valid. 3q (1.6) is then derived for the rate of change
of drop surface with time. When the drop is not in
motion this expression simplifies to the form of
Sreznevskiyts law. It is then shown that when a drop is
in motion in a flow the conditions change during the
process of evaporation, so that Sreznevskiy's law cannot
be fulfilled. Fig 1 shows typical experimental curves
for the evaporation of free droplets of ethyl other in a
flow of air at various temperatures. The numbers.marked
on the curves correspond to values of the Reynolds
criterion at the corresponding times. It will be seen
that, the law of linear change of drop surface with time
is not true throughout the process at any temperature.
Nevertheless, each of the curves contains a straight line
portion wherein the law is valid. Test results were also
obtained for water and ethonol, giving curves similar to
those of Fig 1. Similar curves were also obtained for
heavy oils such as diesel fuel grade ES, but in the case

of light fuels such as gasolene and kerosene under
certain circumstances changes in the droplet composition
during the process of evaporation caused the curves to
be somewhat different in shape. The equation of mass
exchange of a drop with the surrounding medium is then
expressed in criterial formf as in Eq (2.1), and Fig 2
gives test results for uniform fluids expressed in the
appropriate coordinates. The evaporation rate constant
is then defined; it applies to that part of the curve
which follows Sreznevskiyls law. In studying the droplet
evaporation it is Important to know the temperature of the
droplets, which in the case of evaporation of uniform
fluids may be determined by Maxwell's formula ()+.l))
provided the temperature of the medium is not too high.
In the present work the droplet temperature was calculated

TEXT: The object of the investigation is determination of the dependence of the heat transfer coefficient on
the gas parameters. permitting a generalized equation for the instantaneous heat losses into the cooling medium.
Taking into account the relationship between heat lows by radiation and by contact, special attention was
given to the coefficient of contact heat transfer by analysis of indicator diagrams, the coemcient of heat
transfer by radiation was determined analytically (according to data from literature) on the basis of the
degree of blackness or steel and glass and of the radiation coefficient. of a black body. The main components
of the equipment were: a cylindrical bomb equipped with glass side plate%, and a HAS451 (IAB451)
apparatus with a CKC-1 (SKS-1) movie camera for filming the combustion inside the bomb by the method
of optical contrast. For carburettor engines the beat transrer can be calculated with the aid of the mean
temperatures determined from an indicator diagram and taking into account the overall beat transrer surface,

ABSTRACT% This report on an experimental investigation is a continuation and
extension of N. N. Zagryazkinls and R. P. Eygeles' proposal for the measurement
of high local tomperaturegr by means of the observation of the heating rate under-
gone by thermocouples ("A nonstationary method for the measurement of elevated

advantage of this method to the usability in it of non-heat- resistant thermocouples.'
The principle of the nonstationary method consists in the measurement of elevated
temperatures (T) by the introduction of the thermometric body Into the medium to
be measured for a short time, and its withdrawal before its T has attained the:T

of the fluid flow. The curve of the increase in T is recorded by means of a loo
oacillograph. The basic theory of the method and a schematic diagram of the
equipment employed are set forth. Simplifying assumpt4ons: 1. The T of the fluid
flow is time -invariable; Z. the heat capacity of the thermometric transducer (TT)
is constant through the T interval measured; 3. the heat-transfer from fluid to the
TT is constants, 4. the T of the TT at a given time point to uniform; 5, radiational
and conductive heat losses are disregarded. The method of interpretation of the*
oncillograrn Is explained,,and an error analysis is carried out In detail. The in-
fluence of the diameter of the TT and of the flow velocity iire analyzed.
Conclusions: L, The method proposed is recommended for the measurement of
elevated gas T (1,000-3,OOOOC). 2. The accuracy of the measurement of T in the
1,000-2,0000 range is *7 to 9 percent. The accuracy of T measurement de- ;
creases with further fncr~ases in T. 3. The diameter of the TT must be smaller
than 0.33 mm. 4. The parameters of the interpretation of tfie oscillograms, T,
and T , niust be'selected with reference to the characterlsti6 of the medium
investigated. Thus for fluid media with a temperature up to 2,000Q it is desirable
to assume T, = 150 to ZOOO; for higher T of the fluid medium T, may be assumed
