TITLEs A potentiometric method for studying the splitting-off
of gasified H01 during the thermal destruction of poly-
vinyl chloride

TFLXT: Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) ages during the splitting-off of
gasified HC1 and hydrocarbons by the effect of heat, light and io-
nizable alkalinity. The velocity of HC1 splitting-off permits in-
directly the process of PVC destruction-to be traced. The authors
elaborated the potentiometric method, during which the concentra-
tion of HC1 absorbed in water is determined by measuring the poten-
tial of the chloro-silver electrode. The advantage of this method
is in a larger selectivity which is especially advantageous for
tracing reaction kinetics. After describing how they traced the ki-
netic sj~:Iitting-off of HC1 from the powdered PVC in the flow of

oxygen, air and argon by the potentiometric method, the authors
give the results in Figs. 3, 4 and 5 with the graphs of functions
M = f(rC, t = conet), where m is the quantity'~,of the split-off HCl
for the given temperature t and is expreSBed*'in millimoles per gram
PVC and % is the time. The kinetic curves of the splitting-off H01
in the flow of oxMen (Fig. 3) has an 3 shape. The curvature of the
curves in the starting times is caused by the thermal inertia of
the heating-regulating system. The lovier the temperature, the less
is the curvature at the start. The linear part of the curves corres-
ponds to the constant velocity of the splitting-off of HC1. The de-
crease in the velocity of the splitting-off after the longer time
intervals is due to the decreasing number of non-decomposed macro-
molecules of PVC. The run of the kinetic curves of HC1 splitting-
off in the flow of air and argon (Pigs. 4 and 5) is completely ana-
logous in quality. The value of the mean active energy of the
splitting-off of HC1 was calculated per Arheniov's equation

OK. The values of the relative velocities of the splitting-off of
HC1 were determined on the basis of'directions of linear parts of

log (dm/d,6) = F(T-1) is also shown for argon. The linear run of
this function proves that the accuracy of the measurement is satis-
factory. The value of the mean active energy of the splitting-off
of HC1 in the argon flow, determined by 3q. (b) is 30;4 kcal7(mole
HC1). This result is in sound agreement wi.th the results obtained
during the destruction of PVC in vacuum with maBs-spectroscopic me-
thods. The authors assume on the basis of kinetic measurements that
the splitting-off of H01 starts at the end of -the maoromolocules.

The breaking of the chains of non-decomposed macromolecules and the
increase in the number of the end groups occurs in this phase of
the process probably due to the influence of oxygen and temperature.
It is possible that during these time intervals, the HC1 spl4.tting-
off starts under the influence of oxygen not only at the ends but
also in the middle of the macromolecules. The basic difference bet-
ween the values of the relative velocity proves that the medium, in
which the destruction of PVC occuned, basically affects the process
of HC1 splitting-off. Further it is clear that HC1 in the oxygen
medium Is splitting-off from the PVC macromolecules which in their
properties differ from the macromolecules, from which the HCl is
splitting-off in the argon atmosphere. There are 6 figures and 5

ABSTRACT: New I- and 2-kw minature electric power plants driven
by type 2 CA -B, 2 C,4 -M and YA -1 gasoline engines are
described. The 2 C11-B and the 2 Ca-M are single-
cylinder, two-cycle, 2 hp. engines at 3,000 r.p.m.
The 2 CA -B engine differs from the 2 CA-M engine by
the type of magneto and the magneto drive, and by the
centrifugal governor drive. The 2 Q41-B engine weighs
22 kg, the 2 Ca-M weighs 17.5 kg. The rated service
life is 800 hrs. The YA-1 is a single cylinder, four
cycle engine developing four h.p. at 3,000 r.p.m. With
its housing of light alloy the motor weighs 55 kg and
has a guaranteed service life of 800 hrs. The houbings

The electric-power-plant generators are single-phase,
synchronous, 50 cycle, 230 V, flanged, salient-pole
generators with excitation through selenium rectifiers
from a special, supplementary winding. The one-kilowatt
electric power plant with its metal jacket weighs 75 kg.
The unit can be operated at altitudes of up to 1,000 m
above sea level, with a relative humidity of.up to 98
per cent, and at ambient temperatures ranging from -50
to +50% The overload tolerance is 10 per cent of rated
capacity for a period of one hour when the ambient temper-
ature does not exceed +35'.

ABSTRACT: In the articles (Refs 1,2) it was found that the experimental
observations of the ionization potentials (E) of atoms obey
some separate equations. If the ionization potentials are re-
presented in the form Ez,n (Z-atomic number of the element, n -
number of the ionized electron), the above empirical equations
can be represented by four equations (1) - (4). As there are
only few experimental (E)-values available, the formulae
(1) - (4) can be employed for a preliminary calculation of the
(E)-values which have not yet been obtained by experiments. In
this article, a relation of the functions of the parameters
(Table) of the above equations is found. A corresponding modi-
f ication thus permits the use of a single equation instead of the four
