SIGNIFICANCE: THIS BRIEFING BOARD DEPICTS THE RECONSTRUCTION OF A RAIL FERRY CROSSING AT THE SITE OF THE DESTROYED THANH HOA RAILROAD FERRY AND TERMINAL FACILITIES HAM RONG 2. LOCATION: THE FERRY SLIPS ARE LOCATED ON THE NORTHEAST BANK OF THE SONG MA (RIVER) JUST SOUTHEAST OF THE THANH HOA RAILROAD AND HIGHWAY BRIDGE OVER THE SONG MA 3. REMARKS: THE THANH HOA AREA OF NORTH VIETNAM, AND PARTICULARLY THE AREA OF THE RAILROAD AND HIGHWAY BRIDGE, HAS BEEN THE OBJECT OF REPEATED U.S. AIR STRIKES, RESULTING IN THE DESTRUCTION OF BOTH THE BRIDGE AND THE FERRY FACILITIES. THE RAILROAD AND HIGHWAY BRIDGE HAS SINCE BEEN REPAIRED AND IS SERVICEABLE; AND WITH THE RECONSTRUCTION OF THE FERRY FACILITIES AN ALTERNATE RAIL CROSSING WILL AGAIN BE AVAILABLE OVER THE SONG MA. 4, MISSION READOUT: I VEALS TWO RAIL FERRY SLIPS LOCATED ON These notes have been prepared for briefing purposes only and should not be used for detailed analytical work. APPROXIMATELY 445 FEET OF TRACK EXTENDS FROM THE SLIP TOWARD A THREE-TRACK RAIL YARD LEADING FROM THE MAIN LINE OF THE HA NOI/THANH HOA RAIL LINE AT UTM WG842938 SOUTH-SOUTHWEST TO AN AREA OF OPEN STORAGE AT UTM WG840932. THE OPEN STORAGE AREA CONTAINS RAILS, TIES, AND MISCELLANEOUS MATERIAL. A SECOND RAIL FERRY SLIP, AT UTM WG838930, IS IN AN EARLY STAGE OF CONSTRUCTION. APPROXIMATELY 185 FEET OF TIES WITHOUT RAIL HAVE BEEN LAID FROM THE FERRY SLIP TOWARD THE RAIL YARD. TWO PILE DRIVERS ARE LOCATED AT THE SLIP SITE AND SEVERAL PILES HAVE BEEN EMPLACED. AT LEAST SIXTY PIECES OF ROLLING STOCK AND ONE STEAM LOCOMOTIVE ARE NOTED IN THE RAIL YARD. NOT SHOWN ON GRAPHIC: TWO RAIL FERRY SLIPS ARE LOCATED ON THE SOUTHWEST BANK OF THE SONG MA. ONE SLIP, AT UTM WG836927, IS PROBABLY COMPLETE. THE SECOND FERRY SLIP, AT UTM WG835929, IS IN AN EARLY STAGE OF CONSTRUCTION. SOME PILINGS AND ONE PILE DRIVER ARE NOTED IN THE RIVER AT THE SLIP SITE.
