TITLE: Investigation of the Dynamics of Kukeraite-Oil Shale Heating with
One-Sided Heat Supply (Izuoheniye dinamiki nagreva slantea-
kukeraita pri odnostoronnem podvode tepla)
The practical application of the results obtained is possible
for the case of studying heat. emission in an oil ahale layer
subjected to underground gasification.
The characteristics of the temperature field are considered for
two thermal regimes: the unsettled and stationary regimes.
The article contains 8 graphs and I table, as well as 9 refer-
ences, all Slavic.

ABSTRACT: In Kirchhoff's theory of diffraction, both scalar and electromagnetic,
the splitting of his wave motion into a goonstatic-optical wave and a boundary-
diffraction wave is poosible according to Young's interpretation of diffraction
phenomena. The Kirchhoff-Young solutions in the electromagnetic theory for
an incident wave radiated by an electric dipole were given by Kottlor "n later,
in a different way, by Laporte and Maixner. 7he paper shows that the modifiad
Lorentz theorem and, by implication, the reciprocity theorems, load to the
Huygens,electromagnotio principlo expressed in the Lorentz-Larmor formulas

derived from the unmodified theorem. It proves that the two Laport-MoLmer
solutions conceived by their authors as quite different are equivalent not only
to one another, but also to Kottlerls solutions. The Kirchhoff electromagnatio

not so a certain class of Laporte-Meimier solutions,

ABSTRACT: In addition to a brief description of the historical background and the
basic concept of the Czechoslovakian Academy of Sciences, the latter being similar
to the Science Academies of other Socialist countries, the review dwells in
particular upon the new organization and areas of activities of this scientific
body. The Academy consists of 209 native members and 29 foreign members. Beat
represented are mathematical. physical and chemical sciences (60 members),
followed by humanistic sciences (56 sembers). The central governing organ is the
presidium, elected *very 4 years by the general assembly. Its members must have
government approval. The newest development in the organization of the Academy
is the substitution of 9l4# lorp divisions of related disciplines by 23 scientific
colleges, each of which ancomp"ses only small specialized fields of science. Each
college consists of 15 to 18 members, including representatives of universities,
technological institutea, and industries, in addition to the members of the Academy.

ABSTRACT: The activity of this department includes field- and
model-testing and observations of hydraulic struc-
tures, geotechnical research - especially testing
of rocks, and studies of some special experimental
hydraulic structures, during the period 1950 - 1958.
Field observation and inspection of dams included
Jablanica arch-gravity dam, Jajce II gravity dam
and Lipkovo arch dam near Kumanovo. Preparations
are being made for observation of the Idbar ex-
perimental arch dam, now under construction. Studies

sure have been carried out in the conduit tunnels
of the Mavrovo Hydropower Complex, and in the con-
duit tunnel of the Lipkovo irrigation system near
Kumanovo. These tunnels were examined by partition-
ing them into sections with wooden shields. One
at a time the sections are filled with water and
compressed to a certain pressure. The amount of
water which must be added to maintain pressure over
a fixed period indicates the water permeability of
the section. This method is also used successfully
in France. Stresses in tunnel-lining are studied
by measuring deformations. The stresses in the
concrete-encased penstocks at the Jablanica and
Jajce I hydropower plants and in the unencased pen-
stock at the Vrutok hydropower plant were also ex-
amined by measuring deformations. Study of the
mechanical characteristic of rocks in situ is also
undertaken by this department. The method of meas-

metal drum encased in concrete into a fissure in the
rock to be tested was developed in this department
and successfully used at the Vinodol, Peru6a, Split,
Senj, Bajina Bagta, Mavrovo., Tikves", Globo6ica, Ra-
ven, Rama, Jajee I, Zaton, Bistrica, Buk Bijela, Ta-
ra-Mora6a and Komarnica power plants. A similar
method, using two sheet-metal drums propped apart
by timber, was applied at the site of the Buk Bije-
la dam. In the conduit tunnels of the Jablanica
and Gojak hydropower plants the modulus of rock
elasticity was determined by the test chamber me-
thod, i.e. by measuring deformations in a section of
the tunnel, partitioned off and filled with water
under a given pressure. In the conduit tunnel of
the Vrutok hydropower plant the modulus of rock
elasticity was measured by a radial press. The de-
partment also developed and produced a sounding
dilatometer, consisting of a hollow rubber.cylinder
filled with water, which can be lowered into a pro-

The deformation of the rock is measured by a device
in the cylinder supplied with remote data indicator.
The first measurements with the sounding dilatometer
were made at the site of BaJina Ba9ta dam. Shearing
tests in situ have been carried out at the site of
the Buk Bijela, Bajina Ba9ta and Tara-Morac"a dams,
at the site of penstock anchor-blocks at the Peru-
cica hydropower plant and in the conduit tunnel of
the Raven hydropower plant. Similar tests have
been carried out at the site of Bajina Ba9ta, Buk
Bijela, Modrac and Rastovae'a dams, but for testing
a concrete-rock joint. The laboratory research in-
cluded examination of a model of,an elasto-static
arch dam, analysis of Idbat and Citluk dams (a
model of the Neretvica dam is in preparation), and
photoelastic studies of some structures. As ex-
perimental structures this department used 4 debris
arch dams in the catchment area of the Jablanica
Card 4/5 storage lake, i.e.: Idbar, Bijela, Neretvica and

Seonica dams. The Idbar dam which will be soon com-
pleted is 38 m high, 99 m long at the crest and has
an average thickness of 1.77 m. Electroacoustic
tensiometers, for stress observations under various
loads, are built in. The department is also working
on other problems: the effect of earthquakes on
dams, the buckling of thin arches, water-tunnel lin-
ing in the form of square segments, bearing capa-
city of inclined piles and a group of piles, ani-
sotopy of rocks, model studies of structures by
using brittle lacquers, application of geology in
geomechanical research, prestressed concrete irri-
gation pipes, etc. Fourteen engineers and a large
number of technicians and laboratory workers are
employed in this department. There are 9 photos
