This reference aid is a complete translation of YIJIUBAYI-NIAN BAOKAN MULU
[1981 LIST OF NEWSPAPERS AND MAGAZINES], compiled by, and offered for sub-
scription through, the Bei~ing Post Affice as of Januarv 1981. The list is
presented in order of domestic-subscription index number, as in the original;
a list of 25 titles appended to the original as a s~pp].ement has been
integrated with the main list in this translation and identified by asterisks
following the index numbers. The prefix of an index number indicatea the
province of publication (see appendix), identified bv standard abbreviations
in this list. As in the original, odd prefixes, denoting newspapers, are
gathered together at the beginning of the compilation. This section is
followed by the magazine titles, denoted by even prefixes, which make up the
bulk of the list. This year, there are more than 1100 titles in a11, an
increase of about 40 gercent.

This glossary supersedes REFERENCE AID: GLOSSARY OF NORTH KOREAN TERMS, JPRS,
May 1973. It provides standardized English translations of terms used in
North Korea, drawn primarily from the North Korean p ress, and will aid in
achieving consistency in the translation of ke.y North Korean terms and con-
cepts. Many of the terms in th;Le glossary represent syntheaized expressions
of several related strains of thought, aome of which appear in slogans and
are, for the most part, "live" political concepts, rich in application and
full of underlying implications. A full explanation of all terms, however,
is beyond the scope of *_his glossary. Ttao complementary approaches were
used in the compilation of thia glossary. First, defini::ions were compiled

from Knrean dictionaries published in Pyongyang. Second, systematic com~ari-
sons were made. between the original texts of official pronouncements appear-
ing in the North Korean press and Englieh-language printed texts emanating
concurrently from Pyongyang. The basic Korean alphabetization system was
applied throughout this glossary. As an added note, North Korea has for
many years been engaged in an extensive language reform movement. In
- accordance with government policy, a concerted effort is being made to purge
the language of foreign words and to replace Sino-Korean compounds by coining
new words of "purely Korean" origins. This movement is especially evident in
descriptions pertaining to industrial processes and products. This glossary
reflects this emphasis.

REFERENCE AID DATA ON SERIAL PUBLICATIONS OF VIETNAM
The following is an alphabetical listing of periodicals published in the ~
Socialist Republic of Vietnam [SRV] along with available data on alternate
titles, sponso�rship, officers and contents for each publication. The index
number assigned to a~ublication is a control number used to faciiitate
ordering and distribution. Approximately 311 newspapers, magazines, journals,
bulletins and newsletters are published in the SRV including 225 national
level publications (10 in foreign languages) and 86 local level publications
(3 in foreign languages). Included at the national level are publications
published by or intended for the Vietnam Communist Party and other political
parties; mass organizations; economic, cultural, and science and technology
sectors; military branches of service and religious groups. The 35 provinces
and three separate municipalities each have their own newspaper. In addi-
tion, at least 16 of these administrative divisions publish one or more
journals concerned with culture, education or science and technology. Local
publications focus almost exclusively on 1oca1 events and issues and supple-
ment rather than replace their national level counterparts. In this listing,
the title appearing on the front cover of a publication is used as the main
entry. Any variations of the title as it appears on the title page or in
citations elsewhere are entered as alternate titles. This report replaces a
report with the same t3tle published as JPRS 71592 dated 1 August 1978 and
Addendum of the same date.
