Abstract: The reactions of free radicals (forming in the result of dissociation of alkylpenyltriazenes and of dinitryl of azlisobutyric acid) with natural rubber, synthetic polyi3oprene and al- vinyl polymer were studied in a wide range of concentrations. The reactions of these polymers Card 1/3 USSR/Chemistry of High Molecular Substances. F Abs Jour: Ref Zhur - Khimiya, 110. 8f 1957, 27o64. with S2 C1 2 were studied also. The polymer destruction takes place In all cases? 'the de- composition of the polymer chains occurs without any order, and the probability of a rupture at any monomer link of the polymer is the same. It Is established that Intramolecular vulcani- zation does not take place at the action of free radicals an polymtrs under the conditions under which th~! reactions have brt-n carried out. In the opinion of the author~-R 0 destruction proceeds in two stages: I/ teari!i '- an H-atom away from the polymer with the formation of the polymer radical and 21 dim!tociation of the poly- mer radical with the formation of the diene group- ation on the and of the ch&in and of the allyl radical., The authors arrive at thA conclusion Card 2/3 BOLDYWA, I.I.; DOLGOPLOSK. Kauchuk I Rezina, 1959, No. 7, pp. 6-7 TEXT; The authors show that a polymer containing as much as 97% links of the trans-1.4-type polymers, can be obtained in the catalytic polymerization of Isoprene using triethylaluminum and titanium trichlorlde. It is also shown that this polymer Is identical to the at-form of natural gutta percha, as far as its elementary lattice parameters and its oryst&llizability are concerned. Accord- ing to the authors, this was already accomplished in 1956 by 0. Natta and co- workers, as stated in Ref. 1. The present article reveals the experimental results on the polymerization of Isoprene with titanium trichlorlde and triethyl aluminum, the latter acting as catalysts. These experiments are the continuation of work published previously by I. I. Boldyreva and coworkers, and B. D. Babit.skiy and coworkers, Ref. 3, and 4. The relacement of the titanium tetrachloride with the trichloride, yields the trans-l.~-configuratlon instead of the Cla,1.4, as obtained In Hof. 3. The motho for obtaining titanium tr1chlorido Is described briefly. The triethylaluminumlis a ready product produced by the NIIPP (Scientific Card 1/2 On the Synthesis of Trans-1.4-Polyisoprene S/138/59/000/07/02/009 Research Institute of Polymerized Plastics). The experimental procedure has already been outlined In Ref. 3. Table I gives the results of the experiments under various conditions. It Is seen that the y1elg of the polymer depends a great deal on the temperature, and that even at 100 C, the yield does not exceed 15 to 20%. This is explained as most likely being due to the low solubility of the polymer. The presence of the solvent and its nature has little effect on the process and on the structure of the formed polymer. Table 2 gives the results -of the obtained samples, as to their structure and properties. Data of natural gutta percha are submitted for comparison. The somewhat lower stability of the synthetic polylsoprene Is explained by the different molecular-weight distribution of the polymers, and also by the possible presence of certain deviation$ In 'the structure. TITLE: Averaging Coals for Cokimg (Usredneniye ugley dlya koksovaniya) PERIODICAL: Koks i Khimiyap 1957t Nr 91 PP-18-22 (USSR) ABSTRACT: This is a criticism of the paper by P.A.Baydalinov pub- lished in "Koks i Khimiya"t 1957, Wr 2. - Baydalinov's view that coals during their passage from mines through coal beneficiation plants and blending plants on coke ovens are sufficiently mixed.to secure uniformity of the composition of the blend, is strongly opposed. The arguments are supported by data on the variability of coal blends depend- ing on the-number of blending bunkers in operation and on the passage of coal from mines directly into bunkers or through the stock 7ard (Tables 1 and 21 and Figs-1-3). It is concluded that coal beneficiation plants can supply well mixed coalsp but cannot maintain an average composition on a required level for a loxg period of time. In order to maintain a uniform composition of coals which can secure a standardised quality of coal blends an appropriately fitted stock yard is necessaz7~. There are 2 tables and 4 figures. Prikladnaya matematika i makhanika,v. 30, no. 6, 1966, 1022-1028 TOPIC TAM: laser radiation, radiative heating, thermodynamic process IABSTRACr: An investigation was made of the heating process and the gas dynamic motion of matter subjected to the effects of a powerful laser beam. An examination was made of the case when a bounded transparent mass of gas was heated. The problem of the heating of an initially cold and motion- less gas, filling a space bounded by a vacuum, was also solved. The gas dynamic approach for solving these problems was selected because at suf- ficiently powerful fluxes of laser radiation the rise in temperature is accompanied by the formation of gas dynamicmotion of matter (evaporation), which itself exerts a substantial effect gri"the whole process of heating. One of.the features of the process which c6~licates solution of the prob- 4 AP7001995 lem is the dependence of the absorptive power 'on the state of matter during its gas dynamic motion. On the basis of a system of equations for motion, continuity, energy, and radiation transfer, expressed in Lagrange coordi- nates, a system of differential equations was