ABSTRACT: Sapropel and clay sedimnts from Lake Nero were studied
to determine the mineral content. Quartz is the princi-
pal clastic mineral in the light fraction of sapropel,
0.25 mm to 0.05 mm, from a depth of 0.5 m. Its sub-
rounded and acutely angular fragments in places contain
needles of apatite and gas vacuoles. Vivianite is
concentrated in this fraction. It has marked pleo-
chroism (Ng, dark blue and Np, pole green), negF-tive
elongation, and perfect prismatic cleavage. Ng is

tain authigenic calcite, dolomite, pyrite with colloform structure,
and vivianite. Grains of green hornblende are among the most
significant of transparent elastic minerals. Some of the hornblende
is replaced by chlorite; other contains inclusions of small rounded
epidote grains. Large an-ular fragments of rose almandite, 301ne
containing blotite inclusions, are the most abundant garnet repre-
sentative. Limonite, which formed from other minerals, develops
shreddy fragments and small spherical pellets, pseudomorphous after
colloform pyrite. Study of the raineral content of the heavy fraction.,
0.25 mm to 0.05 mm, of sandy looms and the upper moraine showed a
higher quantity of garnet, disthene, and staurolite tht-n in the
sapropelitic deposits. Subrounded dark frPgments of staurolitue
contain dark opaque inclusions. The principal mineral of the light
fraction, 0.25 mm to 0.01 mm (sic), is quartz. plagioclase is
strongly decomposed. rAicrocline with grid twinning and the plagio-
close intergrowths is similar to the microcline and microcline
perthite of the sapropelitic deposits. With irrreaBo in the deg-ree-
of grinding of the mat9rial, the plagioclase content increases.

TITLE: Phase analysis of heat-treated BT3 (VT3) and BT3-1 (VT3-1) alloys.
SbURCE: Titan v promyshlennosti; sbornik statey. Ed. by S. G. Glazunov.
i Moscow, 1961, 121-130.
TEXT: The paper comprises a status report on an experimental investigation of
the phase composition of the VT3 and VT3-1 alloys of the Ti-Al-Cr-Mo system and
the effects thereon of heat treatment. Some of the source data are drawn from Blok,
N. I., et al., Zavodskaya laboratoriya, no. 2, 1958, 141, and pp. 11?- 120 of t~e
present compendium (Abstract S/762/61/000/000/010/029). At working tempera-
tures the VT3 alloy is found to be two-phase, with an a- (or W-) phase rnatrix.
During cooling of the alloy from high temperatures (HT), the HT P phase may
undergo one of three transformations: (1) During fast cooling the P phase trans-
forms into the metastable phase a' ; (Z) during fairly slow cooling the P phase trans-
forms into the metastable a' phase and some residual P phase; (3) veryslow cooling
leads to the eutectoid decomposition P-a + TiCr2. A residual P phase, enriched
with Cr, will also form, both during very slow cooling and in the process of aging.
In the latter, the alloying elements are redistributed between the a and the P phase.

P4ase analysis of heat-treated BT3 (VT3)... S/762/61/000/000i011/0?.9
An increase in the aging temperature of VT3 and VT3-1 alloys to 500-550*C
eiihances the enrichment of the residual P phase with alloying elements. The hard-
ness (H) and ductility (D) characteristics of these alloys can be greatly varied b')'
increases in the aging T after single quenching. The changes in H and D and in the
lattice parameters are graphed against T (at 500C intervals, up to 700-8000).
Greatest H and smallest D is obtained upon quenching and subsequent aging at 450-
5500. This is attributed to decomposition of the a' phase, separa#on of a dispers-
ive a phase, and - to some extent - the state of the P phase. Thus, the properties
of the two alloys after heat treatment are governed by the state, distribution. and
form of the particles of a, al, P, and TiCr? and the redistribution of the alloying
elements, and not by the formation of a metastable w phase erroneously postulated
by others. The tests comprised melts with differing contents of alloying elements,
prepared in vacuum arc furnaces with consumable electrodes, in which Tr- I (TG- 1)
Ti and a 56:50 Al-Cr ligature and a 60:20:15 Al-Cr-Mo ligature are fused. The
chemical melt composition is tabulated. Phase analysis after 8501 quench (a+p-
phase region) and 980-9900 quench (P-phase region) and 400-7000 aging was per-
formed by the powder method (3 full-page tabulations and graph). The total P-
phase content did not exceed 8.57o by weight, while the a (or al) content did not go
below 9076. A total P-phase quench was not achieved. The hydrogen content, which
could possibly have been responsible for brittleness, was within the bounds specified

by the Technical Specs. No Ti hydride was found. The geometric characteristics
of the various phases, including the laminar nature of the P phase, the acicular
form of the a' phase, the appearance of an overall basketlike structure, and the
segregation of a phase as a continuous edging at the grain boundaries are described
in detail. Desirable avenues for future research are outlined. There are 4 tables

