M. 3T-12.-6/j2 T=: The Theory of Magnetic Varlaneters (Tieoriya ms='tnYkh variatsionnykh priberov) PMUODICAL: Trudy nauchno-isoledovatellskogo Instituta zemnogo magmetiWa, ionoafery i rasprostranenlyn radlovoln, 1957, Nr 12 (22), pp. 91-182 (USSR) ABSTRACT: The article d1scusses the general theory of interaction of a magnetic field with pexmment magnets, resulting in the con- struction of universal bi-filar variameters and magnetic balances. A fall mathematical treatment considers all the factors involved, including the optical systems and the correction of errors and irregularities. Of particuler Interest is a temperature-cowpensation technique for variometers using a new alloy, called ca-Ina3loy (or "kalzmlloyl% In wbIch a plate of M-Cu-Fs is superposed directly on the magnet system. The permeability of the calwalloy falls vith the rising temperature and the plate develops the coupegsator7 action of an armature vhIch, by closing the magnetic flux, decreases the magnetic moment of the system. The calmalloy Card 1/3 The Theory of Magnetic Variometers 37-12 -6/12 plate was first used by B. bL Yanovskly. Its main adwantage over other available systems is that it will compensate for changes in temperature under any condition vit&in the given temperature range. Furthermore, the calmalloy plate, being placed directly above the magnet systemhas a smaller thermal inertia than that of the system of suspended magnets. In the latter system the suspended magnets are kept at same d1stance from the magnet of the varlometer and thus differ from it in temperature. The disadvantage of the use of the ca3ma3loy plate as a compensating agent lies in the differences in the awposition of the a.Uoy, i.e. the different percentages of its three main ingredients (MI, Ca and Fe5- ConseTwatlx, the -In drawback In tba use of the instrume t equipped with a-calmalliV plate is the need to adjust the instrument in advance, if the ralma3loy'plate is-to respand accurftely t6 fluctuations in temperature. The adjustment is done with a view to the range of tempe-rature fluctuations ineach particular area where the varionoter will be used; without these preliminary adjust- ments the accuracy of the compensation would be distorted. After weighing the pros and cons of the use of a calmalloy plate for temperature compensa- tion.. the conclusion is drawn that compensation by calma3loy is simpler Card 2/3 The Theory of ragnetic Ypriameters 37 -12 '-6112 than compensation by suspended ma~pets. The sathor of the article sees no value in the use of permalloy _or perminvar fak isimilar purpooes. V. ff. Bobrov, a member of the staff of the Irkutsk magnetic observatory, is mentioned. The data were used which were obtained during the IPY and various years of the period ig4o-1958. The Fourier coefficients of the two first harmonies of 3 were computed. The problem of two components of Sa is considered: the term SIt( t connected wJth the non- coincidence of the magnetic and geographic axes of the Earth, and -che term 3 1 (t) , dependent on the local time. The di rect results are discussed and comparisons with the former results of other investiga- tors are made. A large amplitude of the long period variation of the H-comp'onent. su- perimposed upon general secular variations has been noted. A zhange of the sign of the Z-element secular variation at Mirny in 1958, and at Vostok in 1959 is also noted and discussed. Orig. art. has 1 figure and 5 tablps. It was found that cystamine, AET, cystaphos, and mexamine retard i:cvacuation of the bzriun-L sulfate mass from the stomach 4-8 times, 3-6 and- i i-2-3 time's (as c2rn i~Eed with the control), with mouth, intraperitoneal, and 1-Card 1/2_ ACC NR- AT6036596 rectal administ trations, respectively. Experimental results showed that i-.,,'.-.ese radioprotectors cause a prolonged spasm of the pyloric and prepyloric isruption of muscle -parts of t,.e stomach. In addition they cause phased d.L A. tone and of peristalsis; brief intensifica tion of peristaltic activity in the Z"Jirst ,,~,&ours after administration of the drugs, and then a long attenuation per-iod. It was concluded that these disruptions in motor function are probably re- 1-sponsible Afor the delay *.-, evacuation. Radio,,~rotectors also cause phase changes in the intestine: 1) spasm and I.Lnereased muscle tone in the loops of the small intestine in the early hours; and 2) dystoala of the entire intestine. in the later hours. However, these ,preparations do not affect the rate of movement of the barium sulfate mass i-through the intestine. It was suagested that' the decrease in rad-Loprotective t t3 I Z-1 'e"ect observed during per os administration of the drugs is connected with disr`Upt-iOn of their evacuation from the.s.tomach and consequently with re- Itardation of the-ir absorbability. a comparative study was conductdd d the effect of cysitarnine, S,, AET, ::cystaphos (monosodium salt of 0-aminoethylthiophosphoric acid), and mex- amine (5-methoxytryptamine) on gastrointestinal motor function in nonirradi- ated rats, Optimal p:Eqtective doses of these substances were given to A. According to the patient's chart, the disease began with the appearance of an itch- ing pustule on the cheek 3 days after a shave at the barbershop. At the time of his admission to the clinic, the patient was in an extremely serious condition. The clinical diagnosis was verified by the detection of anthrax bacilli in the contents of the pustule and in the patient's blood by direct microscopy and by the isolation of a culture of the path- ogen. Therapy with penicillin, specific antianthrax serum, and symptomatic agents was ineffectual; only the intravenous introduction of a 1% solution of sanazin in a dosage of 10 ml from the 6th to llth days in conjunction with -the above-mentioned therapeutic preparations produced a change in the course of infection. The patient was discharged in good condition one-math after his admission. The case described Indicates the posei- biliti of successful therapy of anthrax sepsis. Stars of the basic four-group program and the bright zenith star PDra are observed by means of a new 3TA -180 (ZTL-180) zenith telescope. Results of investigating the instrument and determination of its constants are presented. Normal points (in intervals of 0.03 - 0.12 year for the basic program and 0.04 - 0.10 year for 13 Dra) are tabulated and presented graphically. Since May 1909 (?) the Irkutsk Observatory joined the work of the Soviet Latitude Serv- ice; moreover,it communicates its results to the International Time Bureau (Paris) and Central Bureau of International'Latitude Service (Turin).