derived. The existence of self-similar motion was shown. The results of the self-similar solution and of the numerical calculations were obtained and compared. A study was made of the possibility.of employing the results obtained to describe the heating and evaporation of matter from the surface of a solid body under the effect of a 0-switched laser beam. Tyg. lek. 1957, t214 (13C-M) Measurements of venous, pressure (V.P.) were carried out in 1011 uns-Ilected patients, 1"S yr. old, before, during and after abdominal and thyroid sur.cry. In 641 patients the pre-operative venous pressure was elevated (normal values were considered to le between 70 to 110 nun. water). Thiswas attributed to emotional factors related to the anticipation of surgery. The premedication caused an incre-asa in venous pressure in the majority (57 %) of patients. Ether anaesthesia, was aszociated with an increase of venouas Pressure in 44 out of 55 patients. There was a lesser incre-Se. of V.P. in Pat, -a ,,en s naesthetized with evipan (evipal), while in 4 patients operated under loc, anaesthesia the venous ressure decrzased during induction of anaesthesia. Durin- operation, venous pressure ranged from 20 to 400 mm. water, and fluctuated videly from 25 to 220 mm. water. The fluctuations were partly related to changes in the position of patients during operation. The largest increases of venous p~css tire obser- ved during operation occurred-in 7 thyroidectomized patients durin" manipulation on the vessels of the superior pole of the thyroid gland. Moscow, Xzd-vo XedA, 1965, 124-141 :TOPIC TAGS: geophysic expeditionj, earth stracturep seismic prospectings ocean floor topographys tectonics ABSTRACT: Mrine geophysical exploration have been conducted in the Soviet Union for the purpose of investigating the czufftal structure, and regional geological investiga- tions have been made in offshore areas which are potential oil- and gas-bearing stzuctures. The seismic method is the most effective and most often used for off - shore investigationes Also successful are gravimetric, magnetic, and electric prospecting methods. The technique of offshore seismic shooting has been greatly improved, making it possible to operate from a moving ship. The geophysical investi- gations conducted on the Caspian Sea mads it possible to distinguish the areas of ACC NR, AT6028378 the Pre-Cambrian Epihercynian platform and the Alpine geosyncline. Iryestigations have been made of the regional structure of the south Caspian depression, oil-bearing regions of its folded margins, and gentle structures of the internal depression. j7he area of the Epihercynian platform has been found to contain Kara-Bugaz and ' middle Caspian arches and offshore continuation of the South MangLohlack depression as well as folded zones. The continuations of the South Mangishlack and Karpinsky ridge, the north Caspian zone of marginal uplifts of the Pre-Cambrian platform and the offshore continuation of the Pre-Caspian depression have been thorougbly l investigated. A number of structures in the southern part of the Caspian Sea have been prepared for deep drilling. At the Sea of Azov a step-like submergence of the southern slope of the Pre-Cambrian platform has been established, and the Azov rampart, which connects the Epihercynian folded structures of the Northern Caucasus and Crimem steppe has been located. Offshore continuations of the Kerch-Taman dislocations have been studied. At the Black Sea geophysicists have studied the hidden Cretaceous folding anddeep-seated faults at the offshore continuation of the Kolkhida depression, submergence of the northwestern Caucasus, buried highs south of the Crimea and the jointing between the Crimean and Dobrudga dislocations. Also the structure of the crust and the structure uf the sedimentary strata in the deep- sea areas have been studied. Seismic surveys have been conducted to study the Igeology of the Paleozoic deposits and the surface of the basement in the eastern JBaltic Sea. It has been established that the thickness ofthe sediments vithin the offshore continuaticn of the Polish-Lithuanian qmeclise does not exceed 3 km. ilInteresting results have been obtains& from geophysical investigations conducted at Card ACC NIZ : Nr6 u,6378 the Kara Sea near the mouths of the Ob and Ycniscy Rivers. The regional ctructura ,of the-Jamal-Mazim depression and the-Taimir foredeep has been defined, major platforn structures have been located in the Fasozic strata, and the TaLmir ha3 been followed further out into the 'sea. Deep-seated structure of the Earth's crust has been inve3tigated in the transitional zone between the Asian continent and the Pacific Ocean, and also at the Okhotsk Sea and in the area of the Kamchatka- Kurile ridge. It has been found that the Sakhalin Tertiary folding area extends under th6 waters of 'the Okhotsk Sea. Marine geophysical eixploration in the USSR !.will be expanded. Orig. art. has: 7 figures. Moscow, Metallurgizdat, 1958, pp 141-149 ABSTRACT: Data on the running of analyses of various gases (coke, blast-furnace, enriched coke, producer, and mixtures thereof) are presented. It is pointed out that in the majority of cases analyses are not automated and require a great deal of time. Descriptions are provided of the simplest kinds of equipment for taking samples and of absorbent liq- uids for various components. An instrument for the automatic dis- placement of gas from a burette to an absorption vessel, and vice versa, is described.
