"Effect of y-Irradiation on the Stability of Polyvinyl Chloride Plasticizers"
Moscow, Plastfcheskiye Massy, No 1, 19730 pp 16-18
Abstract: A study was made of the effect of y-radiatton on the chemic.11 $ta-
bility of phthalic esters, sebacia acid and adipic acl.d and the effect of Lite
nature of the acid and alcohol radicals of plasticizur*- on their behavior
during -radiation. y-Irradiatiou. of plasticizers leiads to a sharp increatie
in their acidity; therefore, variation of this index vilao taken as one of the
criteria for evaluating the degree of deconpositLon of the plasticizeri.
The degree of composition depends, stgn-~ficantly on thia tenj;th of the alcohol
radical. With an increase in length of this radical the acl-dLty of the
plasticizer andAN increase (N Is the tiumber of carboxtrl grolps in the
plasticizer).
The decompoal.tion of the esters was described as

The results of the effect of the nature of the alkyl radical. of esters of
phthalic acid on their resistance to y-radiation and the eff"e.-tt of the -ature
of the acid -radical on the resistance of polyvinyl chloride plasticizen; to
y-radiation are tabulated. After subjecting dtoctyl pl-ahalate and dtactyl
adipate to y-radiation with diffe-rent initial acidity it waq found that the
greater the *'.nitial acidity of those compounds, the le~vs tho relative increase
in acidity a::ter irradiation. The Increase in acidity for dioctyl phthalate
after irradiation was always less than for dioctyl adipate. Thus, dioctyl
phthalate hats self-defensive properties with respect tci y-radiation. The high
stability of "acid" plasticizers can be explained by the fact: that tile high
content of free carboxylic acid Ln the initial esters lirevegits their decom-
position under the effect of y-radiation. The stabiliiiation- of the esters
by carboxylic. acid probably arises from the absorption or diusipation of
some portion of the y-radiation energy.

Abstract: An instrument is described that has boen develonzed fcr
measuri-ng the SHP 1per-n-Ittivity by the dielectric: reac,nince mar~h-i.
A cylindrical soample is placed within the concentratod p~o:,Z;ian of
a magnetic field in a waver
.,uido. Reconance is deLected by a rrobe
placed at the trough of the 3tanding waves. The dielectric rezcn-
ance Doints are cro3sed by changing the temparatrare -1.nd dielectric
permittivity of the sn-YnDles. A diagriun of the e:rper-Amentril ecluir,-

It was found that a transverse field decreasea -,.,~he rermiz;tivity
of bhe samples, but to a lesser degree than a langittidin'a 1 fiold.
It is suggested that the dielectric nonlinec-rity Mechanict'.1 in
paraelectrics is due principally to the, sataration o-V the elec-
tron-ion polarization and not to the field orientatibn of the
domains remaining above the Curie po;intt

Moscow,_Radiotekhnika i elektronika, Val XVII, No 2, 197.?, pp 345-350
Abstract: Results are presented fron measuring the radiation directivity pat-
tern of a heterodyne receiver of CO 2- laser emission, Application of the hatero-
dyne receiver constricts the directivity pattern, to 0.007-0.01. rads.
Figures are presented showing the resulto of measuxing tho dirc-ctIvIty
patterns of the heterodyne receiver in the 10.6 micron rasige. Tor comparison
of the directivity pattern of direct and heterodyne. receptloon, flie direcLiviLY
was measured for Ge-Au and Ge-Zn-Sh receivers operating ato videodetectors.
The application of the heterodyne. metivod of reception n3rVOWs the directivity
pattern by 15 times and provides significant (2C decibels) gain in the signal.

Summary
The activity of the aldoiase, glucose-6-phosphate-delt),(Il-kigc-.niiit,, lact3te-dithydroge-

in the liver and kidneys of scorbutic guinea pigs. A terl(Wricytoivatdi reduced activ'i ty of
nearly all enzymes was observed, except for that of sorbito-d0tydrogiinase which wns rit;ing
The author associates these changes with diminished glticose -cleav-ige in tile course
of glycolysis and pentose cycle, this being compensated Nir by tne scoTbutic organism

the plants while the third holds a ventilator and conihimiser. In the ci~nter
of the chamber are an electric heater, humidifier, temptratuve and humidity

Abstract: Distributions of the inistantaneous values of the tound pressure
of natural underwater noises were Atudied experimentally in Ole surf-noise
zone 10-600 meters from the shoreline, at a depth of 2 to 20 M, witbill
the frequency range of 100-8000 Hz, and in the far coastal aon,i! 20 1(m from
the coastline, at a depth of 130 m, within the fraquenc~ ranj;e of 5-11,000
Hz. In applications Lasting 0.05 to 1200 seconds, the dism1bution lai in
the far coastal zone is Gaussian, and in the surf--noise rone the distribution
law is non-Gaussian and is distributed by cons I der nble ex~et~s and asynirmerry.
The obtained results are discussed. 3 figure.s. 6 refercncaa.
