ABSTRACT: The.degree of radiation protection offered by mexamine (5-mothoxytryptamine
HCl) was studied in white mi.ce in respect to suz-vival and average life extension 30
days after irradiation with doses of 300-1600 r (scale of 100)e Of the 40 mice in
each group) 20 received a 75 mg/kS dose of mexamine intraperitoneally 15 minutes prior
to irradiation. For X-rays the protective--_ effect started at doses of about 800 r. It
decreased deaths due to bone-mbrain injury by 1,4 - 1.3, The factor of decreased
radiation dose (FDRD) was 1912 at BOO r where 55% of the deaths were due to brain-bone
and 45% to gastrointestinal'injury~ Upon irradiation by-the linear accelerator at.

TITLE: Physicochemical study of phase transformations in Go-Mn alloys
PERIODICAL: Zhurnal neorganicheskoy khimii, v. 7, no. 2, 1962, 441-444
TEXT: Transformations of Co - Mn alloys in solid state were studied by
the thermal differential analysis of hardness (nk-52 (PK-52) pyrometer),
measurement of the electrical resistance and its temperature coefficient,
tests of microstructure and microhardness. At 30 atoms Mn, a trans-
formation in the melt caused by a g-a-transition of Co, was observed, with
Mn lowering the temperature of transformation. A two-phase region, a+P,
P+y due to Mn polymorphy, was found in the part rich in Mn. Another
transformation was found in the center part of the diagram caused by
formation of CoMn occurring in two polymorph-ous modifications: 11 at low
temperatures ap to 515 0C and y at high temperatures up to 805 0C. Hardness

tests showed a minimum at 50 atoea which corresponds to Colin. Minima
occurring at 25 and 75 atom% Mn indicate the possibility of Co 311n and

XBSTRACT: The present paper assoribes a method of examining the wear of a
hinge-like constructions for which purpose a special machine Is used
the oonstruotional scheme of which is daeoribea in the paper. The me-

dple of the machine consists in the fact that 2 pairv of the parts of

of 2 systm which are -fmmeoted with each other; one of them in in a

bolt fram the outside. The second part of the samples is clamped fast
in the same manner in the sooond systems with the only difference that
the bolt In not in direct connection with the base plate but by means of
a transmission, so that it is subjected to the pressure of the lever
together with the (movable) system. In this way the samples were moved
backwards and forwards 12.000 times, while, as alreadLy mentioned, sand
was fed into the space between the bolt and the interior of the sleeve.
After having been moved forwards and ba6cwards 40.000 times the samples
were taken out and weighed. By means of the diagrams it found that
if the metal hardness of the pairs (sleeves, bolt) remained the same,
wear was proportional to the number of motions and to the hardness of
the material of the samples. If degrees of hardness were differents both
oomponents of wear had to be taken into acoount. The experiment may also
be carried out without sand with oil lubrication, but In that case it

was found that D20 concentrated in the outer layer of the hydrate shell
of active groups..On the basis of this difference in D20 concentration in
free water and cationite-baund water, the cationite is recommended for
enriching deuterium oxide. L. S. Pyaterikova and I. T. Koohkina assisted

ABSTRACT: The authars report on the application of furacillin
in surgical treatment.. According to S.P. Zayeva's
data, furacillin is-highly effective against anaero-
bian infections. She has proved that vitamin C in-
creases the effect of furacillin, and furacillin on
its part reduces the content of vitamin B and PP in
the organism. S.G. Mogillnitskiy, N.I. Migalif,
P.I. Stradyn', and M.M. Ferber indicate that a
furacillin solution locally applied does not stimul-

epithelization and, consequently, the healing of the
wound. Furacillin also spares the mucous membrane
much more than penicillin. T.I. Ishumina has proved
that in parental furacillin injections, the phagocy-
tic reaction increases. Based on case histories,
their own tests, and those of the above mentioned
scientists, the authors concluded that furacillin
is an effective chemico-therapeutic remedy in the
prophylaxis of purulent infections in surgery and
in healing various purulent processes. Furacillin
is a full substitute for antibiotics. Concerning
its antibacterial features and its resistibility
to changes of the environment (temperatures, etc.),
furnacillin is especially useful in polyclinics.
