TITLE: Introduction Into Magnetohydrodynamics

TEXTs The present paper which is intended for persons with secondary-
school training describes the principles of magnetohydrodynamic action.
The interaction between the motion of a conductive liquid or of a gas
and a magnetic field is discussed. This interaction can be theoretically
described on the basis of Maxwell or Navier-Stokes-equations as well as
by the.continuity equation. The dependence of magnetohydrodynamic inter-
action on the liquid.~arameters (electrical conductivity, viscosity,
magnetic permeability , the potential of the magnetic field, and the
velocity field ie discussed and the application of hydrodynamic concepts

ABSTRACT: The stabilising influence of 4 magnetic field on
the formation of the spiral arms of the%alaxy was considered
by the present author and J.S. StodbikiewTe-YTR-efs. 2. 3)~
In these papers a study was made of the gravitational
instability of a uniform, axially symmetric core subject to
differential rotation and having a transverse magnetic field,
An instability condition was obtained subject to the local
approximation. When this condition is applied to a uniform
protogalaxy an estimate can be obtained for the upper
limit of the magnetic field of the protogalaxy~ If the
magnetic field is largor than the critical value determined
by the instability condition then the spiral arms of the
Galaxy cannot be formed because of gravitational instabilityt

Using the observed dimensions of the spiral arms (I kpO and
the density of the protogalaxy in the neighbourhood of the Sun
(4.2 x 10- 24 g/cm3), it was shown that the upper limit of the
magnetic field is 10- 5 Oe. The present paper is concerned with
the generalisation of the above problem to the case of a non-
uniform model. of a protogalaxy, taking part in differential
rotation. The core is assumed to be isothermal. and having an
axial symmetry. The following equations form the starting

TEXTz The author briefly outlines basic problems of cosmology and pre-
sents a popular survey of cosmological models. He discusses the magnitude-red
shift diagram and expresses the opinion that it indicates the closedness of the
Metagalaxy. Photometric, bolometric and evolutionary effects are mentioned
which perplex the interpretation of observational optical data. The distribu-
tion of galaxies over distances and stellar magnitudes is considered. The age
scale of various cosmological models (- 1010 years) and of oldest stars (- 2 x
x 1010 years from Hoyle's data) is discussed. It is pointed out that the.,models
of steady-state and Lemaitre-Eddington do not contain discrepancies between
these ages. The author reports in a popular form on radioastronomical methods
