As the poliomyelitis and hog encephalomyelitis (Teschen disease) viruses have
many common properties. It is suggested that they should be grouped together as
'poliomyelitis -like' viruses. They are similar in respect of size and resistance to
ethpr, antiseptics. enzymes and temperature. lyophilize poorly. lack haemagglut-
inating ability and have one principal natural host. Both are viscero- and neuro-
tropic, infect homologous tissue cultures readily and in the formolinized state pro-
