ADSTA'LACT: Plasma stability and diffusion wore Investigated In a coldecathode re-
flex discharge in a longitudinal magnetic fiold (PIG Reflex). The diachmrge took
place in a glass tube 5 cm In di3meter contalftinj; helium at prossures fron 5 x 10-4

fron thnir rospectIve cathodes, Potontials up to 2 IN wara applied, and'currento
from 50 to 300 A% wore obrtalned. The longitudinal magnatid field was uniform within
0.5%. arA could be varied up to 3400 0e. The follawin& diagnastia Lnetr=sats or pro-

measurements. Zloctrom densities and to*peratures of the order of 5 x 1011 cc~-3 and
20 OV, respectively, were observed. It was found, In agreement with the observa~
tions of J.P.3onnal, G.r1riffod and C.Xanus (Phys.Rav.Lot.G,GG5,l9Gl) Utat the ion
current to the wall of the tube reached a minimum at a certain critical value of
the magnatic Rold and Increased Iii stronCer fields. Me value ot the critical mag-.
notic field increased with helium pressure from about 500 09 at 10-3 ma Hg to 1200
00 at S x 10-3 ma Hg. The electron temperature and density an the axis reached max-;
ima at the critical wgnotIc field. A radial electric field developed In the plasma,.
:at the critical magnetic field aml increased with further increase of the magnetic
.field. Values over 60 W/c= were observed. UacroscopLe notion of the plasma column
was observed by rotating mirror tine-resolution photography. The column developed
helical structure at magnotIc fields above th4a critical, and pulzated at frequenclim
from 200 to 800 cycles/aeo. Density oscillations at frequencies from 20 to 50 kilo-
cycles/soo were observed by nicroreave and probe measurements. The electron tempers-

from the axis, and tbA electron teriperature had two maxima, on* an the axis and one

,tho critical field is ascribed to tho macroscopic notion of the Column- It If sug-
Cestcd that those oscillations Vert not obsorved by Ronnal, Oriffad and Kanus (loco'
cit.) because of their very low frequeacy. The rotation of the column is ascribed
to azinuthal drift In the crossed radial electric arA longitudinal naGnetic fields.
Tho orlain of the radial *1s4trI4 field to not understood; several poesibilitlas
nro briefly discussed# The failure of F.Chon and A.Cooper (Phys.Rov.Le 't.9,333,1962)
to observe the Increased diffusion is ascribed to the stabilizing influence of the
motal walls of their discharge chamber with respect to the davelopmext of large am-
