Byulleten', no* 34, 1963, 8-13 TOPIC TAGS: geophysics, meteorology, geophysical prediction, geophysical cycle, air temperature, weather forecasting ABST11ACT: Attempts to use the cyclic character of geophysical phenomena for forecasts have failed in the past, but a successful method has been developed to*exploit this pattern. Long-term weather observations and forecasts and an analysis of the 11-year cycle at Odessa reveal that the 27-day cycle is reason- ably stable and can be used to a certain extent in weather forecasting. The forecast illustrated is limited to a qualitative prediction of whether days following particular days will be warmer or cooler. The initial step was to tabulate the actual temperatures at a fixed time of day (mean daily values can be used) for 2 to 4 27-day eyclea. It was found that three-day periods of cool- in,y and warming alternate. rh Fig. 1 of Enclosure the days are arranged in Card ACCESSION N11: AT4016596 27-day groups, one day per block. Three-day (and two-day) periocb of coolinvare denoted by dots; more well-expressed cooling is indicated-by squares. Obviously, for the established days of cooling and heating the algebraic sum of temperatures of the "cold" days is lose than this sum for "warm" days, that is, for each cycle: k T. I T,. 111here T. is the temperature on "cold.11 days, TT is the temperature on "ward' days, * is the index of summing from I to 6 (since there are six columns of cold days)v * is the index of summing from unity to k, where k - 1, 2, 3 is the number of days in the column, and y is the index of summing of the "ward' columns (5). One "cold" column is discarded so that there will be 13 days in both the "cold" and "warm" columns. Prolonged observation of the 27-day cycles revealed that such three-day (two-day) coolings and warmings regularly alternate, so relation (1) is satisfied in subsequent 27-day cycles. The cooling and warming columns therefore are stable and it is possible to calculate which groups of days in the. future will be in the "cooling" column and which will be in the "warming" column. An example of application of the method is given. With increasing time from the initial forecast the quality of the forecast deteriorates - "cooling" columns somet.im a become "warmin For the most part the stability of the Card 0/f, g" columns. ACCESSION NIL: AT4016596 27-day cycle is maintained. The stability coefficient is K - 7 64% 11 for the 11-year cycle. The columns therefore need to be compiled every two or three years, preferably every year. Various aspects of the method are discussed in detail. Orig. art. has: 2 formulas, 2 figures and 2 tables. In ex- tinction of CR, strong excitement appeared, which was replaced by the inhibition of, first, spatially- proximal and then of the more remote cortical sta- tions. The functional connection of the movements of head and hands turned out to be the tightest. Card 1/2 go t 4693h-66. The obtained characteristics indicate that the families of the lux-ampere relationships at various IR exposures for intrinsic and extrinsic photocurrents coincide precisely, until there is a shift along the axis of intensities. This shift is caused by the difference be- tween the CdS absorption coefficients in these two bands of the spectrum. The coinci- dence indicates that electron concentrations In the conductivity zone and in the r-cen. ters and in the 8-centers are not affected by the mode of the generation of the photo- current, I. e., whether or not the photocurTent is generated by light which results in band-band electron transitions, or whether the transitions take place from impurity Card I T, ),6931,-66 ACC NR: AP6015496-'---- centers. This can happen only if the transitions take place from the r-centers. The photon-capture cross section 0r was measured for the electron transition from an impu- rity center to the conductivity band using two different methods, i. e., with and with- out a consideration of the identities of the r-centers and of the centers of extrinsic photosensitivity. Since similar values of 0 were obtained, it follows that in US the centers of extrinsic photoconductivity coincide with the r-centers. The authors thank V. E. Lashkarev for direction of this project. The work of Pavlov on the physiology of gastric secretion showed that the activity of the gastric glands is. Z phasic and can be divided into three stages: (1) the: nervous reflex stage worked out by Pavlov in exp--riments on sham-feeding; (2) the chemico-humoral, regarded by Edkins; as due to the hormone gastrin elaborated by the pyloric mucosa: (3) the stage in which the stimulus is due to chernical substances in the food after digestion in the small intestine. The auihor demonstrates that all thesc stiinuli in turn take their part in the production of gastric juice. He has investigated gastric secretion in patients subjected to cx-sophago-jejunostomy for stenosis of the ocsophagLts, due to swallowing caustic fluids. This operation was performed in two stages. In the first, the proximal part of the jejurium was brought up under the skin to the anterior aspect or the neck, where a fistulous opening was made, and the duodenum united to the jejunurn by an end-to-side anastomosis. At the second stage, the upper end or the jejunum was anastomosed to the proximal part of the oesophagus. In all these cases a gastric fistula already existed, through which the patient had been fed, and from which after the first stage of the operation had been completed a pure specimen of gastric juice could be obtained at will. Thus the first stage of gastric secretion could be studied by sham-feeding the 7 9"? C* X A' WX patient in the usual way, the second, by introducing food into the gastric fistula direct: and the third, by feeding the patient, after the first stage of the operation. through his jejunal fistLi1a. The first and third stages could be studied by feeding the patient by mouth after the completion of' the - plastic oesophagus - before closure of* h, s gasirl c fistula. the second stage b-Ling eliminated bLCaUSe 17bod passed from mouth direct to small intestine. IThe author does not mention whether the stomach was resected in this final mage of' the operation.] He found that the reflex secretion varied considerably with the palatability of the food. and could be excited by the sight of food being eaten by others. It could be suppressed by pain (for example. %%hen a specimen of' blood was -.0thdrawn intravenously just after it meal) or by food very distasteful to the patient. It %vas complete in 00 to 75 minutes. The chemical phase begins about I hour after a incal. Meat soup calls forth a greater secretion than doc.