TITLE: Investigation of the intensity of the SP transformed wave associated with deep Afghan
earthquakes

ABSTRACT: Transformed waves associated with deep Afghan earthquakes already have been x
studied by the author (Tr. In-ta seyem. strLva i seysmologil AN, TadzhSSR, X, Dushanbe,
1962). In that study the author used kinematic and dynamic criteria for determining the whys_
ical nature of the SP transformed wave and established that it Is a longitudinal wave &oduced
by a transverse wave at the discontinuity between a sedimentary stratum and granite. In order
to interpret these Y. aves more reliably and study the velocity jump at the transformation dis-
continuity the author now has compared the expprimental ratios of the amplitudes of trans-
formed and transverse waves for different angles of emergence with theoretical computations.
Although a number of authors have studied SP waves, no one has made comparidons of the type

described in this article. The theoretical and experimental curves of intensity were deter-
mined as the ratio of displacements in the transformed and trans~,erse waves to the vertical
component. Intonsities of transformed waves wero computed from tables and on the follo%y-
ing assumptions: the mediunlKs 2-layer (sedimentaries and granites); the discontinuities are
plane-parallel; and the lengths of the S and SP waves are shorter than the thicknesses of these
layers. It was found that the intensity of the SP wave is very sensitive to velocity ju~)ps at
the transformation boundary; the greater the velocity. jump, the intenser is the SP wave.
Comparison of the experimental curve of intensity with- the theoretical curve makes it possible
to use the SP wave very reliably for determination of the relief of certain boundaries in the
earth's crust. In addition, it makes it possible to obtain. additional data on determination of
the velocity ratios in layers and the velodity jump at a discontinuity, thereby making it pos-
sible to more reliably interpret the observed boundary. When SP waves are used the most
complex problem is determining the angles of emergence. The author increased accuracy of
determination of angles of emergence by constructing a curve of the dependence of angle of
emergence of the transformed wave on focal depth, using the clearest arrivals.. Accuracy

for the ultra;sonic treatment of NIKFI-R 400-micron nuclear emulsion were found.
Barium tit tanate was used as an ultrasonic radiator at 1, 100 kc, 1. 25 W/cm
Developer used: amidol, 3 g; sulfite, L-2 g; citric acid, 1 g; water, I liter;
diluted by I:Z for pH = 6.4. The time of the ultrasonic treatment proved to be
o.nly pne -fifth that for, the conventional photographic treatment which is explained
by accelerated diffusion phenomena. The emulsion sensitivity was found to be

ABSTRACT: This information was reported on 16 Nov 1962. In-1960 a group of
scientists of the Academy of Sciencesy Armenian SSR started a study of the piezo-
electrical properties in polymer electrets with a dipole"moment. It was establisyed
that polymethylmethaerylate (PMA) and ebonite had the most stable piezoelectrical
properties and a high piezomodulus. The term "piezoelectret polymer" was given to
the polymers exhibiting piezoelectrical properties in the electret state. It was
assumed that the polymer molecule!orientation (which resulted in anisotropy in a
polarized PMMA) might create an asymmetry sufficient to produce a piezoeffect. The
possibility of increasing the piezomodulus in piezoelectrical polymers by the

orientation of a solidified solution in an electrical field was diacuBsed in an
earlier work. Polarization was achieved by a 6-hour heating at 154C in direct
electrical field with the intensity of about 70 kv/cm. The piezomodulus was
m.easured parallel to the polarization direction (no piezoeffect was observed in the
perpendicular direction nor in the nonpolarized samples). The quality of the elec-
trots obtained was.improved gradually by correcting the procedure for their prep-
aration. The electret samples produced in 1962 preserved their piezoelectrical
properties for a substantially longer time than the earlier samples. Piezomodulus
of the new samples decreased 4-fold during 6 months. "The authors express their

ABSTRACT: The "K-140" welding head, developed at the Electric Welding
Institute, AS UkrSSR, is designed for spot welding of steel
and titanium alloys with a total thickness of up to 2.0 +
2.0 mm. The parts of the head consisting of the tranc-for-
mer, the pneumatic cylinder and the balancing mecl)anism are
described in detail. The welding head has a special mecha-
nism restricting the working stroke (Figure 3). The balan-
ce device makes it possible to join parts of the outer sur-
faces, which are on different levels (up to 2-3 mm);springs
on the upper ends of the electrodes cushion the blows and

ABSTRACT: The described two-electrode welding head "K-13211, developed
at the Electric Welaing Institute imeni Paton, is designed
for spot welding of steel and titanium alloy parts of joint
thickness up to 4 mm. Its small size makes it particularly
handy for joining casing sheets to frames of large struc-
tures, joining sheets of large size, connecting various
parts to the walls of thin-wall pipes. It can also be used
as an independent work element in multi-electrode welding
machines., The power of -the head "K-13211 is increased and
its dimensions are at the same time reduced (compared with
the other 2-spot welding heads described previously ~-Ref.l__7)
by increassd frequency of the power supply source. It con-
sists of a welding transformer; a balancing mechanism,
and a pneumatic cylinder sliawn in drawing (Figure 2). The

ABSTRACT: Some problems of designing small commercial frequency welding
transformers are treated. It is shown that the weight of such
transformers can be reduced by decreasing their efficiency,
choosing a suitable core design, intensifying the cooling of
the windings, and using insulation with higher heat and humidi-
ty resistance. The article contains a brief description of a
small, 7.5 kg, 25 kva step-down (220/25 V) transformer devel-
oped by the authors on the basis of the expounded theory. There
are 3 figures and 1 graph.

TEXT: Three new types of amall-size welding "tongs" are described -
"K-16511, IIK-18011, and "K-171", of about 20 kg weight,.designed for spot
welding of steel parts with total thickness of up to 4-5 mm. The "K-165",
and "K-18011 Figures I and 2 weld 120-140 spots per minute, have a pneumat-
ic drive and are meant for large assembly shops with conveyer lines. The
"K-171" (Fig- 3) with manual drive is for shops having no compressors.
The "K-16511 has a built-in transformer (Fig.-A). The electrodes of all
three types are water cooled. A special flexible cable, 11KGPE" of
"Ukrkabell" works is used for the feed of electric current, 2ompressed
air and water. It comprises three electric cores with 10 mm cross
section a2d one 2.5 mm core, and three duets for water and air; one of
the 10 mm cores is connected to the housing for grounding. The enti,.-4~
welding unit with "tongs" suspended on a spring balancer is shown in
Figure 6. Welding is possible in any position. The article includes
