TITLE-, Cylindrical electromagnetic oscillations in the gap
between coil and charge of induction furnaces

TEXT-. The field between a cylindrical coil and the charge
is investigated and a new interpretation of the mutual effects of
coil and charge is presented. The author states that literature
has so far provided expressions for electromagnetic waves in the
cylindrical coil and in the charge but none for the space between
them, and proceeds to assume a cylindrical coil of infinite
length, uniform current density, the coil being made of flat
windings with no gap between them but perfectly insulated from
each other: he derives the average intensity of the electric
fields and of the magnetic fields by using Poynting's radiation
vec~tor and obtaining Bessel and Neumann functions. These
expressions were simplified for small arguments, in the order of
1o-5, concordant with normal industrial practice. There is a

homogeneous magnetic field and though the numerical values of
the effects in the coil and in the charge are the same as before,
the findings allow an interpretation which is different from the
usual picture. The usual interpretation postulates: If a
current I flows through the coil, a magnetic flux will be
generated in the hollow coil, in phase with I; the flux will
induce in the coil an e.m.f. lagging by 'r/2. The new
interpretation postulatesi If a current I flows through the
coil, the coil will radiate into its hollow a radiation vector
which has a magnetic component (which creates magnetic flux) and
an electric component lagging by Z/2 behind the former, of a
magnitude identical with the e.m.f. as before. Continuing the
considerations the author derives formulae for the electrical and
magnetic components of waves when the argument is large, and
arrives at the same value for standing waves between walls as in
previous literature. There are 5 figures.