TEXT: The authors endeavored to find whether carboborides based on
carbide phases of the type Me 23C6 can exist in steels. Two varieties
of carbide of the above type have been found in steels: Fe 21W 2C6
and Or 23C60 Therefore, two steels were investigated, each contain-
ing one of the Me 23C6types of carbide. The steel 30X2H2BA (30Kh2N
2VA) was used as the Fe 21W 2C6 containing material, in which this
compound forms independently, or together with the carbice.Me3C~
Steel 3M268 (E1268) was used as a representative steel coniaining a
carbide based on Cr 23C6o The steels were melted in a high f-equency

such a manner that each ingot should have a definite boron content.
The ingots were forged into rods, which were oil-quenched from 1100
00. They were then tempered at 6000 and 7000C for 30 minutes, I.-
109 100 and 300 hours. For the separation of the anode deposit f.-OM
specimens of steel 30Kh2N2VA, electrolytic dissolution for 5 hours
in an ice.-cold solution consisting of 75 g11 KC1 4 5 g1l citric
acid was used at a low current density (0.02 A/dm2),, The precipita-
tes obtained were analyzed chemically for Pe, Cr and 'W~ For the
estimation of B9 an anodic deposit was again produced, It was via-
shed with water by decantation, transferred into a conical flask
and decomposed with a little H 2so4 (1 : 2) with addition of a few
drops of H2 020 After dissolving the depositg the solution was bo--
led until the H 202 was completely decomposed~ Small quantities of B
were determined calorimetricallyg and larger quantities (_~:- 0.1 %)
volumetrically. In order to separate the anode deposit from the Cr-
Ni steel E1268, anodic dissolution was used In a solution contain-

current density of OaO2 A/cm for 4 hours. An X-ray investigation
was carried out, using the powder method, in Co, Fe and CuKa radia-
tion. It was found that B added to steel 30Kh2N2VA, decreases the
solid solubility of Cr and V1, and in steel B1268 the solid sclubili-
ty of Cr. In boron-free 30Kh2N2VA steel, the carbides (Fe, Cr) 3 C'
(Cr, Pe)7 C3 and Fe 21(w, Cr)2C6 form, according to temperatures and
duration of tempering. According to the boron content and tempeA7ing
conditions, the carbo-boride phases (Fe, Cr) 3(C, B), Fe 21(WI C)2
(Cp B)6 and the carbide phase Pe21(W' Cr) 2C6 form. An E1268 steel
containing 0.1 - 0.2 % B, contains a carboboride phase of variable
composition, (Crq Fe) 2 (Bq C) having a rhombic crystal structured

ABSTRACT: The authors point out that the TI alloys VT-14 and VT-14-) are charac-
terized by large amounts of stable and metastable j3 phases, and that rapid quench-
I ng of VT- 14 1 eads to the - format I on of the ma r tens I t I c. a' phase wh I I e VT- 14-1 (con-
'taining more Mo and V) forms d' or a' and 13 phases depending on the cooling rate.
fThe present paper Is devoted tp an X-ray analysis of the phase transformations In
these two Ti alloys, and to a study of their effect on the mechanical properties
of the alloy. The effect of quenching from various temperatures on the mechanical
!properties of VT-14 Is shown In Fig. I of the Enclosure, indicating that the
trength increases with Increasing quenching temperature while the yield point:

passes through a minimum. While Investigating the reason for this decrease in
yield point, the authors found that the lattice parameter of the p-phase increa!,es
with quenching temperature In monolithic samples, but Is constant In the j3-phasia
isolated from VT-14 alloys. They therefore conclude that the decrease In yield
point of quenched Ti alloys Is due to an Increase In the amount and stability or
the P-phase, which,is destroyed during plastic deformation. The authors go on to
investigate the effect of destruction of the metastable 13- and oll-phases on the
phase composition and properties of an a + 13 Ti alloy, demonstrating that the pro-':
portions of the a-, a'-, cel-
, 0- andIC-phases in the final alloy depend on the
heating temperature and cooling rate. As the heating temperature and cooling rate;
are increased, the structural metastability of the alloy Increases, resulting In
turn-In a lower yield point and the formation of a metastable 0 phase which decom-:
poses to the c1l phase and even the a(al) + 13 phase during subsequent aging. At
almost all temperatures, isothermal aging results In a lowered yield point and In-;,
creased plasticity. Finally, the authors discuss the reversibility of this trans-!'
formation 03 -> dl) and the metastable transformations taking place In TI alloys
during plastic deformation (cold rolling); the latter process seems to Induce
transformation of 13 into a' and then Ul after quenching from 750C, but the reverse.
(at least for a deformation of no more than 5%) after quenching from 850C; 20% de-
formation after quenching from 850C again results In 13 --.> c?l transformation. The.

