Dear Dick,
I thought you would be interested in seeing the attached good report
on your friend, Bob Schuler.
After a tough start, it looks like our guys in Lisbon are doing what
the Ambassador wants and likes!
DIA in general, and old ISH in particular, appreciate all your help -
overt and covert! A hearty Well-Done to you, then, Dick, and again
Merry Christmas.

Dear General Crittenberger:
Since you took a personal interest in the assign-
ment of Lt. Colonel Bob Schuler as Army Attache here,
I thought it would be useful for me to share with you
my judgment on his performance thus far.
Since his arrival here in June, Colonel Schuler
has performed in outstanding fashion. He moved
quickly to establish a broad network of extremely use-
ful contacts in his area, and did so with maximum good
sense and discretion. In the relatively short time
that he has been here, he has become one of the key
men on my staff. His judgment on all matters is uni-
formly sound and I have come to rely on it. Addi-
tionally, Colonel Schuler is one of the most selfless
officers with whom I have had the pleasure of working:
he willingly gives of his time and energies to work
closely with other sections of the Embassy for the
common good. He deserves the highest praise for the
team spirit that animates his actions.
During the abortive leftist coup of last week
Colonel Schuler performed in a superb fashion. He
was invariably in the right spot at the right time.
His contribution to the Embassy's coverage of this
coup attempt could not have been better.
In sum, Colonel Schuler is doing an absolutely
first-rate job, a job that is deserving of the

highest commendation. I know that you will be as
pleased to hear of Colonel Schuler's magnificent
performance as I am in telling you of it.