-i milk or fat, but bread is nearly as go,od a StiMUlator as meat. This phase is inhibited by %agotomy. The third or humoral phase arises still later (2 hours). It is independent of the integrity of the vagus and of psychic influences, and is more freely provoked by meat than by carbohydrate or fatty food. L. Elektromekhanika i avtomatika, 1958, Nr 2p pp 85 - 93 (USSR) ABSTRACT: The fundamentals of construction of integrators that are based on hydraulic analogies and offer the possibility of investigating unsteady processes are described. The hydro- integrators are subdivided into two main g-eoups: devices working on the principle of finite differences (lattice- hydrointagrators) and those that are based on the use of traversing agents (slot-hydrointegrators). The fundamental scheme of the slot-hydrointegr~ators consists of two vertically erected and closely situated smooth plates. The narrow slot between the plates is pansed by a laminar flow of liquid (Ref 2). The basis of lattice-hydrointegrators is formed by the differential equation of the Fourier-type (Furlye) ex- Card 1/3 pressed by finite diff-erences. The method of finite differ- Slot-Hydrointegrators SOV/161-53-2-11/30 ences, in both electrointegratorn and hydrointegrators, leads to errors and the accuracy of the solutions of the problems, therefore, is much lower for lattice models than for models made by means of a slot-hydrointegrator. The imperfections of the lattice-hydrointegrators are indicated. The description of a slot-hydrointegrator is given. As working fluid a I'vinypol" solution (vinyl-butyl-ester) in medical Vaseline oil of 1/3 I'vinypol" and 2/3 oil was used. At room temperature the "vinypol" has a viscosity of about 100 stokes. The device costs 9000 roubles and its area is that of a medium-sized writing table. Neither both types of hydrointegrators nor the electrointegrator permit a solution of three-dimensional problems under unsteady conditions to be obtained. For this reason, a space slot hydrointegrator was developed. This device is theoretically based on the Fourier equation ex- pressing two terms only, on the x- and z-axis, in finite differences whilat the third term and the derivative with respect to time remain in the usual form. The construction of the device is prism-shaped. It is assumed that the inves- tigated range of volume wherein the heat-transfer takes place Card 2/3 is subdivided into a number of series of vertically arranged Slot-Hydrointegrators sov/161-58-2-11/30 prisms of a square base. The space slot hydrointegrator re- quires a space of 7 M2 and its cost amounts to about 32000 roubles. The tests on the models of single assemblie3 gave good results. TITLE: Interstice Hydrointegrators PERIODICAL: Inzhenemo-fizicheskiy zhurnal, 1959, Nr 2. pp 72-78 (USSR) ABSTRACT: Hydrointegrators are divided into two main groupst network and interstice hydrointegrators. The present paper describes the design and mode of operation of the second type which, in the wtbwls opinion,, is simpler and jcheaper than the network hydrointegrators. The Interstice hydrointegrator, ~piotures in Figure 1),9consists of two smooth vertical plates separated by a narrow Interstioe'through which a laminar flow of liquid'runs. This device is 'based on using the analogy between the movement of a viscous liquid in a narrow interstice and a heat flow in some media, because bnth of them are described by the Laplace two-dimensional equation, With this device, it is also possible to simulate plane non-stationary thermal processes of heat transfer in stratified media. The solution of "vinip--l" (vinyl-butyl ester) in medical vaseline oil in a ratio of 1/3 to 2/3 is used as an operatirg liquid having a viscosity of 100 stokes at room temperature. Introducing a dye Into the liquid, the direction of the lines Card 1/2 of liquid flows, simulatipg a thermal flux, is observed and photographed. Interstice Hydrointegrators 06-391 SOV/170-59-Z-9/P-3 Thecost of tbis derTios is about 9,000 rubles. In order to solve three- dimensional problems with varying in time conditions, a space interstice hydrointegrator has a-so been designed. It consists of a system of prisms, shown schematically in Figura 4. It occupies 7 m2 of area and costs about 32,000 rubles. There are, 2 photos, 2 diagrarns and 1 Soviet reference. The ion spectrum of the atmosphere depends on a large number of factors, e.g. amount of convection, quantity of dust present etc. Hence, to separate out the effects of the different variables, it is best to use the simplest meteorological conditions possible, such, for example, as exist during a stable anti-cyclone. Methods previously described (Ref.2 and 3) were used to determine simultaneously the distribution spectra for both positive and negative ions using an aircraft flying at various heights. Pressure, temperature etc were recorded at the some time, In considering the results, only completely cloudless days during the anti-cyclone were taken. Curves are reproduced showing Card 1/3
