Mr. Riordan Roett
Acting Director
Vanderbilt University
Nashville, Tennessee 37203
Many thanks for your letter of 29 November and my
apologies for not having answered it before.
As far as I know the translation of Marshal Mascarenhas
de Morais' book was done as a special project by the U. S.
Army and I do not know of any similar cases. However, I
will check up on this and let you know. I believe some of
General Lyra Tavares (former War Minister and now
Ambassador to Paris) works may have been translated into
English and I may have some of them. If so, I will send them
on to you. I am sendin you separately another copy of 3).''
Marshal Mascarenhas a '-s`-book for the Vanderbilt
library.
With every good wish for 1973.
Faithfully,
Vernon A. Walters
Lieutenant General, USA

Derek Leebaert has told me of your courtesy in speaking with
him at length about matters Brazilian during his recent visit to Wash-
ington, D.C. It was very good of you to take time from your schedule
to clarify the questions Derek had encountered in writing a paper for
a seminar I am teaching on Latin American politics. The final product
will reflect your assistance I am sure.
The copy of Marshal Mascarenhas de Morais' work on the Bra-
zilian Expeditionary Force to Europe in World War II, which you gave
Derek, was the first edition I had seen printed in English. Would it
be at all possible to obtain whatever English translations exist of
works by Brazilian military figures for-the.Vanderbilt library collec-
tion on Latin America? As you know, Vanderbilt has emphasized Brazil
in its Latin American Studies program and if we were able to purchase
these volumes it would add immeasurably to our permanent collection.
If my thought is at all feasible, I would appreciate your letting me
know where I might write to order or request the volumes.
Anytime the pressures of Washington appear overwhelming, we
would be most pleased to have you visit Vanderbilt and speak with our
students and faculty about your experiences in Brazil. We welcome
visitors and those who know Brazil as well as you do are particularly
welcome!
With best wishes.
Sincerely,
Riordan Roett
Acting Director
