AUTHOR: ..-Yevseyev P. K. TITLE: The Distribution of Show a- and Cou4inuous Raln6 'in the Territory of the USSR-(Raspredeleniye livnevykh i oblozhnykh osadkov na territorii SSSR) PERIODICAL: Meteorologiya i Gidrologiya, 1958, 1Tr 3, PP. 13-2o (USSR) ABSTRACT: Rainfall, 'is. divided into three types: shorter, Continuolff tali ani drizzl:e,~. Accordingly the types of these precipitations are recorded in the meteorological stations beside measurements of precip-itaions. Each type is caused by very special processes taking place in the atmosphere. Generally the showers and downpours are either in connection with the origin of the cold fronts or with the instability of the air within their mass. Continuous rains. ' ' occur in the passage of warm fronts or from central parts of cyclones. The light rains* L; are characteristic of the stable air masses. The working experience of the synoptists shows that the observers of the meteorological stations in the overwhelming majority of cases xecord thq nature of the Card 1/4 precipitationB according- to the retoilations, i. e.,,that they Th6 Distribution of Showers andt COUtlUIXOU S:Rslzw 1:1i 50-58-3-2/22 the Territory of the USSR give correct indicationo to the connection. of the precipitations with a certain type of atmospheric processes. Consequently it is possible to divide the total figure of the quantity of precipitation measured in a meteorological station with sufficient accuracy into two parts: into the quantity of precipitations with shower character.- and the quantity of continuous rains' ' _ A separate investigation of the atmospheric precipitations is of great importan ce for the ,solution if several -problems ~1) It permits to determine the quantity of the downpour precipitationa and their diatribution in time and space which has hitherto not yet been att 'ained and which is of special importance for the investigation of climatic conditions. 2) The investigation of the quantitative distribution of downpour precipitations will better determine the part played by tMregions below them in the formation of the precipitations and consequently also precisely define the problems of the humidity circulation. 3) A separate investigation of precipitations will permit a precise determination of problems connected with the Card 2/4 investigation of the soil dampening and the formation of the 7' 2/22 The Distributlon of5howers and C=tltums IWIW 50-58-3- the Territoryiof the USSR flowoffe In,thin.article the scheme of the distribution of showers and of C04-tinuOW rains in the territory of the Soviet Union is given and the types of precipitation in the course of a year are shown, as they are ~characteristic of large physical-geographical regions of the country. As basis for these works served the meteorological observations made at go stations from 1936 to 1954. The period of the values used for the analysis according to individual stations varies between lo and 19 years. For all stations at first tho average values of the shower and 6=tjnU0V5tSja', for every year and then their multiannual average values for every individual month were obtained. Ali data were subjedted to a careful and critical analysis. In the middle latitudes --of the-continent-the humidity-content everywhere increases in the lower half of the troposphere-due to the rise of temperature and increasing evaporation in the warm season, therefore the maximum values of the precipitations are only observed here in the summer - ' -. Ouch a phenomenon on the Card 3/4 continent is observed everywhere when considering the The. Distribution 'of Showers and Contii==,WW~.: 50-~58-3-2/2? the Territory of the USSIR precipitatiohs,as such, without dividing them into types. But when the annual course is considered separately, another relation is obtained. On that occasion it becomes evident that in some regions the annual course of the quantity of shover precipitations Is-opposite-t-o1he annual course of the quantity of lasting precipitations. In other regions, however, it develops parallel"for both types of precipitations. At the same time all types of the annual course of shower and eon~inuousralzls~.:, have -a completely -concrete physical basis. The distribution of these two types of precipitations in mainly caused by the circulation of the atmosphere as well as by seasonal changes and above all by the intendity of the cyclonic circulation. K.- TITLE: --- -Interrelation Between the Atmosph~,Tic Precipitations and the Total ,Radiation, Evaporation and Absolute HtzaLdity .