The Czech Betatron

The author reports on the first Czech betatron - a
cyclic accelerator for electrons, shown at the World
Exhibition in Brussels. The betatron is calculated
for 15 million electronovolts (15 MEV) and is intended
for industrial flaw detection especially for radio-
graphic exgmination of thick sections of steel, Many
scientific~workers, headed by Doctor 9. Seydel and
engineers K. Rytina and I. Mazur* took part in the in-
stallation of the betatron which was completed in 1957.
The electrons rotate in a ring-shaped glass vacuum chamber
(toroid) under the impact of a time-varying magnetic
field. The toroidally-shaped glass chamber is located

The Czech Betatron
between the fields of an electromagnet. The latest
construction makes it possible to derive from the be-
tatron not only ga-ma-rays but also a beam of accelera-
ted electrons, which is especially convenient for medi-
cal and scientific purposes. The acceleration of in-
Jected electrons is accomplished within one two-hundredth
of a second, In order that the electrons may acquire
energy of 15 IM within this period of time, they must
complete 19600,000 revolutions and cover more than
1,000 km. *This process is repeated 50 times per se-
cond. The most important part of the betatron is the
magnetic circuit with an excitation winding. The beta-
tron is equipped with a series of electronic devices
necessary for both the operation and work control,The
first experiments have shown that it is possible to
radiograph 35-40 cm thick steel with the aid of the be-
tatron. A great advantage is its exclusively good.fo-
cusing; practically it gives a point radiation source#

Abstract I
for reducing tho antibacterial aqtion of ostruthin by mercapto compounds.,
vitamin K, and K3-An addition of some of the comoound3 to liquid nutrient
media did not interfere with the inhibition of gro-/Oh of Staphyloccus
aurous caused by ostruthin. Mixtures of ostruthin and morcapto compounds
wore used to test their effect on other strains by means of the Word
method.The effect was the same as caused by ostruthin alone. It bas been
found that no roaction. occures between the -SH group and the unsaturated
lactono part of ostruthin molecules. Discussed is the problem whather
ostruthin antibacterial effect consists :in the blockade of the -SH groups
or not. The antibacterial effect of ostruthin may be reduced by vitanaia
K No such effect was found in vitamin X3. Twenty-five references, in-

Lengthening of the amputation stump of the right arm by 16cm. was performed by
means of a podicie nap from the hy gastrium and subsequent implantation of an
autogenous bons graft from the fibura. The high biological value of the fibular t
autolransplant. which has not undergone any visible changes in almost 2 yr. after
implantation. In emphasized. Lengthening the extremely short stump enabled the i 11
patient to us# a movablo prosthesis. allowing her to perform domestic tasks. I
