ABSTRACT: An engineering formula for computing the temperature of contaCtB
switching heavy d-c. currents to developed; the -rate of current change ls'pxesurned to:~
be 0 -2) x 106 amp/sec. These assumptions are made* (1) Contact parts are 7M-ade
from the same material; (2) Actual contact occurs in one round area, and (3) No
thermoelectric effect is involved. The contact heating is due to the energy liberated
in the resistance of contact pa-rts and in the resistance of the contact volume where
the lines of current converge. The ellipsoid pattern of convergence is replaced
(after R. Holm) by a circular pattern; this approldmatlon simplifies the differential
equation of heat conductance whose solution yields the final formula for contact
temperature. Orig. art. has, 4 figuxes and 21 formulas.

TEXT: On the basis of a paper by A. L. Smith (see below) who studied
the luminescence of nonactivated MgO and ZnO mixtures, the authors
examined the system MgO - ZnO notivated Viith O.-Ij I/', of Cr (added [is
ammonium bichromate). The mineralizer added Ras 3 ~ LiCl. Samples were
produced at 1100 and 13000C. Powder patterns were taken by a YPC-50-'Vl V,
(URS-50-1) apparatus. Two limited solid solutions sere found: ZnO.160

volume of the solid solution Mg(zn)o increases continuously. The
incorporation of Mg ions into the hexagonal structure of ZnO causes a
slight increase of parameter a and a considerable decrease of parameter c;
thus, the unit cell volume is reduced, The upper limits of existence of'

ABSTRACT: The phase diagram of the Zr-ZrC system was drawn up on the basis of experi-
mentally determined melting points, x-ray, and microbardness data for samples contain-
ing 1.25-46.25 atm S C. The work was conducted in order to resolve a controversy in
the literature. The phase diagram was examined in the 6000-31000C range. The samples
were prepared by f-using zinc hydride with carbon in.variouB ratios and holding for 4
brs at 140DOC in argon atmosphere. The phase diagrrm of the Zr-ZrC system is shown in
figure 1. The eutectic temperature of the system is 18200C. The eutectic alloy con-
tains 3.0 atm I C. The changes of the ZrC-pbaas lattice parmsur as a function of

ABSTRACT: The phase equilibrium of tunpsten and niobium carbide, NbC0.98 (from 5 to 95
Wt % W), and NbC0.65 (from 5 to 50 wt % W), was examined by x-rays in the 20000-30000C
range. It was found that the system has true two-phase region (a+6-solid solution based+
on W and W2C, a+y-solid solution based on W and NbC, and y+O-solid solution based on
NbC and Hb2C) and also a region of a three-phase equilibrium, a+O+y. In the tertiary
W-Nb-C region the liquid phase occurs below 26000C. In the tertiary W-Nb-C region
binary eutectic a+$, a tertiary eutectic a+O+y, and a tertiary eutectic a+d+y were de-
tected. The hypothetic profile of the Nb-W-C system is shown in figure 1. The depen-

ABSTRACT: The author derives equations for the variation of the axial velocities and
temperature differentials along a free nonisothermal air jet of round cross section,
acted upon by thc inertial forces in the (nonvertical) direction of the jet flow and
gravitational forces in a perpendiculay direction. The Inomentum, is assumed to be con-
stant in the horizontal direction and equal to archimedean lifting force In the
vertical direction. 7be arebimtdean and gravitational forces are assumed cormencurate
Approximate solutions are obtained for the differential equations describing the jet

ABSTRACTi 7bo Toolnex to bO conaidered in the choice of initiAl elavAtionx And
aiming points used in laying direct artillery fire on moving targets such as tanks,
in order to achieve the greatest probability of a hit with the first round (i.e.,
sniper-type fire), are discussed. The problem of range (elevation) and direction
(azimuth) settings are treated individually. The effects of target speed, lag in
time of actual fire from time of target designation and transmission of the firing
order, time of flight of the projectile, and the ballistic trajectories of various
gun-projectile combinations on the choice of initial firing elevation, are noted.

A13STRACT: Last year, the All-Union Trust of Productive Enterprises of the
Labor Reserves Main Administration issued more than 70 differ-
ent types of training aids, costing 3.3 million rubles. They
pertained to metallurgy, heat engineering, metal cutting machine
tools, machine parts, agricultural machines etc. A new techno-
logical process for painting models was introduced; and a number
of Darts were made of plastic which reduced the cost by 20 %.

PERIODICAL: Professionallno-Tekhnicheskoye Obrazovaniye, 1958, # 4,

ABSTRACTj Much work has boon done lately on improvement of teaching
methods but there is still a great lack of training aide.
Though certain factories are working on them, and hope to
increase their production to 100 different types, there are
not enough, and the material made in the schools themselves
is hold up by departmentalism (it rarely leaves the school)
and many higher or intermediate schools get practically
nothing.
To improve this state, an All-Union competition has been
arranged, to end on 1 January 1959. The Pavlavo-Posadskiy
factory will mass produce the prize winning items.
