(Engineers) 100-5-3/10 TITLE: Machine for manufacturing welded cylindrical vessels from thin steel plate. (Ustanovka dlya izgotovleniya tsilin- dricheskikh svarnykh kongtruktsiy iz tonkolistoToy stali). PEftIODI:AL: "Sekhanizatsiya Stroitell.stvao (Bechanisation of ConstruR on), .1957, Vol.14, blo.~, pp.9 - 12 (USSR). ,~[,STRACT: This machine manufactures cylindrical measuri% vessels of 2 - 5 m diameter and 2 - 4.5 m height, mainly for the requirements of the chemical Industry. The sheet is made of stainless steel, approx-3 mm thick. The machine is fully automatic. The authors of this article designed the machine and supervised the construction of the same which was carried out by the Planning and Constructional 366tion of the Souzprn-montazh (Proyektno-Konstruktorskoy Kontor Trest Soyuz rommontazh), authors, certiricate No.102747 dated 14th 9rch, 1956. The machine comprises a working platform, an auxiliary drum, a forming drum, a lifting tower and an electric telpher which is placed along the workirg platform and serves the whole length of the macLine. Some parts of the machine were designed in the Glavstallkork- struktsiya of the Kimetallurgkhimstroy. Characteristic Card 1/2 parts of the lower gallery are 1 fixed and 6 removable Machine for manufacturin welded cylindrical vessels from thin steel plate. (Cont.1 100-5-3/10 boards containing electromagnets which hold down the steel sheets during the welding. The stainless steel Is not attracted by the magnF-t and therefore a band of carbon steel is placed above the sheet to secure the sheet. An ancillary drum of 0.5 m diameter serves for the transportation from the top to the bottom level. The forming drum comprises 16 pairs of specia.1, rectifyin,~4 screws for the adjustment of the diameter of the formin6 drum. These screws xtre pro- vided with curved aLvIls wh_ich perform the bendin6. The steel sheet is delivered by the telpher to the top plat- form where the size aud ar-,61es are checked. A c1parance ,)f 0 - 3 mm is allowed in overlapping for tte purlose of vitomatic welding of a 3 - 4 mm thick sheet. On the lower Ilitform the wpldir47, :)f loikg1tudinal and trUnBverse JoiLJs ,-ekes pluce. After tir.o welding the sheet is traTL 91 cr-ted ,;r:ipr the formirjv drum. This machine c&n also be used f` -rdinary stei-I sh---,r,- ~ iq to 5 mm thickness. There ,:-e 3 figures. If the domain of the low-voltage arc-ov*r is bro-ight into a homogeneous longitudinal magnetic field with the field strength H, then the distribution of the electron concentration of the current on the wall and also the dimensions of the domain of the low-voltage arc-over vary in dependence upon the ratio D.,'D_ of the components parallel and vertical to the magnetic field. This makes it possible to determine the magnitude of this ratio at different values of K. The ion current on the wall in particular varies in a certain inter- val of the values z according to the law SOV/56 -,"4-~ -50 ~'61 On the Problem of the Ambipolar Diffusion in a Magnetic Field / 1z D- J" - c elp - - - where r denotes the radius of the r0 D., ) 0 tube, z - the coordinate on the axis of the tube, and 1 the eigenvalue of the boundary problem, which can be determined from the measurements in the case of H o 0. In collaboration with G. I. Pankows. the author determined the distributions of the ion current density on the wall in the domain of the low-voltage arc-over for different values of H. The method of measurement was analogous to the method d*scribed by the author in a previous paper (Ref 2). The general picture of this new distribution is illustrated in a diagram which in drawn for an argon pressure of 0,7 torr. The electrons proceed in diffusing along the Axis because the diffusion to the walls is decelerated in the magnetic field. On this occasion j increases in the magnetic field at a certain distance from the cathode. A second diagram illustrates the change of D,./D_ and this diagram perfectly agrees with the correspond- Card 2/5 ing classical formula. This method as compared to the methods SOV/56-34-5-50,41 On the Problem of the Ambipolar Diffusion in a Magnetic Field in publications has the advantage that the concentration of the electrons in the plasma need not be measured. Hence, the decrease of D is not accompanied by a just as great d*- crease of the diffusion current on the wall, when the longitudinal Inhomogeneity is disturbed. Above all, the authors studied the ignition processes under conditions similar to those with ignition of luminescence tubes, without a starter, and determined the dependence of the velocity of the ionization front on various conditions. At first, they describe the experimental arrangement (circuit diagram - Fig. 1), and discuss the method of measurement. The tubes had diameters of 15, 25, and 58 " , and lengths of 47, 88, and 120 as. respectively, and were filled with chemical- ly pure argon (0.5 - 10 as Hg). Three 12 mm long 0.3 mm .diameter molybdenum probes were mounted at different poiats on the axis of the dig- charge tube. and two similar probes were mounted at different distances from the axis opposite two of the axial probes. The spectra oi Lhe signals from the probes and the correlation functions of the signals from different pairs of probes were recorded. Twenty-six of the recorded spectra and correlation functions are presented graphically Card -1/2 ACC NRI AP6033409 and are discussed at some length. Three types of oscillations were distinguished: current-convective oscillationD with a discrete spectruz, which appeared as expected at the critical magnetic field strength and behaved in accordance with the theory; low frequency oscillations with frequencies of a few kilohertz associated with props- gation of waves from the axis to the wall of the discharge tube, the propagation volicity oeing 3 x 10 cm/sec at a magnetic field strength of 5.6 k(jo; and oscil- lations with frequencies of several tons of kilohertz, which first appeared when the magnetic field was slightly inclined to the axis of the discharge tube and was of such a strength that the Lon Larmor frequency was approximately equal to the Ion collision frequency. Possible causes of the different oscillations are discussed. Orig. art. has: 2 formulas and 12 figures. SUB CODE: 20 SUBM DATE: 17sep6b ORIG.
