the Motion of Cylindrical Blanks During Their Rotation Round an Axis I/ round the axis and the time determined during the experimental process, was with- in permissible limits. In the present investigation the shine effect is investigated on LiF crystals deformed at 20C. In additionp the thiclmess of the layer with the increased dislocation density was estimated. The experimental procedure of deforming the samples and determining the dislocation den- sity was the same as-in the earlier paper. TITLE The Activation Cross Section of U236 PERIODICAL Atomnaja Energija, I., faso. 50 130-131 (1956) Issued: 1 / 1957 The values of the cross sections of radiation capture and fission are of par- tioular importance for thermal neutrons. Here the cross section of radiation capture was measured from the P-activitj of th'e U237 produced on the occasion 236 236 of the capture of neutrons by U The U samples were irradiated in the re- flector of the reactor of the RPT (?). The strength of the neutron bundle was determined from the activity of a gold foil which was irradiated together with the sample. The authors made use of two U236 samples: Sample No 1 was produced by the chemical separation of uranium from deposited plutonium containing Fu 240. Sample No 2 was obtained by long irradiation of uranium in a reactor, U236 on this occasion accumulated by the radiation capture of neutrons in U235. After irradiation the relative content of U236 was increased by isotope separa- tion. On the occasion of the irradiation of the samples containing U 236 in the reactor, apart from fission and the reaction U236 (n, r)U 237, which are of inter- est here, the following reactions were able to exercise influence on the Atomnaja Energija, .1, faso.5,130-131 (1956) CARD 2 / 2 PA - 1758 measured quantity of U 237: U238(n,2n)u 237; U238 (n'~')u 239 ~ lIP239 pu239. 239 239 The fission fragments of Pu and Np were separated after chemical purifi- cation of the samples which followed irradiation. After being chemically pur- ified, the samples probably contain only uranium isotopes. The half-life of the P-activity of sample No I is somewhat more than 6,63 days, which is appar- ently due to impurities with longer half-lives. For a section of 236 rad (cross the radiation capture ?) of U , the value of 26,4 + 6 barn was found in the case of the first sample. In the case of sample No 2 the half-life of P-activ- ity was about 6,63 days and 6 rad of U236 amounted to 24,6 $ 6 barn. Both values of 6rad are in good agreement within the limits of error. As, however, in the case of the first sample the quantity of U 236 was not immediately de- termined, and because a certain quantity of P-active admixtures existed (by which the result might be falsified), the authors looked upon the cross sec- tion computed for sample No 1 as only an approximate value. Therefore, the value drad ' 24,6 + 6 barn obtained in the case of the second sample was taken for the amount of the cross section of radiation capture. This value was also accepted at the Geneva Conference on the Peaceful Use of Atomic Energy; it agrees quite well with the value of 24 + 7 barn found by J.AUCLAIR et al, (lec- ture No 354, Geneva Conference)(1955). The circuit of the working electrodes consists of two flat anodes divided by a thin metallic plate. In order to obtain a narrow beam of electrons a thin metallic slotted diaphragm is installed in front of the cathode. The unit is connected with a standard bridge circuit. Card 1/4 'Depending on the working regime, either a zero or Investigation of a New Sensitive System of Electrodes for Mechanic- ally Controlled Electronic Tubes and their Use in Acceleration Data UnIts negative potential in relation to the cathode is fed to the divider and diaphragn. The sensitive system of a double beam triode was examinea on especially design- ed tubes with mechanically controlled electrodes, in which, with the help of levers, certain of the elec- trodes could be shifted in relation to the others and the 9pacing between electrodes modified, and the one or the other electrode could be put in or removed. The tests siiowed the following: 1) To increase the current sensitivity the anode-plane distance of the diaphragm must be reduced. L) Re6uction of the slot width decreases the current sensitivity little. 3) Increased voltage sensitivity can be achieved through reduction of the slot width..4) Slot width reduction can be achieved mechanically or by an increased negative potential of the diaphragm. 5) The anode-plane inter- electrode distance of the diaphragm does not affect the voltage sensitivity very much. For this purpose an electronic tri-component acceleration meter was prepared for measuring the spatial vector of acceleration of various objects within a range up to 100 cm/sec4r over a period of several seconds. This acceleration meter is a com- plex of' three accelerometric pick-ups mounted on a common base and each recoruing one of the 3 acceieration vector components. The electric wiring circuit of the acceleration measure consists of' three bridge circuits in parallel and fed by a common rectifier. Recorcing of the acceleration is done by loops VIII of MPO-02! oscillograph. To achieve maximum current sensitivity, the slot width was reduced to 3 mm and the anode- aperture distance to a minimum 0.;~-O.b mm. This transi- tion was chosen because it can be readily separated.from other tran Ca~d 1//3' ACCESSION NA: AP4009106 sitions. A crystal scintillation spectrometer was used to measure the relative -intensities of the,,y transitions to.j~g ground rota- tional band for 20 resonances in the Gdl55(n,,y)Gd reaction. At the measurement accuracy attained in these experiments, the reso- nance intensity distribution is compatible with a Porter-Thomas dis- tribution with one channel. The possibility remains, however, that there are two groups of such distributions with different mean in- tensities. The apparatus was based on coincidence circuitry and in addition to separating the 8.44-MeV -y' sit can also measure the rray background at other energies. it is reported that the apparatus is being improved and the measurement of the relative intensities of the 8.44 MeV transition will be continued. "The idea of this measurement was suggested to us by L. V. Groshev and A. M. Demidov to whoin we are grateful. We also thank M. 1. Pevzner for a truth- ful discussion of the results and V. A. Atomizdat, 1964; 69-13 5- TOPIC TAGS: scintillation counter) amplifying equipment, stabilization ABSTRACT: A procedure is described for stabilizing the amplification channel of a scintillation counter with the aid of a reference light pulse. The light-pulse source is a cold-cathode tbyratron (TKh4B), in which the light output is proportional to the current through the tbyratron. The stabilization is by comparing the current pulse from the output of a photomultiplier with the current pulne through the thyra- tron, with subsequent regulation of the gain of -the amplifier by means of the dif- ference error signal. A slightly modified standard amplifier (VIII-10) and an FEU-49 photomultiplier are used. Introduction of stabilization has improved the time stability of the system by -10 times (from 3-5% to 0.3-0.4%. as checked relative to the position of the CsI37 line). The complete schematic diagrams of the apparatus are given. V. Kharitonov. (USSR) 21, No. 10 (1948) For the investigation of the chemical composition of the hemicelluloses of pulp, the method of quantitative analysis of the products of their 5-stage hydrolysis is used. In the hydrolysis products, several sulbstances were found: glucose, mannose, galactose, xylose, arabino5e, niethyl-pentose and acids f rom which one could determine the presence of the hemicelluloses of the corresponding polysaccharides. Investigation shows that the glucanes entering ihto the composition of h-,-micelluloses have a varying stability on dissolving and hydrolyzing agents which points to the existence of various glucanes.
