Abstract : The author derives the conditions (inequalities) governing the applica-
bility of approximations that were earlier employed by the author (ibid..,
27 (1954), 39-0 and 411), in which he considered the nucleon localized at
a discrete level in a self-consistent meson-field potential well and mov-
ing in a translatory and rotary manner with the well. He considers some
quantities which were not taken into account in the previous works men-
tioned as small perturbations.

tained by them is in error; evidently they.had employed the author's
formula in his semiclassical theory of polarons (S. 1. Pekar, Zhur.
eksp. I teor. fiz., 16, 335, 341, 1946). The author shows the Inap-
plicability of the direct variational method, particularly the method
of Lee et alii, for calculating the effective mass of the polaron M;
