To expand the operating tempera- hire range of the 6i1, a petroleum fraction with a boil-away of 4-5% at 240-320C is added to the lubricant. This fraction is obtained from the petroleum disti'llate at 300-310C. For this reason the association mentioned below developed a new method for the determination of the horizontal z-hift of water power str-.ctures by means of a stretched string. This method can be used with the majority of large viater power developments now under construction. The entire equipment is mounted on the gallery immediately after the concrete pouring of the third floor has been completed. A t'hin _--,tre~.-ch;_-,d steel wire Card 1/3 is used as a reference mark for determinin;:7 the shifts of Deteninination of Horizontal Shift of W.-ter 1P.-yacr SW/l Structures With iiespect to a Stretched StrinU, the individual sections of the buildings. In each section, tho wire crests upon two It'lonting- supp,'-,rts ~tnd it is ri,~-idly fixed the 'ro f'aiilrin(~ sections of the building. Hence t~ie relative shift of each section can be, measured. In order to check this, method an experimertal device was built in t~ic laboratory. The test runs with this device confirmed the hypothesis thA. it is posFAble to use this method for measurements of t'le horizon" al shift of water power strixct,,;res. "oreover, t'ie require-iments pl-ced upon the performance of such work on the spot became clear. This method was tested in t'ie Ku. byshev water power development and it stood its test very well. The work connected with t1iis taF,11- lasted, with some interruptions, from November 1955 to "Aarch 1956. The information collected demonstrated that the sections without exception clip towards the tailrace at different rates. The accaracy of this :-)ethod supersedes that of surveying methods almost by a fa-~,,tor of 10. Card 2/3 There are 5 figures. The six groups of animals were subjected to various treatment as follows: Group 1 was placed for 1 hr. in a low-pressure chamber with a pressure of 405 mm Hg and percentage of oxygen of 11. 3, Group 2 with a pressure of 198 mm Hg and 5% oxygen; Group 3 with a pressure of 405 mr i HG for 1 hr. and pure oxygen; Group 4 with a pressure of 198 mm Hg and pure oxygen; and Groups 5 and 6 at 750 mm Hg and a mixture of air containing 11. 2% and 5.5% oxygdn, respec- tively. The results showed an increase In blood amino nitrogen and an Increase in the serum transaminase activity (SGPT and SGOI) in Groups 1 and 2. The work was done on a new, 10 MeV9 ion accelerator built in one section, 18 m long, at the Technical Physics Institute of the AS UkrSSR. With a wave- length of 2 m it was necessary to insert 101 drift tubes into the resonator. The calcul.,ted value was 138,000, the discrepancy being ekplained by possible differences in the quality of copper -and its surface, and also by the fact that the resonator is not round but sixteen- sided. The shunt impedance was determined on a model resonator 1 m long and of the same diameter as the working one. The shunt impe- dance was found to be 20 Mohm/m. Of all the oscillations '~mnl and H which can occur in the space of the resonator 1BOli are of the mnI_ greatest importance as these are close to the.principal oscilla- tion E010 used for accelerating the particles. D210/D304 separation between the frequencies decreases sharply as the elec- trical length increases. Por a 2 m wave in a 18 m resonator the difference between the prtncipal and the nearest frequencies is only 230 kc/s. The experimental results for the resonator loaded with drift tubes are given in tabulated form, and show that the difference between the frequencies of Eolo and Boil amounts to only 93.8 kels as compared to the calculated difference of 230 kc/ ..s. The authors state that the insertion of the drift tubes into the resonator is equivalent to extending its electrical lengthq at least as far as the difference between the principal and the near- est neighbor field intensities is concerned. Thus, for the loaded resonator N = 13.8 which corresponds to an unloaded length of 27 m for Ao = 2 m. The authors finally point out that the appearance of possible vibration modes close to the principal ones may seriouoly impede the input of high frequency energy when the energy source is an autogenerator. There is always danger of a drift or even a jump to the neighboring frequency. This is aggravated by the fact that Card 5/6 28429 S/185/61/006/002/001/'020 High frequency characteristics ... D210/D304 at the ends of the resonator the amplitude of the neighboring fre- quencies is nearly 1.5 times greater than that of the principal one, and it is at the ends of the resonator that the generators drift towards the neighboring frequency flo There are 5 f"igures, 1 table, and 4 references: 1 Soviet-bloc and 3 non-Soviet-bloc. TITLE: Smoothing of the accelerating field in a "long" resonator for linearly accelerating heavy particles PERIODICAL: Ukrayinslkyy fizychnyy zhurnal, v. 6, no. 2, 1961, 163 166 TEXT: The author described methods of accurately levelling a field of large electrical length. The levelling was done on a resonator 18 m long loaded with 101 drift tubes and having an electrical length of N = 13.8. This problem had to be studied specially be- cause of the difficulty of aligning fields in resonators contain- ing many drift tubes. For making field measurements the resonator was excited with a highly stable generator. The electric field strength at the axis of the resonator was determined by measuring the magnetic field at its surface, using a magnetic probed The measurements were carried out on a compensating bridge and were Card 1/40 7' 2NOO S/185/61/006/002/002/020 Smoothing of the accelerating ... D210/D304 accurate to about 0.1 %. The levelling of the field along the accelerating path can be achieved either by varying the drift tube diameter along the resonatort or by tuning discs attached to the drift tubes. Although the latter method reduces the high frequency energy (r,,20 %) it was adopted because of its convenience for field levelling. The diameter of the tuning discs was chosen at 20 cm. This allowed satisfactory tuning for each segment of the resonator. The first step in the alignment was to determine the frequency characteristics for the drift tubes, 8 em diameter, and discs, 20 cm diameter. This was done on an experimental resonator with a diameter of 1.5 m and I m long, and the resuits are shown in Fig. 2. Using these curves the resonator field wan adjusted at a frequency of 142o5 Mc/s to within 10 % of the average. The se- cond step of the alignment was to use the method of harmonic ana- lysis which is based on the expansion of waves EOR into Fourier series. Using this method the authors levelled the electric field in the resonator to with in 1 %9 although the electrical length of the resonator is 1o5 times greater than that of the longest Card 2/4 S/18 62/Ok 7 "C-OP/D-2/0' 673) D299%)309 Ye.T,y AUTHU~'-~~S: Bolotin, L.Y. The object was to explain the rise of arterial pressure occurring during the test. The blood sugar fell in 61.516 of subjects. rose in 34.5916 and remained unchanged in 3.1170. Of the 38 patients with hypertensive vascular disease, 25 reacted with a fall of blood sugar; some others showed biphasic curves (increase followed by decrease or vice versa). Of the 7 healthy subjects, 4 showed a fall of blood sugar, 2 a rise and one no change. It is concluded that the mechanism of the rise of blood pressure in the flines-Brown test is complex and probably does not depend on the participation of adrenaline. (Z Kliniki Interny PoloweJ A.
