TEXT: The author gives a report on studies carried o..it under his leader-
ship in the.laboratoriya promyshlennoy teplofiziki Fiziko-tekhnicheskogo
instituta Akademii nauk BSSR (Laboratory of Industrial Heat Physics of the
Physicotechnical Institute of the Academ~ of Sciences, BSSR) and the
kafedra teoreticheskikh oanov teplotekhniki Belorusakogo politekhniches-
kogo instituta (Division of tho Theoretical Bases of Thermal Engineering
of the -4alorussian Polytechnic Institute). These studies cover the
thermodynamics of reversible and irreversible processes and transfer pro-
ceases. They are based on generalized representations of the equations
of state. This "generalized thermodynamics" is especially suitable for
studying transfer effects. On the basis of an analysis of the thermoelec-
trical effect a generalized theory of "thermodynamic" pairs was developed.
Such pairs may exist of e.g. two porous bodies of different humidity

metal hardening a new, simple and highly effective method of continuoun
tube production is proposed.

TEXT: Yhe problem of the melting of bodies under the effect-of the envi-
ronment is of great theoretical and practical interest. These problems are of
paramourt importance in the launching of artificial earth satellites and inter-
planetary.roakets, and also for the calculation and cons *tru7ction of melting
furnaces and other installations. In the first case, the problem has to be solved
taking into account the process of heat propagation in the surface layer of the
body and the hydrodynamic characteristics of high-velocity gas flow, In the see-
ond case, hydrodynamic equations are not applicable since the effect of the envi-
ronment on the body can be evaluated with the aid,of heat transfer coefficientoe"
In the present article the given problem is solved by the appioximation method
of exclusion of variables. A sufficiently accurate solution of the problem.of the

second case can be found with the aid of this method. The same, method can be
applied to intrbduce into the problem well-known simplifications applicable to
the first case, It is assumed that the temperature distribution in the cross
section of the solid part of the body corresponds approximately to a parabolic
equation of the nth order.
