TEXT:,' The article describes briefly the methods of uranium
dioxide production and the advantages of uranium dioxide as a reac-
tor fuel. The properties of uranium dioxide aB,a reactor fuel are '
in some ways, superior to those of metallic uranium since at highEr
temperatures, imperative for the increase in reactor efficiency,
metallic uranium accumulates fission gases and expands in volume.
Uranium dioxide (U02.000) has a high melting point of about 2.8000C
chemical stability in an inert and reductive gaseous atmosphere up
to the melting point, is stable to the bombardment of neutrons at
high temperatures, and does not change its crystal strdeture under
the influence of fission products. Its negative properties, i.e.

low thermal conductivity, especially above 1.5000C, and a low ura-
nium content of 9.66 gr/cu. cm, are offset by the increase in re-
actor efficiency. To make uranium dioxide suitable reactor fuel,
its density must be at least 10.95 gr/cu. cm. This is achieved by
pressing the powder into desired shapes and sintering them in vari-
ous gaseous atmospheres. Research on the factors improving the suit-
ability of uranium dioxide embraces (1) finding suitable basic
material;(2) reducing UO3 to U02 in powder form; (3) production of
powder particles of determined size and (4) establishing the sinte-
ring conditions of shaped pieces. Ammonium duiranate pro~_ved the
most suitable basic material. Uranium dioxide obtained varies in
quality, according to the method of its production from ammonium
duiranate. The best results were obtained by precipitating ammozlium
diuranate with 2.6 N NH OH from dilute uranyl nitrate solutions.
Uranium dioxide is obtained by reduction with hydrogen of ammonium

the effects of sintering conditions on the density of uranium di-
oxide showed that the increase in powder surface above 2 sq m/gr
and the sintering of powder with an initial 0 : U ratio of 2.08
results in good sintering in an inert atmosphere at temperatures of
1.40000 for 2 hours. The oxygen-uranium ratio is most suitably
determined by the oxidation and reduction methods. There is 1 non-

Abstract [Author's D2glish summary]: A monkey kidney cell line (101C ) car
rying the ISe 2ab attenuated strain of poliovirus Type I was estabiished.
Three and six months later the virus was recovered and several charac-
teristics of the re-isolated strains were deteremined. The rat/40 and d
markers did not change. but in the virus-free line of the ~a cells ard
in HaLa call cultures the re-isolated virus reached higher titres than'

type =oral polio mid smallpox simultaneously. 'she RAG antibody titer
of the serum of 17 infants and the type 1 polio antibody titer of the

They were unable to determine whether the type 1 polio virus antibody
production was disadvantageously affected by the smallpox vaccination

The plaque formation by the RNA viruses poliovirus I.9c 2ab, Coxsackie virus B-3
(prototype strain) and the DNA virus Herpes virus hominis was inhibited moderately
by the eugenol derivative and pronouncedly by the guanidine derivatives (Quanethidin,
PYG). The effect of PYG was particularly noteworthy; plaque formation by any of the
above viruses was inhibited by this compound at a concentration of 10 pdmi. The
effect of PYG and Quanethidine can not be attribu'ued exclusively to their guanidine

A report on the degree of air pollution by these substances in 8 industrial establish-
ments (1176 samples ot air) and the results of medical examination of 170 workers
are presented. The correlations between the 2 series of examinations are set (orth
in detail, showing a pronounced parallelism which facilitates the assessment of
hazards of subtoxic and toxic concentrations of acetanilide. ethylaniline, nitro-
anisol, anisidine, nitrophenelol and aromatic nitro-compounds in the air.
