ABSTRACT: The first mentioned author has found amrliex that glYcoIJ.C.
acid accelerates the transformation of p-benzoquirlone in
centrifuged homogenates of barley leaven (Rorf 1),, It was
assurned that glycolic acid reduces p-benzoquinone in the
presence of the oxidaae of glycolic acid. Besiden these two
compounds various phenol derivatives are widespread in green
plants which can be oxidized to quinone. plienola
and quinones are components of respitz"toiy ryster~z (Her 2).
The process mentioned in the- title io ;% hardly explained part
of these 3ystens. It was therefore intoresting to carry out
a detailed invootigation of the reduotion nil?(ftianism. For the

leaves of Trapezond-type tobacco were vsed. 11; was found
that aqueous yellow rjolutiona of p-beiizoquinone remaining at
room temperat tire turn red. This pvneena is accelerated by
increasing 9H-values; p-benzoquinone i.-, con-,-xned and :3=11er
quantities of oxy-,,ren are adsorbed. In t'-ie iolution hydro-
quinone can be detected in first approxi, iation in a Quantity
t"hat is proportional to the intensity of t1--io, coloration
and th+-benzoquinone used but not to the ,ijantity of oxyqren
aboor-bed. Besides ti-io tra:;sforriiation of p-berzoquinone into
hydroquinones some oxidative processea seen to take place
in the aqueous solution, which are not taking -part in tite
mentioned trnnsf or-i,,at ion. It was found that aome preparationa
syll tile Oizod fron tile ~'reeyl lenveo accolerate the transformation
just mentioned. The addition of glycolle mi,'L increanvo this
acceleration (Table 1). Since the red color in considerably
decreased by the :iddition of glycolic acid c:,n iuhibition
of the formation of tiie colored compol-ivils t,~e -Iyc3laste
must be assumed, which is forned in t,io opontanpous trane-
formation of p-benzoquinone. The m#~thods of the transformation
of p-benzoquinone have not been expl.Uned experimentully.

The red coloration probably cones from polymerization products.
According to the authors' opinion the last mentioned inhibition
tends to 3how that the quinone reduction 41akez place directly
at the expense of the hydrogen of the g-lylliolate and of the
oxidation energy of the glycolate. Thus, the stage of the
formation of oxy-hjdroquirione is avoided. This process is proved
by the formation of glyoxylic acid besides hydroquinone (Table 1).
It may be seen therefrom that the glycalate acrelerates the
quinone tranaforimation. only by such preparations tli-~t contain
the oxidase of glycolic acid. This takea -olace the more rapidly
the more active this oxida.se is. There ,.ire 1 table and 4 refer-
ences, 2 of which are Soviet'.

ABSTRACT: The article deals with the technical and tactical training of signal-
communication personnel of all ranks in radio transmission and aural reception of
radiograms. Training programs are given for radio-telegraph operators in their
first ye,-.ir of military service and for servicemeni with long service. A graphic
schedule is given for tactical and special exercises and for developing standards of
protection against mass-destruction weapons for a signnI-coinmunication company.
The article is illustrated by photographs showing servicernim engaged in training,
