DESCRIPTIONS:
This collection consists of the records of Harold Stassen,
the Special Assistant to the President for Disarmament. The
records include correspondence, memoranda, reports and
printed material concerning the position of the United
St-ates on atomic and nuclear weapons. The material documents
the negotiations between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R., the
activities of the President's Special Committee on
- Disarmament, Senate hearings on disarmament, the testing
of nuclear weapons, and positions on disarmament taken by
various NATO countries, notably Canada, Great Britain and
France. This material was turned over to the State
Department by Stassen's successors on the White House staff
about 1959, and was later sent to the U.S. Arms Control
and Disarmament Agency when~it became an independent agency.
