Aortography is best perro-rmed with translumbar punture of the aorta. The techni-
que is described in detail. In the course of the procedure, the blood pressure, ECG,
pulse and respiration remain unaltered. also the blood levels of urea, glucose.
cholesterin and bilirubin, the Takata-Ara reaction and the protein index. Occasion-
ally. fresh erythrocytes are found in the urine; these disappear in 2 or 3 days. The
results of renal function tests and the clearance values also remain the same. An-
glography Is a morphological and a functional examination method at the same time.
It Is indicated: 1) When urography has not given distinct results and pyelography In
impossible; 2) in cases suspected of tumour, when urography and pyelography have

. ielded no definite results; 3) in unexplained haematuria. 4) in hydronephrosis. to
determine the severity of the renal destruction and sometimes the aberrant vessel;
5) renal anomalies; 6) renal cysts; 7) renal vascular diseases: 8) renal tuberculosis.
to determine the level of the possible resection; 9) renal hypertrophy; 10) diseases
of other retroperitoneal organs. for the differential diagnosis; 11) affections of the
abdominal aorta and its branches. Contraindications as for urography; renal in-
sufficiency (uraemia). severe pulmonary diseases, w6tive tuberculosis. exudative
diathesis, hyperthyreosis. hypersensitivity to iodine and hepatic insufficiency.
Renal anglography was carried out 60 times in 52 patients. In 18 cases the diagno-
sis could be made only on the basis of the aortographic data. With the exception of
tuberculosis, the aortographic images of renal diseases are characteristic. Focal
dilatation of the vascular network around the tumour, sparse. lengthened vessels:
hydronephrosis; avascular part of the kidney: renal cyst. Complications. para-
aortic diffusion of the contrast medium and oozing of the blood after puncture are
unimportant. Injection into a branch of the aorta used to be dangerous when Mal
was used as a contrast medium, but with the modern media this in harmless. It
was only in one case that collapse was observed during aortography (renal hyper-
trophy). After blood transfusions this condition was soon overcome.

pyrometer was employed. The observed endotherodo and wcothermic processesp due to

ABSTRACT: The optimum conditions for the vinyl exchange between diphenylamines
and vinyl acetate are provided when the reaction is carried out for 10 hours in an
acetone solution in the presence of HgSO4at 20C. The resulting N-vinyl diphenyl-
amine polymerizes directly in this reaction medium, forming polymers during the
vinyl acetate conversion of 90-1007a. With a yield of 72-73%, a fraction is obtain-
ed which is insoluble in methanol and consists of a white amorphous powdered
polymer with a molecular weight of 800-1050, and a melting point of 115-130C.
The polymer io soluble in aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorobenzene, dioxane,

chloroform, and pyridine, only slightly soluble in methanol and ethanol, and insolu-
ble in water. The specifib volume resistance is 1015 ohm/cm, dielectric perme-
ability is 2. 8 (at a frequency of 105 cps). The reaction under other conditions at
0, 10, 30, 40C and 4, 6, 8 hours in acetone and dioxane produces a polymer with
a yield of 8-6076, while no reaction takes place in pyridine, ether, and nitrobenzen

ABSTRACT: The measurement of the thickness of objects which only present
one accessible surface for measurement (walls of autoclaves,
piping, etc.) is of greatest importance with regard to cor-
rosion and erosion requirements. It was for this purpose that
the apparatus mentioned in the title was constructed. This
apparatus makes it possible to measure thicknesses of I or
2 to 30 mm. The error involved is a maximum of 2% with thick-
nesses of 2-5 mm, and Is 1% maximum with thicknesses of 5-30 mm.
The diameter of the piezo vibrators in the apparatus is 13 mm,
but this can be reduced to 5-7 mm. A 6Ye5S electron-optical
indicator was used. The determination with this apparatus is
based upon measuring the time interval between two impulses

ABSTRACT: The author revealed the possibility of ultrasonic flaw detection in thick
weld Joints as applied to high and low pressure welded rotors of gas
turbines. The "UZD-12" flaw detectoriqdesigned by the Leningrad Institute
ot, Electrical Engineering was used for tests. The rofo-r--&o-~-s~istsof
"Ei-405" st el disks welded onto each other with "TsT-7" and "TsT-15"
electrodes. The seam depth Is 90 mm, the width is 45 - 50 mm. After
welding the rotor was subjected to stabilization at 8500C, for 10 hours,
with subsequent slow cooling. It was not possible to apply ultrasonic
oscillations from the side of the base metal by a straight rod in radial
direction; they were applied under an angle directly to the seam metal.
The author determines the dependence of damping of ultrasonic oscillations

damping of austenite seams is considerably higher than that of pure Fe with relative-
ly coarser grains, It was stated that if k /D - 1, where 7L Is the ultrasonic wave-
length and D is the grain diameter, the frequency has only a slight effect on damping;
this proves the existence of diffusion dispersion. Prismatic double tongs are suggested
~for operation at lower frequencies. Experiments confirmed that the coarse crystalline
structure of built-up metal in stabilized state was able to reflect ultrasonic waves,
which were.received as defects on the flaw detector screen. The investigations were
conducted v~ith the use of ultrasonic oscillations of 2.5 Me frequency, the'radial sound
depth was not over 10 - 15 mm. A special flaw detector with a depth gage was designed
to detect the.dept~h of the defect location and equipped with a set of double prismatic
tongs of a new design, operating at low frequency (0.8 Me).

