so,veral fish typtis "siammer-" and "winter" races in analogy to
corn. Ile classit'ies also Stenodus leucichthis (Ref 4) among
Ltose rack-s. Farly in the icar the summer races penetrate into
the rivers and spawn in the same year. In autumn the rinter
races come f'rom the sea and penetrate into the rivers. They
reproducp themselves during the foliowing year. These assamp-
tions have, however, not been established by direct observa-
ti,)na. This paper gives informations on this subject. Tn con-
sequence of the construction of the Kuybyshev dam (in the upper
course of the Ufa river) In 195~/1956 the mentioned fish were
prevented from reaching their usual spawning places. It was very

carried out (Ref 5). In this connection the differences between
winter and summer race couid be investigated. In 60 investi-
gated fish no deviations with respect to length and weight as
well as maturity of' spawn and male sexual products could be
found (Table I). Also the chemical analysis of the flesh and
the intestines of the fish did not reveal any clear differences
(Table 2). There im no reason whatsoever, to regard the two
types of fish which penetrate in different seasons into the
rivers and spawn there, as two different racest The time of
migration of Stenodus leuctchthys is very long and therefore
there is no clear difference between the spawning time of tho
two groups (Table 3). There are 3 tables and 6 references, allof
which are Soviet.

COVERA(ZI The collection contains papers reviewing the development of open-
hearth steelmaking theory wA practice. The papers, vritten by staff
members of schools of higher education, scientific research institutes,
and main laboratories of metallurgical plants, were presented and disc-assed
at the Scientific Conference of Schools of Higher Education. The follwing
topics are considere4i the kinetics and mechanism of carbon oxidation; the
process of slag formation in open-hearth fumaces using in the charge either
orc-lime briquets or composite flux (the product of calcining the mixture of
lime with bauxite)j the behaylor of hydrogon in the open-hearth bath; metal
desulfurization processes; the control of the open-hearth thermal malting
regime and its automation, beat-engincering problems in large-capacity
furnaces; aerodynamic properties of fuel gases and their flow in the furnace
combustion chamber, and the Improvement of high-alloy steel quality through
the utilization of vacuum and natural gases. The folloving persons took

ABSTRACT: The article describes methods to be introduced or more widely ap-. 1
plied for quality control of pharmaceuticals In connection with the new edition
of this pharmacopeta. It discusses control methods prescribed in recent foreign
pharmacopefas and the last SSSR edition (EK), such as infrared methods, ultra-
violet spectroscopy, polarography, fluorometry, pH-metry, thin-film chromato-
graphy, combustion under oxygen, and the use of standard preparations. Informa-.
tion on the use of these methods will be included In the new SSSR pharmacopeia.
Soviet control laboratories will have be be provided with the necessary Instru-

ABSTRACT: Continuing the papers of references 1 - 6 the authors intended

Science of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR) imitates the work of the thrust
bearings of hydrogenerators. and enables experiments to be carried out with pillow
blocks of sufficient size to study the affect of thermal and pressure deforma-

load). The friction coefficient at 14 to 76 kg/cm2 load,varied between 0.11 and f 2t
