TEXTs The authors have developed a method for determining the indi-
vidual yields of certain fragments by removing the active gasea during the irra-
diation prooess. The.method was ohec:ked on a chain with a mass number of 139.
- ollowing values of the individugLI yields were obtained: Ba'39 (5.6-+1.3) %;
c"s-%f9 (28.6 t 1-5) %. The A - 139 ctain has the following form:

Xenon was removed, from the uranium solution during.the Irrsdiation and Ba and Cs
were rapidly separated at the end of the process. The aqueous solution of uranyl-
chloride (3 - 6 9 to 5 ml) was Irradiated for 1 min with 14 Mev energy neutrons
and then plaoed in the instrument thown in Figure 1. All the formed gaveous se-

the-sol,utionv The qompleteneen of Xe139 removal f*rom the solution was checked
by idet-ormining the yield of .1139 + X'e139 at various rates of the gas. The author
found that foam-formation is absent if there Is a layer of a pure organic liquid
cm-the top of the Aqueque uranylohloride solution which would not dissolve the
uranium. n-butyl alcohol was used enabling the blowing rate of argon to be raised
to 2.2 1/.min. The separ&tion of B%13 from Cs139 was completed within 1.5 - 2 min
after the terTination of the irradia.tion. After 90 min elapeed from the end of
t,he irrN!Iation (time suffi3ient for gomplete conversion of cs139 to Ba139), a ra-
d1oahemical purification of three BeilJ9 samples was performed: 1) on Ba139 formed
direatly In the separation together with Ba139 formed from cs139 prior to thq
separation, 2) Ba139 rQrmed from C!1139 after the separation of Ba139, 3) Ba'A5
formed from 1139 + Xel-39e The purii'7ioation lasted 30 - 60 min and the degree of
purification of all the samplem w a ohioked from half-life, The saturation ao-
tivity for Ba139, Cs139 and (Xeip 0 1 39) was calculated from the figures of the
three samples. The calculations were performed by formulae obtained from the usu-
al formulae for suooessive radioaotive transformations,*taking the irradiation
%me-Into aciount. The sum of all the activities of saturation was taken as the

values of the Individual yields fall on a curve, similar to the curve of charge
distribution in thermal separation and shifted relative to it by approximately

TITLE: Vacuum evaporation of materials onto thin organic
films

TEXT: A method is described for the removal of heat from
thin organic flimsso that materials with high melting points can
be deposited by vacuum evaporation onto 5he films. The authors
have used collodion films, 10 - 30 Ug/cm thick, attached to light
dural rings with the aid of shellac. A ring carrying the film
was placed on the polished and of a solid brans cylinder and.the
whole assembly was inserted into a vacuum system. After the
pressure was reduced to 0.1 w-n Hg, the film was charged by
placing an electrode at about 1 500 V near it, so that a very
low di'scharge was produced. The results was that the film came
into very close contact with the supporting brass cylinder. The

ABSTRACT: A new type of ed-y current pickup designed for the dimensioning of cylinders
made of nonmagnetic materials is deszribed. The circular magnetoconductor probe had
either a single air gap or 2-diametrically displaced gaps. An exciting magnetic fix]),

tion of dimension parameters and the results are compared to the calculated values.
The effects of shielding and short-closed looping on the distribution of inagnetic
field strength are described. Circular magnetoconductors were found to be free of thei
deficiencies encountervd in straight loop sections. The circular pickup also respond-~
ed better to cross sectional cracks in the tested cylinders. A more unifonn field
was obtained by using selective shielding and short-closed looping in both types of

ing out the ccndenaatiom cf 3-chloropentadiene-1.3 with
proplol-ir, acid and of 3--chlorohexadienc.-1,3 with the same
acid and with propauyl aldehyde. It was found that in these
dierxe syr,theses in all cases the formation of two possible

of the higher melting acid produced in smallar quantities
4--chlorciseph,,halic Ia~ld was obtained so that the formula
4--chloro-3--e-rhyl-, L I -.d.'hydrobenzoic acid had to be attri..
buted to this iaomer. In the condensation of chlorohexadiene
with przparg7 aldehyde a chlorjethyldihydr.:berizoic acid

that the orientations in the diene synthesis are dependent
on other factors than is the case in the subotitution in
the benzene rirg. Thus it was proved that in all condensations
the isomers haNing the alkyl group and the oxygen containing
radical in the ortho position are dominating. There are
7 references, I of which are Soviet.

administration of 200 ml. of 5% alcohol during a
nocturnal oleop was 4.7% higher than during the day,
and the maxi il magnitudes of HC1 in nocturnal gastric
Juice (GJ) Vera 33% higher than in the daytime. After
troatmont vita k6dinal and chloral hydrate, the GJ
volume durine the aleop in a fasting stomach decreased,