(Svyazl atm,)sfernyk~ osadkov 9 summarnoy radiatsiyey, ispareniyem i absolyutnoy vlazh- PERIODICAL: Meteorologiya i gidrologiya, 1958, Nr 10,,Pp 18-23 (USSR) ABSTRACT: The solar radiation, when falling onthe basement area, is warming ' the latter and intena ifying, evagoration~ This leads to an increase in the moisture content of the air. If the basement area 4S Suf- ficiently. moistened and the radiation intensive enough, the thermo- dynamic processes in the atmosphere are.terminated by the formation of cumulus rain clouds and fall of pelting rain (cloudbtxrst). If these processes are not sufficiently active, additional forces are then necessary to raise the warm, moistened air up to the con- deneation level. This additional lifting of the warm air is caused on cold fronts mostly by the underflowing of cold air and by an upward removal ot the "local" warm air. On a sufficient activity of the processes mentioned pelting rains take place. Thus the total radiation, local evaporation and absolute humidity directly take Card 1/3 part in the formation of the kind of precipitations mentioned. SOT/50-58-10-3/20 Interrelation Between the Atmospheric Precipitations and the Total Radiation, Evaporation and Absolute Humidity (~aite a different picture can be seen in the formation of general rain. In middle latitudes they are related with the passing of warm.air fronts or cyolone centers. These precipitations are, with respect to the area on which they use to fall, of "foreign" nature, viz. they have been formed outside this area.- Therefore. the solar, , radiation, local evaporation and absolute humidity of the cor- - responding area cannot exert a direct influence upon the formation of precipitations of that kind. Table 1 presents the correlation coefficients between the radiation and both kinds of precipitation (Ref 3)~ It may be seen from it that nearly in the whole European part of the USSR there is a close relationship between pelting rainfalls and radiation.- The connection between radiation and general rains has a reverse character sinoe,fAll (excepted Murmansk) correlation coefficients have a negative sign and very unstable values,. The above statements are hereby confirmed~ L o c a 1 E Y a p o r a t i o n . Intable 2 the correlation co- efficients between local evaporation (from Ref 4) and precipitationi Card 2/ 3 are given. PURPOSE: The pamphlet is intended for scientists and teachers working in the field of geophysics and geodesq,,, COVEMAGE: The pamphlet presents observation data on gravitatiou- phenomena used to deduce certain new laws concerning the Earth's gravitational field. The gravimetric polygons were set out in ii,iountainous areas, including the Pamirs,, Cauoaous,, Alps,, South Himalayas,, North Himalayas,, Altayj, Caxpathians,, and in Hawaii. Card 1/,:', Certain -Regulai-ities in. the,:Earth.9 0. (cont*,) .826 The book analyzes and evaluates-the data obtained and discusses px,aatical applications. The author empahsizes that some of these pi:-obl(=s are still little known,, but knowledge of them is essential in.broadening the visia.6 of geophysical and geodetic studies'. The w.xthor-believes he has succeeded in proving that the values of gravitational acceleration change with altitude. -.He offers a nam interpretation of regional anomallem; he is skeptical of the applitiation of theories of isostasy; inadditlon,, he re-examines the interpolation and extrapolation of 11,,ravitational anomalies to rander their estimations more realistia,,. The following Soviet sl:ientist~s are mentioned as having contributed to the study of the new t3,pe anomalies; F, N. Xrasovsk:Ly,,- A, A, Izotov, A. N. Tikhonov, Jr. A. Magnitskiyt Yu. D. In order to avoid unreliable-or incorrect results, it is necessary to fulfill several strict condi- tions. InTarticular it is necessary to,moaify the technique by using the Fourier expansion-, -In various parts of the world,- the value of the coefficient of elevation remains the'same and is equal.to the Bouguer reduction factor. A relationship exists between thf-I'local anomalies (obtained after remaying the regional background) and isostatic tizomalies. Introduction-of the above coefficient appears to be useful when mean I-Sravity anomalies are used. Free-air anomalies mqj be represented as a sum of the expansion terms, each of which is prt~portional to the average elevation Card To Fe -IIThe- Problarl -of theDevalopment-of the.Podolisk 'Fomationt (Podnestrov'YOO" Dok.