errects or depsipeptides related to valinomjcin, the authors synthesized a series'
of its linear and cyclic analogs, differing in chain length or size of ring, as
well as in the nature and configuration of the hydroxy and amino acid residues,
The optically active linear depsipeptidos were synthesized by a method developed
oar]-ior by the authors for the total synthesis of valinomycin) consisting of
gradual construction of the depsipeptide chain by the creation first of esters,
then of audde bonds. The activity of the depsipoptides wao found to depend upon
,the presence and size of the ring, as well as on the nature and configuration
of the amino and hydrwW acid residues, All of the investigated cyclotetra- and I
cycloootadepsipeptides had no aotivity at all, whereas many cyclododocadepsi-
peptides posseoced,substantial.activity*,-th-o-_aoti,~ity_apain disapDoared for

cyclohexa~ecadepsipaptides. The struci~reor the radicals and configuration
of the amino acid residues in the valinonVcj-n molecule could be varied sub-
tantial3y (on a lixited portion of the chain) without any significant loss of
:activity, However, a change in the structure of the radical or configuration
of the hydroxy acid residues usually led to an almost total destruction of the
aijtim~crobial activity.- It was concluded that the antibiotidcnctivity of
depsipeptides is evidently associated with their iit-eraction ~rith the lipoproteino

A simple magnetrometiic equipment is described for studying the dis-
integration process of austenite and allowing one to plot the initial and ter-
minal curves of d:Ls:Lnte gration with 2 to 3% accuracy. Two zones of high sta-
bility of austenite-were found at about 450 and 600o , and two zones of low stability
at about 400 and 5000. The type of disintegration curves did not depend on frequency.

ABSTRACT: The process of rieparation of Cu, Cd, Pb, and Bi IMPUritio!s
from Zn is based on the fact that diethyidithiophosphate acid.
(C2H50)2PSSH (I), causes these elements to form precipitates
which are poorly solttble in water, but readily soluble in non-
polar solvents. Cu, C1, and Pb precipitates are fortned in
acidic, as well as in neutral and alkaline Solution-, and are Nvith-
drawn v)ith ether, the acidity of the medium remaining the same.
Ca r~l 1/3 Bi forms a complex compound which is insoluble in water and

which passes into the ether layer only in acidic media with a pH no greater
than 3.2. Salts of Fe and Zn do not precipitate out under these conditions,
and ions c-f these elements do not appear in the ether extract. In the course
of analysis, a 50-cc portion of a 10% Zn solution, containing 0.002% each of
Cu, Pb, Gd, Bi, and Fe, is diluted with 50 cc of 2-N HCI. 50 cc of the mix-
ture obtained are treated with 25 cc of 0.053-N I and are then twice extracted
with ether. The ether contained in the extract is driven Off; after trcatin3 the
residue with I cc of HN03 and evaporating it almost to dryness, HCt is added
and the evaporation procedure is repeated. After dissolving the residue in a
mixture of 3-5 drops of concentrated HC1 and 5 cc of water, the solution is
placed into a 25-cc flask to which 10 cc of a 44/'o sodium tartrate solution are
added together with I cc of CH3COOH (1:2) and 10 drops of a 0.2116 solution of
methyl red; the level is raised to a predetermined mark by means of adding
water, 02 is removed by a stream of H2, and the Cu, Cd, Pb, and Bi are
polarographed. The process of determination is accomplished by the method
of increments, the error being equal to 1.6-4.9%. It is established that in the
presence of Ge As can be completely precipitated by the action of 1. 1 is
added to a solution in which the Ge-As ratio is 1/500 and the concentration is
3 N in terms of HCI, in an amount which is approximately three times greater
than the As content. After filtering out the As precipitate and washing it in

ABSTRACT: The behavior of trace quaniitles of lead and copper was studied an sta-
tionary mercury electrodes with gold, silver, and platinum contacts. Experimental
data showed that in the combined determination of both metals, the best results am
obtained with a silver contact. Another important advantage of this contact is
that it is less likely to form intermetallic compounds with elements such as cad-
mium, gallium, zinc, etc. Use of a mercury electrode with a silver contact made it
possible to increase the sensitivity of the determination of lead and copper c~:)n-

siderably. It was found that Gurface-active agents affect the determination of
lead, but have almost no effect on that of copper; a method is proposed for pivpar-
ing a supporting electrolyte which permits one to obtain reproducible results. The
dependence of the peak height of lead on the temperature, accumulation time, and
potential of preelectrolysis during the preparation of the background electrolyte
solution was determined. It is shown that lead in amounts on the order of 1.6,10
and copper in amounts of about 1.4*10-5% (coefficient of variation 27 and 7% rq-
spectively) can be determined in high-purity NaCl in a background electrolyte -.on-