TEXT: The possibility of using a second 8 x 8 stage in
the magnetic decoder of the Z type memory unit with two cores per
digit was investigated. The total capacity of the storage unit is
4096 words. The first stage of the decoder of 64 x 64 size is
built with the standard coordinate triggers of the memory unit of
BESM-2. Three variants of the second stage were investigated and

a version which uses a constant bias (7.6 ampere-turns) and coinci-
dent X and Y current pulses was ado ted. The cores investigated
were marks K-28, BT -1 (K-28, VT-13, and ribbon-wound. The great
temperature stability of the latter is stressed. The f inal variart
uses VT-1 cores of 5 x 3 mm size. The output current of the second 1)(
stage of the decoder is 1.6 amps � 1076. In the output stages of
the X and Y current drivers it is useful to replace the F9'_50
(GU-.50) tubes by two parallel connected MIX (6Pl3S) tubes. The
driving current is 1.4 amps, the duration of the pulses is I micro-

.~XT: The paper describes the design problems involyed in the making of a
d4endable operative memory-storage unit for high-speed computers. The utili.-,;a-
tiob of magnetic macerials, namely, ferrites, having a rectangular hysteresis loop
(41L), has made possible a great step forward in the solution of this problem. The
.er describes the current Soviet memory unit based on the use of ferrites,
Pligned according to the so-called "Z" principle, which offers an advantage ov(k'r
the matrix-type by the unbounded intensity of the counting current which permits the
forced magnetic polarity reversal (MPR) of the memory core and which provides'
means for obtaining a high-amplitude signal through an elevated rate of change o~
the flux, &D /dt. The Z-type memory is described in detail. In order that the load
of the coordinate transformer and, consequently. its output current remain constarit
and do not change as a function of the code, a load stabilization is applied. For that

purpose the Z-type memory equipment developed at the ITMiVT (Institute of Pre-
cision Mechanics and Computer Engineering), AS USSR, is equipped with. a method
of load stabilization by means of compensation cores. In that instance every cell
that contains the code of a single digit of a binary number consists of two cores, an
operating and a compensating one. The functioning of such a cell is described. A
description and schematic diagram is shown of the design of the control equipment
of a memory cube for 4,096 numbers. The proposed magnetic decoder comprises
an ordinary network of transformers operating in a switching mode. It has 8 inputs
on each side and 64 outputs. Upon excitation of one of the 6 X-buses and also
14-buses, a MPR occurs in the decoder in the one transformer that ties on the inter-
ction of the excitation currents, and the desired channel current is issued into
tTe network from the coordinate transformers. At that time, 7 transformers along

ep ch a)ds will be semiexcited and will issue noise currents. Two such decoders
are needed. A solution leading to a more satisfactory result is shown in a "cross" -
dolution consisting of 8 series -connected transformers for each coordinate X and y.
Details of the circuitry are explained and depicted graphically. The intensity of the
,resulting signals, both of negative polarity (code "I") and of positive polarity (code
010") lie between 400 and 600 mv, that is, within the range prescribed by the Engin-

'TITLE: Duplex Two-pass Method of Cutting Bevel Gear Pairs

ABSTRACT: A proposal, due to A.L. Laschaver, called the duplex
two-pass method, for the cutting of small and medium pitch
bevel Sear pairs with circular teeth of constant height is des-
cribed. Practical tests are said to have established the use-
fulness of the method up to a module of 5.5 mr, In order to
cut the wheel and pinion teeth zith the same cutting head, the
width of the tooth gap and the tooth must be constant along the
whole of its length. This determines the spiral angle, and a
table gives the cutting head diameters which can be sg chosen
that the spiral angle remains in the range of 30 - 40 . The
cutting heads do not differ from the normal design, but have
diameters other than standard. Referince is made to the senior
author's previous paper in Vestnik hiashinostroyeniya, 1955,
vo.10. An editorial note disclaims the applicability of the
method to gears of a module exceeding 2 mm, and states other
disadvantages, including a non-standard pressure an,~le and the
(;ardl/l large assortment of cuttinG heads required.
