carried out a preliminary investigation of N204, which decomposes irreversibly under
7-n irradiation. The radiative decomposition of the nitrogen oxides was investigated
for different types of radiation by various investigators. Since N20,, turns at high
temperatures and pressul-es above 1 atm, Into a mixture Of N02, NO, and 02, the authors
calculated the total energy yield of the decomposition of the N204 under the assump-
tion that each component decomposes under the influence of the radiation independently,:
of the other. It was further assumed that the 7-quantum absorption curve coincides
with the curve describir43 the distribution of the 7-quantwn sources. A formula for
i the total yield is presented in terms of' the published yields of the individual com-
ponents. The accuracy of the results will be estimated after the experiment is per-

Abstract: It was found that inadequate reproducibility of results obtained
on determination of migrator7 PLO -in carbonate soils is due to
variable chemical composition of the (NHq).XO,3 reagent and te=-e-
rature variations during the treatment of the soil. It is recom-
mended to check the concentration of the approximately 1% solu-
tion of (NH*)A C03 by titration with 0.1 N EUSOvcto methyl orange,
and to adjust the conceatretion by dilution with water or addition
of 10% solution of (NHY).aCC'3- Concentration of the (NE~,),CO-,

ABST RAC T A des( ription is presented of iron-and-v
graphite cermet con-
tact inserts ~1 -1) for trolleybutes. The ICI are made frorn a
mixture of Fe and graphite (G) powders compa(ted ( old and
then sintered in a shielding or iriert atmosphere. The G acts
as lubricant between the rubbing surfaces of the ICI and the
( ontac t wire. The ICI operate ;,s!t current densities of up to
60 amps /( rri~, 501) v potential, and a pressure of 2- 3 kg/crn~.
It is pointed out that ICI undergoes less wear than does a cop-
per-and-graphite substance, but that the trolley contact wires
are exposed to greater wear. It is found that the G content has
Card 1/2 a pronounced eff2(t on the wear resis-an(e of the ICI.
SOV/ 137 - 57 - 10 - 1900t)
Wear - res)stant Iron Powder Gontar t Inserts for Trolleybuses
Minimum wear is shown by ICI when the ( ermet containt, 8% G. There is a
sharp drop in ultimate strength (by more than half) as G ( ontent rises from
Z to 8%. After sintering at 870'C the structure ot tile material consists of
ferrite and G. Siritering at ()500 causes a harder pearlite to form. As a
result of the investigation a material ~vas adopted (.onsisting of Fe powder
derived from redu( tion of scale as a base, with the addition of 5,6 and 8% G.
2"lo Cu is added to some cornpo~,itions. Sinteri.-ig is run for 4 hours at 920
and 9500, The porosity of the ICI is 9- 15GIo. The work of the Kivev trolley-
bus system showed the use of ICI to be entirel, satisfactory. The lLfe of ICI
is 2. 36 times as great as that of ( opper -and- graphite inserts. and its cost
is 63 percent lower. The Kiyev Street Railway Plant irn. F. E. Dzerzhinskly
has developed the proc ess of manufa( turing ICI with sintering in boxes.

grees of destruction of the structure. This range comrrises tile
stresses ohich qre producod in ceramic materials in the

the determination (for the range P - 3.lo4 - 2,1.105 d,in/cm")

4,6.104 dyn/cm2 (Tolstoy apparatus) a maximum viscosity (of

the value 11P" leads to an inoreasing destruction of t).e struc-
ture and to the reduction of '~Ie order of magnitude cf the
effective visconity of from 109 up to 104 poise. P - 1,6.106

stant and corresponds ~o the minimum plastic (of Bir,Far,-i =

The rheolog s: viscosity - shear-stress 7 (P; 11ave
great practical importance. They determine the basic prin-
ciples of the tEchnological processes: of the wor.~in~- and de-
formation of 3eramic materials, as well as of' the con5truction
of machines. Thel(p) curves are especially importan'. for t-.e
study of the ieformation processes. Waviness - one of t!Fe

physical reason In the resistance which is offered by the

such an extent thatabrmth is c=s4d# , and individual layers
of the mater:.al glide along concentric surfaces (references

of the values which furnish the main data for the tec'~.nolo,~ical

Basic Problems of the Theory (cont.) SOIT/5237
1959 are presented. Phys'-cochemical meahanics Is a new
field of science dealing with the development of scientific bases
for the manufacture of engineering materials with specified
mechanical properties ane, structure by taking physicochemical
factors into account. This science originated after World War IT
as a result of the work of Academician P. A. Rebinder and his
followers. Attention is given to the following: the selection of
processing equipment, qLality appraisal of processed ceramic mat-
erials, criteria for appraising the molding properties of cePam-
ic materials, principles for the design and selection of pug
mills, and rheological curves of ceramic materials and their
significance for the processing of ceramics. Schematics for
scheduling or setting up the process for working and molding
ceramic materials are Included. The author thanks Academician
